Cellebrite Announces Next Generation Automated Phone Buyback Solution
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, Spain, February 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
New "Device Wipe" Capability Ensures Removal of Personal Data from Traded
Android, iOS and BlackBerry(R) Devices
Cellebrite, the world's leading provider of mobile data transfer solutions, today
announced the latest version of its automated phone buyback solution with new "device
wipe" functionality designed to delete sensitive customer data from leading iOS, Android,
and BlackBerry(R) devices in store, as the last step in the phone buyback process. This
new functionality will allow wireless retailers to increase the take rates of high margin
phone trade in transactions by providing customers with the added confidence that their
personal information will be "wiped" from the device while it is still in their custody.
With this critical enhancement, Cellebrite becomes the only vendor to fully automate the
in-store phone buyback process.
"As a leader in phone trade-in and buyback solutions, we've seen the value of
integrating our trade-in capabilities with the Cellebrite Touch to further assist in
accurately identifying the make and model of the used device and its associated discounts,
while simplifying retail operations," said Bob Sullivan, Executive Vice President, Clover
Wireless in the US. "While phone buyback has enjoyed tremendous growth in conjunction with
global smartphone adoption, one area of consumer resistance has been related to security
of personal data. With the addition of the device wipe, Cellebrite has helped remove this
final barrier to phone trade in adoption, paving the way for retailers to increase phone
trade-in transaction volume."
Phone buyback programs offer wireless retailers important new revenue streams and
increased profit margins by driving traffic to the store, and providing immediate credits
that can be used to offset the purchase of a new phone or high margin accessories. The
retailer is then reimbursed the value of the phone when it is sent to be recycled. With
customer spend in the store likely to be much more than 100 percent of the value received
for the traded-in device, and at no cost to the retailer, phone buyback take-up rates are
key to increasing wireless retail sales and profitability.
Once an in-store agent confirms the phone buyback transaction with the customer, the
wipe can be performed on a supported device. The device wipe can be offered free to
customers as an incentive to trade their phones for in-store credit, and typically takes
less than five minutes to perform. The wipe capability is available as part of the
automated phone buyback solution that runs on the Cellebrite Touch Platform. The
Cellebrite Touch phone buyback solution automatically detects phones and generates an
accurate price for the phone to eliminate loss from inaccurate or incorrectly applied
discounts, creates a coupon for the phone value to be used in the store, and facilitates
the removal of customer data from the device. The device wipe capability for Android and
Blackberry is available immediately, with iOS support available in 45 days.
"Given the competitiveness of the global wireless retail landscape and the need to add
new high margin revenue streams, we see growing demand for phone buyback programs among
carriers and large retailers," said Alon Klomek, VP Sales at Cellebrite Headquarters. "We
believe that the device wipe is critical to helping our wireless retail customers
successfully monetize phone buyback."

The Aptilo-Stoke Solution
Mobile operators seeking to offer Wi-Fi options to their subscribers need to ensure
that their customers' mobile experience is as effortless as possible, while opening the
service to the broadest range of devices and offering many different ways to access the
Wi-Fi network. Issues of user identification and authorization and the myriad access
mechanisms in Wi-Fi need to be implemented with the minimum of complexity in the operator
core, and offer a uniform user experience regardless of device type or access method.
- The Aptilo Service Management Platform (SMP), through Web portal or
automatic SIM- based authentication, can identify a subscriber and assign traffic
policies according to highly specific customer or network attributes. The Aptilo SMP
can also mediate charging functions for these subscribers so that the user experience
and billing are similar to that of the cellular network.
- The Stoke Wi-Fi eXchange can link tens of thousands of Wi-Fi access points
from different manufacturers to the operator core network, and can identify traffic at
a high level of granularity to allow selective routing of user session traffic. This
level of control enables operators to deliver different service classes, provide
mobile network services to Wi-Fi users, and balance core network element and Internet
backhaul resources.
Ensuring the interworking of these two platforms has enabled operators in Asia, North
America, and Europe to test highly integrated, differentiated offerings that allow
customers to consume Wi-Fi data in a user-friendly, mobile-centric way.
