l33t Keyboard

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on December 21, 2002 at 6:29:06 AM
True l33tness comes at a price though... $100.

The pictures speak for themselves. This keyboard looks stunning in the dark. Even with the lights on, the clear keys give the board a unique look.

Grab the download here.

There is no change in anything, so if you don't need DX9, don't bother updating.

Intel licensing problems again

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 20, 2002 at 3:01:58 PM
This could be the end of SiS in the Intel sector. When Springdale comes, no one will have any rights to make it!

Quote

Of the two technologies, licensing on the 800MHz FSB standard is more crucial to board makers, Asustek Computer said, as it is closely related to companies’ marketing planning as well as product sales. Without the licensing, manufacturers will not be able to feature support for the new-generation P4 processors in their products. As a result, if Taiwanese chipset designers are unable to get the licensing, board makers will have to adopt more Intel chipsets. Judging from the current conditions, board makers predicted that the ratio of their Intel-based products is likely to continue rising next year.

Intel chipsets are usually more costly than third party peeps.

3D Displays by the end of next year!

Poster: Aron Schatz

Alright, this will make games AMAZING! Think about having stuff wiz by you, without special glasses! It is coming.

Quote

Bringing 3D viewing to the computing world has been a longtime goal. Although several companies have come out with Web browser software and other technology to make images appear to pop off the screen, the Web largely remains a two-dimensional world. To most people, 3D still means paper glasses with red and blue lenses or the hologram image of Princess Leia in "Star Wars."

Semiconductors still weak from previous quarters

Even though the chip industry rose in sales, it is still much lower than in the first part of the year. Economic slowdown or what?

Quote

Equipment billings, a measure of the value of equipment accepted by customers and booked as revenue, was $991 billion in November. That was down 1 percent from the adjusted October level of $1 billion and up 21 percent from the $817 million posted a year earlier, the San Jose, Calif.-based industry group said.

Music can take over your computer

The RIAA must be laughing now. Music can take over your computer. If you use XP or Winamp, better check this out.

Quote

The music industry and Hollywood are eyeing such hacking tactics as a way to stop file swappers from trading copyrighted music in the future. A bill sponsored by Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., and Howard Coble, R-N.C., and introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives in July, would allow copyright owners limited rights to hack into peer-to-peer networks.

$200 is the magic number

Yep, cheap is good. Those $200 PCs are catching on fast.

Quote

The PCs don't have Windows preinstalled but rely on software from several companies, including Lindows, that use the open-source Linux operating system, which can be used as an alternative to Microsoft's Windows. Dropping Windows is part of the reason why manufacturers can sell the PCs so cheaply.

A+ For Breaking The Rules!

A kid recently hacked into his schools grade system and he changed his GPA from a 4.0 (perfect) to a 1.9 (a D) for a school project. The school was so amazed that he did this, that they gave him an A on his project. Then he changed it back, just to make sure he got the right grade.Wow...I want to break the rules Smile

Quote

The hacking project, which was sanctioned by the school, left administrators so impressed they gave him a perfect score. The school is now working on fixing the security holes.

Audiovisual Linux soon

Wow, Sony and Matsushita are making a distro for audiovisual needs! Take that Mediacenter!

Quote

The companies will collaborate to create a version of Linux that boots quickly and offers snappy performance for use in digital video recorders and other audiovisual devices. Digital video recorders capture television programs and store them on a hard drive for later viewing. The operating system might also be used in portable devices, the companies said in a statement.
...
Access to a fully developed operating system can save companies a significant amount of money by cutting the number of software engineers, the development time and the testing needed to put out new products.

DMCA woes again

It is a hard to read artile. And I'm not sure what to quote.

Quote

By repealing key portions of the DMCA, Boucher's bill would have prevented the Justice Department from prosecuting ElcomSoft, a Russian company that sold a program to remove the copy protection from Adobe's e-books. If the proposed Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act, co-sponsored by John Doolittle, R-Calif., were to become law, ElcomSoft's Advanced eBook Processor would become legal to sell.

Piano black finish, noise-reduced PSU, 120mm case fan, unique case flow, grommets for HDD decoupling, and a brilliant 90 degree rotation in HDD mounting -- how do they all add up? AOL owns IM

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 18, 2002 at 2:56:34 AM
Validated by the US gov at least. Issued recently, this gives AOL a huge ego now. And it could spell trouble for MSN and others.

Quote

The patent (6449344), originally filed in 1997, and granted in September this year, gives AOL instant messaging subsidiary ICQ rights as the inventor of the popular IM Internet application. The patent covers anything resembling a network that lets multiple IM users see when other people are present and then communicate with them.

More Intergraph sueing

This company is just trash. Making money all over the place, from other's businesses.

Quote

Intergraph's revenue from legal activity now rivals its services and software business. In the first nine months of 2002, Intergraph's revenue from services and software came to $379.2 million, with a total of $532 million expected for the year, according to the company. By comparison, its court-mandated payments from Intel alone this year come to $450 million and could rise to $550 million.