"In today's world, a subscriber's ability to access a Wi-Fi network is not only
defined by the availability of Wi-Fi, but also by the capabilities of the gateways that
terminate and route traffic," said John Carvalho, VP of Wireless Architecture at Stoke.
"As the industry evolves, operators need new and different capabilities as they attempt to
satisfy users' unending thirst for data consumption."
The Aptilo-Stoke Wi-Fi offload solution is available for trial today.

Duracell Powermat Injects Unequaled 'Brains and Brawn' to Wireless Power
Wireless data fused with wireless power to create a dramatically smarter and more powerful technology
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress -- Wireless power received two major upgrades today, making it both smarter and more powerful in ways previously unknown.
Wireless Data 'Mesh Network' Adds 'Brain' to Wireless Power
Delivering on the promise to make wireless power a 'smart' technology, Duracell Powermat has demonstrated wireless power surfaces that operate as a 'mesh network' - allowing 'Wireless Charging Spots' across the globe to be centrality monitored and managed.
This new network topography is ideal for use in public places such coffee shops, airports and arenas, enabling venues to monitor, upgrade and set policies for each Wireless Charging Spot from a centralized cloud-based system. "Ultimately it allows each venue to send and receive updates and instructions to each Charging Spot in real-time," said Daniel Schreiber, President of Powermat Technologies, the makers of the wireless charging technology that is the basis of all Duracell Powermat products. "This changes wireless power in public places from disjointed, standalone surfaces into a smartglobalnetwork."
This transformation of an analogue consumer product into a digital enterprise platform allows for new consumer use-case scenarios and business models, including:
-- Apps that find the nearest available wireless charging spot wherever you
are.
-- Venues can control who can use their wireless power, for how long and on
what terms.
-- Enterprises with thousands of locations, and hundreds of thousands of
wireless charging spots can monitor usage patterns, assess the health of
their wireless power network and administer support and upgrades
remotely.
"For companies deploying wireless power on an enterprise scale, the combination of wireless power with state-of-the-art communications protocols and cloud-computing is critical. This is what our system offers," said Ron Rabinowitz, CEO Duracell Powermat.
The Ability to Scale Power Delivery from Low to Higher Power Devices Gives Wireless Power Unparalleled 'Brawn'
The second capability on display at the Duracell Powermat stand at Mobile World Congress 2013 is a true breakthrough in "brawn" for the wireless charging industry: Wireless Charging Spots that can scale from powering smartphones, through tablets and all the way to ultrabooks. Capable of delivering 5-to-50 watts of power, the new wireless charging spots use the same form-factor as the thousands already employed in public venues ensuring universal compatibility, while charging devices of various power levels at up to 93% efficiency.
"If you are going to deploy hundreds of Charging Spots, you want to ensure that they are future proof, "said Greg Economou, executive vice president corporate sales and solutions, Madison Square Garden. "Our decision to include Powermat technology in the transformed Madison Square Garden on such a large scale was a direct result of the technology being scalable to our needs and, most importantly, to those of our fans. We aren't aware of any other offering that even comes close."
The combination of both Brawn and Brain means that Duracell Powermat's Charging Spots are uniquely equipped for the scalability requirements of public venues. Indeed, in the USA close to 100% of publically available wireless power utilizes Powermat's technology - including in Madison Square Garden and in select Regis salons, Starbucks stores, Delta Sky Clubs and Westfield Malls and in Jay-Z's 40/40 Club.
About Powermat
Powermat is the pioneer and leader of the wireless power industry. Enjoyed by millions of consumers worldwide, Powermat's technology was formally adopted by the PMA, and is the platform of choice for such global leaders as Duracell, General Motors, AT&T, Starbucks and Madison Square Gardens.
About Duracell Powermat
Duracell Powermat is the joint venture between Duracell and Powermat. As part of the Procter & Gamble Company [NYSE:PG], Duracell has been powering people around the world for more than 40 years, whereas Powermat brought the wireless charging category to life with the introduction of ground-breaking products in 2009. the leader in the worldwide mobile market and SOTI, the world's most trusted provider of
enterprise mobile device management solutions.
Samsung KNOX delivers robust security via the use of advanced containerization
technology to segment personal and corporate content. Traditional containerization
approaches on mobile devices use "application level" containerization which have the
effect of delivering a lower grade of security as well as limiting the native experience
on mobile devices. KNOX containerization is implemented at an operating system (OS) level
allowing the container and its contents to be guarded and protected at a much more deeper
and granular level. KNOX also offers other powerful security features such as the ability
to configure a VPN for the entire container, or for individual applications. Because KNOX
containerization is implemented at an OS level, organizations have the flexibility to
choose the apps they want to install into the container, no external wrapping or special
development is required to make an app eligible for containerization. KNOX also includes a
single sign-on (SSO) authentication system to further enhance the end user experience.
SOTI's MobiControl MDM product leverages Samsung KNOX to deliver a solution that
allows organizations to leverage the benefits of mobility while making sure that their
corporate data is safe and secure. MobiControl allows IT administrators to manage their
data within KNOX containers via an easy to use management console and a powerful set of
management features such as anti-virus configuration, category based web filtering, email
policies, document management, location based management and much more.
"We are pleased to continue our strong relationship with SOTI, reinforcing our history
of delivering innovative features for enterprise mobility, and today with KNOX, SOTI and
Samsung are enabling secure and seamless device management for our customer's devices,"
said Jae Shin, Vice President, B2B Business Group at Samsung Electronics.
"Enterprises requiring a high degree of security on their mobile devices need to
seriously consider Samsung KNOX. KNOX makes containerization a viable option to achieve
mobile security, while not sacrificing user experience. We are very excited to be working
with Samsung and delivering the management of this exciting solution to customers via
MobiControl," said Carl Rodrigues, President and CEO of SOTI.
SOTI is the world's most trusted provider of Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions,
with over 10,000 enterprise customers and millions of devices managed worldwide. SOTI

World Premiere: I-NEW presents its pioneering "MVNO in a MiniBox," the world's smallest telecom system, at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
-- Revolutionary technology to celebrate its premiere at the Mobile World Congress taking place from February 25-28, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain (Hall 5, Booth 5H36).
-- A revolution in mobile telecom technology: banks, insurers, media companies, and retail chains?I-NEW's future-oriented technology makes it possible for companies to start a highly profitable virtual mobile network with only 10,000 customers.
MATTERSBURG, Austria and BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --I-NEW from Mattersburg, Austria, one of the global market leaders in mobile virtual network technology, will celebrate a world premiere at the Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona from February 25-28, 2013 (I-NEW booth, Hall 5, booth number 5H36). With its revolutionary "MVNO in a MiniBox," I-NEW is presenting the smallest telecom system in the world at the world's biggest trade show for mobile technology. While other providers need large server halls filled with complex technology, I-NEW packs the entire technology required for a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) into a system that fits into a single rack. "This has never been done before," says I-NEW's CEO, Peter Nussbaumer, describing the giant technological leap. "Besides telephone services our MiniBox contains all the important system components needed, such as billing, messaging, mobile marketing, customer self-care, and mobile transactions?all in the smallest possible space."
Revolutionary all-in-one-system: Companies with only 10,000 customers can operate a highly profitable mobile virtual network.
For the first time, this revolutionary new technology will be presented at the I-NEW booth in Barcelona (Hall 5, Booth 5H36). "With this product a completely new business model is possible," explains I-NEW's designated member of the board and shareholder, Boris Nemsic, former CEO of Telekom Austria, describing the competitive advantage. "We open new frontiers: Banks, discounters, energy providers, insurers, fashion labels, media companies, sports clubs, or car manufacturers with large target groups or many customers can now offer their own mobile services. With our revolutionary technology, it is possible to operate a small mobile virtual network highly profitably. This was something that before, due to the lack of cost-effective, quickly realizable, and viable technology, was not possible." I-NEW has specialized in technology for MVNOs that do not have their own mobile networks but that obtain the necessary infrastructure from other providers.
MVNO on Occasion: Large-scale events such as Olympic Games or World Championships become a new business case.
Now I-NEW goes a decisive step further: for Olympic Games, World Championships, and other major events, it is possible to establish dedicated mobile networks. "We call this 'MVNO on Occasion,'" says Nemsic. "So a phone call in Peking between two Europeans will no longer cost EUR 4,30 per minute, but only 5 cents."