AOL wins over spammers

Poster: Aron Schatz

AOL has successfully defeated, for the second time, an adult spam company. They got $7 Million in damages. At least AOL tries to keep spam away. (Note, tries)

Quote

AOL has a long history of fighting junk e-mailers. The company has filed about 20 lawsuits with more than 100 defendants. It's also played up spam-filtering technology in its new Web access software, AOL 8.0, which launched in October. The software lets subscribers report spam with the click of a button. The process helps AOL bolster its filtering technology. Since the software's launch, the company said, AOL has been able to reduce the amount of incoming spam by 20 percent as a result of members' spam reports.

Storage building bricks

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 17, 2002 at 3:05:38 PM
IBM is has once again had a good idea (to me anyway). Storage bricks that are stackable will give admins an easy way to maintain their storage farm.

Quote

A three-by-three-by-three stack has 27 bricks, but a six-by-six-by-six collection would have 216. With a collection of eight bricks on a side, there would be 512 bricks--6,144 hard drives--in a system a little wider than an adult's arm span.

There is a picture of a prototype in the news article.

Monday night reviews

Wet dream heatsink @ Voidedwarranty.
No more taking the panel off of your case just to change the speed settings of your HSF. I would like to give some props to Cooler Master for this new design. Good work guys... Even if I did think of it first. Right...

Some alloy bezels and stuff.
Cooler Master has developed two specific types of RAM chip coolers, which consist of an all copper, and all aluminium based solution. Each package contains 8 ram chip coolers in total measuring approximately 22mm (W) x 8mm (L) x 5mm (H). The chip coolers have been designed to be universal and used in a wide variety of applications which include RAM cooling, GPU video card cooling as well as motherboard chipset cooling. Cooler Master has advised that these kits should meet all heat dissipation requirements for current and future RAM chips currently on the market. Consumers contemplating the use of these kits should measure their existing components prior to purchase.

Connect3D Radeon 9700 Pro. My R9500 Pro should be here tomorrow!
Today I'm not going to be reviewing an ATI card; I'm going to be reviewing an ATI based card made by Connect3D. This key difference reflects a shift in focus for ATI, who traditionally have designed and produced their own boards from start to finish. This was in contrast to NVIDIA, who designed GPUs, and then licensed those designs to third party producers.

Flashy colors mousy thing.
The Grast 24 is a translucent optical mini-mouse. Like most optical mini-mice, it works on any surface and at any angle. Because it's translucent, you can see the glow of the optical laser. Its fun feature is the ability to change the laser's color. Pick from any one of 24 colors just by holding down the mouse button. Or, have the mouse constantly cycle through its palette. Thanks to a hidden switch, the choice is yours.

i845PE Albatron.
The mainboard is extremely stable in the configurations we tested it. Right now it is running constantly overclocked with a 150 MHz FSB. As a result of such overclocking (and any P4 can do this FSB easily) we can enable turbo mode in the BIOS which made our memory run at 400 MHz (you need specific DDR400 compatible memory for that) we see results that are really awesome as memory bandwidth passes 3000MB/sec.

VIA vs nVidia and Epox.
For now, it is safe to say that nVidia has taken the crown of AMD chipset leader from VIA. I do not foresee any KT400 motherboard beating out an equivalent nForce2 offering in the near future. Until VIA releases its KT400A early next year, I don't realistically believe the performance title in the AMD-based sector will even "maybe" change hands.

Intel wants global wireless

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 16, 2002 at 8:37:26 PM
Wow, maybe in a few decades. Intel is really pushing for this as Banias approaches. It is their new wireless mobile chipset.

Quote

The chipset offers both 802.11a and 802.11b wireless connectivity at 54 Mbps and 11 Mbps, respectively. It is backward compatible with existing wireless local area networking (WLAN) infrastructure, provides access to corporate and home networks, and enables a growing number of wireless hot spots in airports, hotels, restaurants and other public sites.

Under the multiyear agreement, iPass and Intel will validate the interoperability between the future release of iPassConnect client software and Banias-based notebooks with the Intel WLAN Network Interface Card. PC manufacturers, IT departments and end users will have a single interface for dial-up, wired and public wireless access worldwide.

According to the company, which measured results up to the end of the second week of December, the most active virus this year was Klez.H with 4.9 million copies stopped by MessageLabs. Yaha.E came second with 1.1 million copies, then it was Bugbear.A with 842,333, Klez.E with 380,937 and SirCam.A with 309,832. These figures only represent the numbers stopped by MessageLabs for its corporate customers. The actual numbers of these viruses are much higher.

Netscape offers anti popup control

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 15, 2002 at 2:24:32 PM
The commercial version of Mozilla finally incorporates one of its best features. It even blocks AOL's ads.

Quote

"Netscape's inclusion of a pop-up blocker reflects the changing nature that its parent company AOL has toward its customers," Gartenberg said. "As AOL recently announced that it would begin to remove pop-ups that are universally reviled by consumers, this addition to Netscape is a logical progression. While useful to the few Netscape users that are still out there, it's not likely to win many new converts."

Watch out for the Sims Online

A really long article here. It goes into how the Sims Online will flourish and stuff. Then it says that EA does alot of testing on their products before shipping them. Well, just look at Earth and Beyond. That game turned into crap pretty fast.