"What had been missing was the diversity of brands and niches," is how I-NEW CEO Peter Nussbaumer describes the status. "We have been able to reduce the investment costs for the complete MVNO infrastructure by up to 50%, with the MiniBox reducing costs even more. With our innovative technology, the operating costs of the telecom providers can be kept extremely low as well, and the ecological footprint, through low energy consumption, is much smaller than comparable systems. For the telecom industry that globally is battling massive problems, this certainly is a powerful argument. Now companies with only 10,000 customers can be highly profitable, while the same systems can serve millions of customers as well. This all can be accomplished in the record time to market of only a few months."
Large mobile virtual network operators rely on I-NEW technology around the world ? from Virgin Mobile in Latin America, through Mosaic Telecom in the USA, to Skinny in New Zealand.
VIRGIN Mobile Latin America in Chile, and more recently in Columbia, relies on I-NEW technology. "I-NEW's one-stop-shop approach was intriguing to VIRGIN Mobile," says Jim Glass, VIRGIN Latin America's CTO. "The I-NEW platform is highly scalable, providing the ability to enter new markets faster than our competitors." The innovative Austrian technology and software developer?with offices in Colombia, Chile, and Hungary and an operations center in New Zealand?is rapidly becoming one of the most successful and sought-after companies in this quickly expanding field. Vodafone Germany, Egypt Telecom, Serbian Telenor, Saudi Telecom, Z-Mobile Kosovo, Mosaic Telecom USA, Lemontel Cyprus, Leo Namibia, and Skinny Telecom New Zealand already rely on I-NEW technology and offer their customers tailor-made services and applications.
ENTEL in Chile selects I-NEW as Mobile Virtual Network Enabler to serve major regional retail brand Falabella.
ENTEL, Chile's market leader in the telecom industry, recently selected I-New as MVNE partner. "ENTEL's strategy is to operate our wholesale business on a technology environment completely independent from our retail operations. I-NEW's fully integrated architecture and the functional richness provided by their solution, became the best choice to implement our business strategy," says Rafael Fuster, ENTEL's MVNO Business Director. "We are currently deploying our MVNE infrastructure to serve ENTEL and we will support the operations of ENTEL's MVNO customers in Chile and through the region," complements Joaquin Molina, I-NEW's General Manager in Latin America.
Falabella, major regional retail group with operations in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, will be the first MVNO to launch services on ENTEL MVNE. Jose Miguel Torres, Falabella Movil's General Manager, commented, "We will bring increased value to our existing customers with a differentiated and intelligent mobile services offering. The selection of I-NEW as an experienced and highly flexible technology partner is fundamental for our success."
MiniBox as App Server: Unlimited possibilities for I-NEW's future oriented technology.
Industry experts are convinced: a market for billions is developing very rapidly. The trend-setting technological development such as I-NEW's "MVNO in a MiniBox" system can be employed in a variety of ways, i.e., as an app server. Thomas Polak, major shareholder of I-NEW and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, comments on the strategy: "This can include Software as a Service (SaaS) and the machine-to-machine business M2M, which will be major topics of the future. First of all, we have focused very clearly on Latin America, where we are building up platforms together with our customers such as VIRGIN. In two countries, Chile and Columbia, we have established subsidiaries and have become, after only a year, the market leader in Latin America. Additionally we are expanding our European operations, where the demand is increasing. Currently we are receiving at least two requests per day from around the world. Our management has proved that, along with its leading technological innovations, it can generate a global growth. The business model is so attractive because I-NEW can, in combination with the respective subscriber growth of our clients, provide a high cash flow."

New Technical Solution Seamlessly Integrates Operator Services into Mobile Apps, Delivering Exceptional Experiences for Consumers
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The GSMA today announced a new, flexible technical platform, the OneAPI Exchange, which will deliver network capabilities to mobile apps. This latest phase of the OneAPI global initiative, which facilitates closer collaboration between operators and developers, has been undertaken with leading mobile operators including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone. The OneAPI Exchange will be operated by leading technology provider Apigee.
"The OneAPI Exchange promises to elevate the mobile app experience for consumers," said Michael O'Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA. "By supporting closer operator-developer relationships and greater cross-carrier interoperability, the platform will lead to seamless access to exciting mobile apps with enhanced features. End users will benefit from operator services they already know and trust, such as billing, messaging and operator identity, embedded within the apps they choose."
New Flexible Platform for Operator-Developer Collaboration
The new initiative incorporates the work undertaken by the Wholesale Application Community (WAC), which was integrated into the GSMA in July 2012. The OneAPI Exchange, which is currently in a working proof of concept form, improves that capability by giving operators the choice of providing developers with either their own customised application programming interfaces (APIs) or standardised APIs. This leads to better flexibility for operators to participate in the OneAPI Exchange programme, according to their own business objectives, while also providing benefits of scale and reach to their developers through API interoperability.
When a developer selects and registers with an operator developer programme, they are able to build applications that utilise that operator's APIs. The OneAPI Exchange also allows a developer to specify which other operators' networks they would like their app to work with, so services are not limited to the customers of a single operator. The platform seamlessly maps the APIs used by the app onto those used by the consumer's operator.
This federated approach enables operators to either customise the services available on their own platforms, while still reaching a mass market, or expose their network capabilities to developers through standardised APIs.
"The OneAPI Exchange is a completely new model for API interoperability that will dramatically simplify and accelerate the development of telco API-powered apps in a global marketplace. We are extremely pleased to be providing a leading edge solution powered by Apigee technology to the GSMA and its mobile operator members, and look forward to many successful deployments in the year ahead," said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO.
Globalising the OneAPI Solution
As part of the wider OneAPI programme, the OneAPI Gateway was commercially launched in 2012 with leading Canadian operators Bell Mobility, Rogers and TELUS and operated by Transaction Network Services (TNS) and Aepona. This platform, which has delivered access to apps that use network APIs to 93 per cent of Canadian consumers, will be integrated into the global OneAPI Exchange solution.
Standardised location, messaging and payment APIs are already commercially available in Canada through the OneAPI Gateway. A standardised identity API, which allows consumers to register with applications without the need to share a user identity and password with third parties, will be available across the global OneAPI Exchange in Q2 2013. A payment API will also go live on the OneAPI Exchange this year. There will also be the opportunity for other technology providers to collaborate in technical infrastructure developments going forward.
Opportunities for Developers
Through the OneAPI Exchange platform, developers will be able to create 'stickier' apps, enhanced by embedded operator functionality exposed via APIs. Closer operator-developer cooperation will facilitate the worldwide rollout of their apps. Using the OneAPI Exchange, developers can access network APIs using open and standardised web technologies, enabling easy integration across all platform types including Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone as well as WebApps, that run within mobile handset web browsers and the native HTML5 platforms from FirefoxOS, Tizen and Ubuntu.
The OneAPI Exchange further allows developers to maintain a direct relationship with their chosen operator and their development resources. Within this environment, they can then subscribe to an operator network API and choose the additional operators they would like their app to work with. All billing, metrics and usage data is then streamlined through a single operator, eliminating the need for direct and complex multi-carrier onboarding.
"Consumers across the world are increasingly using mobile applications in their business and personal lives," continued O'Hara. "There is now an exciting opportunity for the mobile industry to provide solutions that simplify the app development process, accelerate time to market and facilitate worldwide reach. The OneAPI Exchange will help take the consumer experience to the next level."
Network APIs in Action at Mobile World Congress
A range of mobile app demonstrations will show network APIs in action. These include:
-- Canonical's recently launched Ubuntu Phone OS pilots a simple one-click
log-in using operator authentication and provides operator billing
options for the Ubuntu One music download store;
-- A bike hire scheme and pizza ordering service by Apigee;
-- MYAndroidProtection that safeguards your mobile data against loss, theft
or malware and MYMobileKidsProtection that sets boundaries for children
when using smartphones, both by MYMobileSecurity.
Attendees to Mobile World Congress 2013 can experience these demos in the Connected City, Hall 3, Stands 3B2 and 3C2 and also at the GSMA Pavilion located in Congress Square.

As the global leader in mobile messaging and experts in deploying messaging solutions

Services Portfolio. Designed in line with the changing dynamics of the mobile messaging
and service delivery landscape, Acision's new Global Services Portfolio focuses on 'Value

migration towards next generation technology. With a new structure developed across its
Deployment, Professional Services and Support teams, Acision provides its customers with a
range of services for todays, tomorrows and future networks.