Quote

At least as significant as the numbers is the kind of audience "The Sims Online" is likely to attract. "The Sims" has drawn one of the most diverse audiences in gaming--more than 50 percent female, and broadly distributed across age groups--with a unique style of game play that emphasizes creativity and self-made narratives. Players control a single family of characters, guiding them in tasks ranging from career climbing to interior decorating to forming friendships with computer-controlled next-door neighbors.

CompUSA wireless optical mouse.
This one is right here, click it dammit!

Swiftech GPU Block.
You can also see where Swiftech had their thinking caps on, and machined the base to be compatible with ATI's shim design on their current cards, so it makes full contact with the VPU. Taking a look inside the block, you can see Swiftech's Patent Pending Diamond-Pin Matrix design that promotes turbulence in the block to dissipate heat quickly, and improve the efficiency of core cooling.

Albatron i845PE action at HWGuru.
Although both systems overclocked the same, the Albatron pulled ahead on all counts, largely due to the use of its 2.66 memory divider. The maximum the Abit could use was 2.0, whereas the Albatron was using 2.66, this proved to the deciding factor, as shown in the huge differences of the overclocked memory bandwith Sandra test.

Bench-House and the MSI granite bay.
The potential of the Intel newcomer is obvious, and it will be definitely used to the fullest in the following improved versions. This is clearly a product that brings a new level of quality and performance, so on the basis of that it deserves our unreserved recommendation.

Dream cooler from Coolermaster.
The X-Dream’s performance is better than any other Socket A cooler I have reviewed to date. Even at the lowest fan speeds, the unit provides more than adequate cooling.

The mini ITX at Tweaknews.
In my opinion, this board could and should replace an entry level DVD player and computer. This board with the ethernet could easily 'hide' in a living room feeding audio and video to the entire house at the direction of a remote computer.

Active-Hardware and the ECS L4S8A.
ECS has always been able to attract users to their motherboards using a combination of low prices, and interesting features. The ECS L4S8A itself represents a great buy if you don't want to invest a large sum of money in a new mobo.

Friday Morning reviews

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 13, 2002 at 4:54:07 PM
Got stuff coming for review. Today is the CompUSA wireless optical mouse for $20.

Antec Plusview1000AMG - SOHO File Server.
Performance is a major aspect of this towers appeal. Before utilizing the Plusview 1000AMG I had been using an aluminum tower. It was equipped well enough for airflow and had offered me sufficient temps, yet the location of fans, combined with the fact that I had to flip my PSU over to get it installed, made some major dents to my CPU temps. The PLUSVIEW 1000AMG proved that it deserves its place in the Antec’s Performance Series as my system temps dropped from the low 50’s to the mid 30’s.

MAGNUM graphic cards water cooler.
The VGA cooler MAGNUM is suitable for Silent Freaks just as for Overclocker. Graphic cards are cooled optimal and noiselessly.

Vapochill PE at HardOCP.
The temperatures achieved by the unit were phenomenal, the VapoChill took everything we threw at it and then some without breaking a sweat. -16C CPU temperatures under load with almost no noise are amazing. When it comes to super cool computing, all you extreme overclockers out there need to look no further than the VapoChill if a "plug and play" solution is what you are in the market for.

Gigabyte i845PE action @ OCCC.
I can't help but view the I845PE chipset as a quick-money maker on Intel's part, before Dual-DDR chipsets are made available to the public.

Tweaktown and Chaintech nForce 2.
"The original nForce chipset from nVidia did not turn out to be much of a success for the then new player in the chipset sector. nVidia have since learned from their mistakes and given us the nForce2 dual channel DDR-333 and DDR-400 chipset for the AMD Athlon platform. Today TweakTown gives us a full run down on Chaintech's feature-packed Zenith 7NJS nForce2 based motherboard. Have nVidia really learned from their mistakes?"

There is much more... but I'm to lazy to search... Just email me instead at news@aselabs.c

Radeon 9500 Pro in short supply?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 13, 2002 at 3:53:48 PM
Digitimes is reporting that the Radeon 9500 Pro is in short supply due to OEMs buying them all up. If that is the case, why is one being sent to me as I type this? I bought it from Newegg yesterday, expect a review (just an upgrade based review) about a week after I get it. Need to test the games Smile.

Quote

The Radeon 9500 PRO has been well-accepted by the high-end market due to its appealing price/performance ratio. Based on the company’s new-generation R300 core, the Radeon 9500 PRO is designed with the same eight-pipeline architecture as the Radeon 9700 PRO but cards sporting the chip are sold at much lower prices. According to an earlier ATI announcement, Radeon 9500 PRO cards retail for US$199 and Radeon 9700 PRO cards for US$399.

Cyberterrorism to strike hard in 2003

I don't know how they come up with these theories. 'A major cyberterrorism event will disrupt the economy and bring the Internet to its knees for at least a day or two.'

Gantz sees the cyberthreat arising from a potential war with Iraq, which has been the object of intense international scrutiny. The United States government has charged the Middle Eastern country with harboring weapons of mass destruction and has made clear its displeasure with the country's ruler, Saddam Hussein.