"Over the past few years the dynamics of the mobile messaging ecosystem have changed
radically, with a profusion of new IP, over-the-top (OTT) and social network messaging
services penetrating the industry and taking both mind and market share. With researchers
forecasting that global mobile messaging revenues could grow to $195.9 billion by 2016,
messaging traffic from the expanse of services are likely to double over the next three
years," said Rob Bellis, EVP Global Services, Acision. "Remaining relevant in today's
fast-paced, services-orientated world is a challenge for all players, and to survive means
to carve out a unique role, which means delivering services and solutions which are a step
ahead of the rest, can efficiently and effectively be deployed, maintained and managed,
and can be successfully monetised by gaining insights into performance and traffic flows.
Because of our enduring legacy in messaging, Acision has now developed a solid portfolio
of services to help our customers do just that - bring services to market faster and get

New Acision Research Reveals UK Smartphone Owners Are 'Eclectic Communicators' With 76% Using a Mix of Messaging Services Today
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, February 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
- IM is the preferred service for many, with SMS the assured service for
all, with multiple service usage a common practise
- SMS is a necessity service, with 76% stating their dependency on it
- 78% are interested in an operator service such as 'joyn(TM)', which can
eliminate messaging fragmentation
- Acision encourages operators to act fast with unique service offering in the
evolving market to ensure relevance
Over the past few years we have seen consumers behaviours, expectations and overall
perceptions of messaging evolve, with mobile users now looking for a richer messaging
experience to communicate and connect. This evolution has been backed up by results of
Acision's latest mobile messaging research, which clearly demonstrates that consumers are
opting to use an ever-increasing range of services to communicate. Launched today, the
global messaging leader reveals that 80% of UK Smartphone owners are now using
Over-the-Top (OTT) or Instant Messaging (IM) services, with 76% of these using both SMS
and OTT/IM messaging services together. This indicates a nation of 'eclectic
communicators' with 76% of Smartphone owners using multiple messaging services
simultaneously each day, and 40% using them all the time.
The second edition of Acision's annual research, which analyses messaging behaviours
and requirements of Smartphone users in the UK, also confirmed that text messaging is
still the superior messaging service, with 96% using SMS today. In fact, dependence on SMS
is extremely high, with 76% stating they cannot do without SMS, and 41% stating they would
be lost without it. However, while SMS is clearly needed for the majority of mobile users,
IM/OTT apps are gaining ground, generating 61% of messaging traffic across the numerous
apps. With over half of survey respondents stating they don't mind using multiple
messaging services as they represent communities they have signed up for, 60% also claimed
they cannot do without OTT/IM messaging.
So, why are Smartphone owners using multiple messaging apps and what more can be done
to ensure consumers remain loyal to one service? Acision's research shows that consumers
set a combination of requirements across cost, rich features and service quality; with the
added assurance for all that they can reach anyone at any time. Today, no single service
on the market can provide this, so using SMS with OTT/IM services simultaneously is the
best way to cover all bases.
With the proven high dependency on SMS as the only universal service that will work
instantly across all phones at any time, the respondents claimed reliability (36%) and
reach (34%) as key service qualities which made it their preferred reason to use it.
However, reasons to use OTT/IM included speed (53%) and cost 47%. Furthermore, over one
third enjoy the rich features associated with IM, including 'sent/received' notifications
(39%), seeing a reply being written (34%) and sharing rich content, such as videos and
pictures (29%).
JF Sullivan, Chief Marketing Officer at Acision, commented: "We are seeing a trend
where today's consumers are messaging more over a number of different platforms and via
multiple devices. This proves consumers want something 'extra' - a combination of
universal reach, uncompromised reliability and enriched features - which can only be
fulfilled today by using multiple services concurrently. This so-called "schizophrenic"
messaging, shows consumer's hop from one service to another, depending on shifting trends
and usage of contacts, instigating a fragmented market. While text has been king for over
20 years, the difference between service usage is beginning to even out. However, while
the market is moving rapidly, there is a huge untapped opportunity for operators to launch
one consolidated messaging platform which combines all consumer requirements and can take
the messaging land grab."
Since the launch of the GSMA's consumer brand for its family of Rich Communications
Suite standards (RCS-e, RCS5), 'joyn(TM)', significant steps have been made by industry
players to formally bring a more robust messaging service to market which addresses all
these areas. While this is rapidly gaining the attention and investment of operators
worldwide, only 6% of users polled in the UK had ever heard of the 'joyn(TM)' initiative.
However, when described the service, 78% said they would try 'joyn(TM)' with the right
pricing, with only 5% saying they would not use it at all.
To understand the opportunity for operators to offer richer features as part of their
rich messaging or RCS, 'joyn(TM)' service, Acision asked the attractiveness of the
following features. When introduced to a service which can reach anyone on any
application, 64% stated that they would find it attractive. 62% also stated a service
where they received the message on all their smart devices, so followed them as they moved
from one device to another, would also be valuable. SMS fall back, which guarantees
immediate delivery of a message via SMS when other applications are not available due to
the broadband connection was also deemed as very attractive by 59%. Additionally,
consumers stated that a service which reaches everyone from a single application (58%), as
well as provided a single conversation trail (52%) from all apps in a single view would be
an attractive service if it was available. "The requirement for SMS fall back demonstrates
that users want to continue interaction when offline or to reach users that are not part
of their communities. For this, the unique capability is SMS and MMS interworking which
can only be offered by mobile operators and can be a silver bullet their service
offering," stated Sullivan.
Because the vast majority of UK mobile subscribers are still reliant on SMS, Acision
also questioned interest in rich messaging features, which enhance the traditional SMS
experience and brings it more in line with the OTT user experience. Highly appealing
features included SMS notifications (59%), the ability to black- or white list contacts
(58%), to see a contacts presence (43%), and SMS forwarding (39%). This shows a clear
opportunity to improve the SMS user experience and bring rich features to non IM users,
especially feature phone owners.
"Operators have the power to enhance and enrich traditional messaging and improve
perception of speed by introducing notifications and presence, making content sharing more
attractive by interworking with MMS, as well as providing more contact control with black
and white listing. This combined with fast-tracking RCS based services, means operators
can create a new ecosystem where all users, whether on feature phone or Smartphone, get a
rich, ubiquitous experience breaking the fragmentation barrier and enabling monetisation
of services with new commercial models. The positive response to joyn(TM) and enriched
features, is a good gauge that Smartphone users want a single service at the right cost,
which provides reach, reliability, and richness. If operators act now, they can carve out
a niche service experience which improves user satisfaction and stickiness while leading
the IP messaging revolution," concluded Sullivan.

Firefox OS Enables App Discovery without Download and Firefox Marketplace Unlocks the Power of Web Apps on Mobile Phones
Mozilla Revolutionizes Creation and Consumption of Web Content - Firefox Marketplace will offer apps including Cut the Rope, Disney Mobile Games, EA games, Facebook, MTV Brasil, Nokia HERE, SoundCloud and Twitter
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress - Mozilla, the mission-based organization dedicated to keeping the power of the Web in people's hands, today announced Firefox OS will launch with Firefox Marketplace, and a new ability to discover one-time use and downloadable apps to give people a powerful, personalized, speedy and enjoyable smartphone experience while also enabling easy creation, distribution and discovery of HTML5 apps worldwide.
Firefox OS
Firefox OS will power the world's first Open Web Devices in key emerging markets and offer the performance, personalization and price you want in a smartphone. Firefox OS delivers a beautiful, clean, intuitive, personalized and easy-to-use experience that has built-in features to help manage data and storage usage while maximizing your value, time and overall enjoyment of the smartphone experience.
Firefox OS includes all the things people need from a smartphone out of the box - calls, messaging, email, camera and more - as well as the things you wish a smartphone offered, like built-in cost controls, social features with Facebook and Twitter, location-based services, much-loved features like the Firefox Web browser, new ability to discover one-time use and downloadable apps, Firefox Marketplace and much more.
"Every device is better if it's social and we're excited that Firefox OS users will have easy access to the mobile Web-based version of Facebook that will take advantage of our current and future features," said Vaughan Smith, VP of Mobile Partnerships at Facebook.
With Firefox OS, you can simply enter any search term and instantly create a one-time use or downloadable app. Creating and consuming these apps on demand puts users in complete control of their app and smartphone experience and will make it possible for people to get the exact content they want, when they want it.
Firefox OS offers a deep contextual search that will take you to the exact content you want instead of just generic apps in the same category. It will allow far more sophisticated and deeper search capabilities as you can search both within apps and on the Web at the same time, which is not possible with native apps. For example, search for your favorite music artist and get results to buy your favorite song, concert tickets or even listen to your favorite song instantly.
Firefox OS is an extension of the Firefox experience you know and love so you can expect all the security, privacy, customization and user control Firefox has always delivered.
Because Firefox OS is based on Web technologies it offers users, developers and operators a highly customizable smartphone experience and even has offline capabilities for all the phone's core functionalities.
Firefox Marketplace
Firefox Marketplace will offer apps in categories like games, news and media, business and productivity. These apps are tied to you and your online identity to take across devices and platforms. Leading mobile apps and Web developers around the globe will leverage the power of the Web unlocked by Mozilla to release apps in the Firefox Marketplace.
The Web enables limitless innovation and with Firefox Marketplace, every Web developer can easily create and distribute HTML5 apps so you can find an app for whatever you want - even local, niche and emerging topics. Firefox Marketplace will include popular apps such as AccuWeather, Airbnb, Box, Cut the Rope, Disney Mobile Games, EA games, Facebook, Nokia HERE, MTV Brasil, Pulse News, SoundCloud, SporTV, Terra, Time Out and Twitter as well as personally-tailored and local apps that are relevant to users in their respective regions.
"Firefox OS provides us with a great opportunity to reach new consumers in emerging markets," said Glenn Roland, VP of New Platforms and OEM at EA. "We're pleased to bring HTML5 versions of top games including Poppit! from Pogo, as well as several popular mobile titles to the cross-platform Firefox Marketplace this year."
"Bringing such popular titles as Where's My Water? and Where's My Perry? to the Firefox Marketplace is a great opportunity to increase our network of players in developing markets," said Bart Decrem, SVP of Disney Mobile Games. "Having worked with Mozilla in the past, I'm especially enthusiastic about the potential of Firefox OS."
"Firefox OS enables the new MTV Brasil app to give people access to all of the news, video and multimedia content developed for mobile devices, including shows that are currently on air, said Robson Gomes, MTV Brasil Technology Manager. "Firefox OS makes it easier to give people the content they want and this is another important tool to access MTV Brasil's universe of humor, music and lifestyle."
Most mobile apps are built with Web technologies at the core and then wrapped in a proprietary technology to distribute the app on a specific platform. Mozilla is unlocking the Web as a mobile development platform with Firefox Marketplace and unwrapping mobile apps to enable more opportunity and control for developers and consumers.
Firefox Marketplace will make smartphones capable of offering more powerful and immersive Web app experiences. The Web now has the potential to be the world's largest marketplace with the new Web APIs Mozilla developed. The open Web platform and these new Web APIs also enable developers to distribute apps directly, with no need for gatekeepers, true to the Mozilla mission of creating choice, innovation and opportunity on the Web.
"Firefox OS will break down the walls between apps and the Web because Firefox OS apps are built using Web technologies, like HTML5. We expect to see lots of amazing apps people love built for Firefox OS because more developers are already creating for the Web than for any other platform," said Jay Sullivan, Mozilla Senior Vice President of Products. "Firefox OS delivers a rich, delightful and personalized experience for users and people can search for anything that is on their mind to discover relevant apps that can be used instantly, even apps they've never installed or used before."
Firefox Marketplace can be previewed on Firefox for Android Aurora and will be offered with the first Firefox OS phones to launch later this year.

To build on its success in 2012, Huawei's new 'Make it Possible' brand initiative aimed at consumers worldwide will be a top focus for this year as the company shifts gears to be recognized as a global consumer brand.
In 2012, out of 52 million handsets shipped, 32 million were smartphone shipments, representing an increase of 60% from the previous year. The company also shipped 50 million mobile broadband (MBB) devices and 25 million home devices during the 12 months.
