Intel Springdale soon

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 1, 2003 at 4:46:00 PM
The new Dual DDR400 chipset from Intel should be out this quarter. Let's see if VIA or SiS can top this on.

Quote

Intel’s Springdale chipsets are set to beat Taiwanese competitors to shipment, with small-volume releases as early as the first quarter of 2003 and motherboards based on the chipsets shipping by the second quarter, according to Taiwanese motherboard makers.

Taiwanese chipset designers VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) may not enter volume production of their dual-channel DDR400-supporting, 800MHz FSB (front-side bus) chipsets – the PT600 and 655FX, respectively – until the second quarter.

About $74 billion in ecommerce

Poster: Aron Schatz

2002 was a good year for consumbers, with prices and everything very low. I wonder what 2003 will be like.

Quote

Privacy remains a stumbling block for e-commerce as a whole, according to comScore's survey, with 38 percent of the panel describing themselves as "uncomfortable" giving out credit card information online. Roughly the same percentage said they worried about the security of online financial transactions, and 40 percent expressed concern over online privacy generally.

That's the truth, my Mom won't even put her credit card near the computer for fear of it being stolen.

80 percent of people surveyed expect to find good information online

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 30, 2002 at 6:08:50 AM
Yeah, reliable news and stuff online. Don't throw out your hard copy newpaper.

Quote

About 60 percent of 2,000 people surveyed in the Pew Internet and American Life Project study said they use the Web regularly. Two-thirds of those had been online for three or more years.

At least 80 percent of the Internet users questioned in September and October said they expect to find reliable information about news events, health care and government services on the Web.

Almost as many Internet users, 79 percent, said they expect to find a business with a Web site that will give them information about a product they are considering buying.

I think this is pretty sad, the online info I go online for is computer stuff. Real news, I get elsewhere.

Sunday reviews

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 29, 2002 at 4:11:23 PM
Well, the Radeon 9500 Pro Overclocking article got a few hits since the last two days. Check it out if you haven't already. There is a chance that'll I'll be getting a 5 megapixel camera to test out, but we'll see how that pans out first.

Sound Blaster Audigy 2.
As you could tell by the benchmarks, this one hundred dollar card beats out the ten dollar bargain sound cards by a mile and a half, but what about those of you running the Audigy, or a rip off created by another company you ask? Well, the benefits of the Audigy 2 are that it supports Dolby 6.1 and you have a cool looking 2 after the word Audigy on the box. My Live card is sucking for some reason, I really think it is the horrid Creative drives. Anyone got a solution?

Swiftech H20-8500 Watercooling Kit.
This kit is aimed at those who want the low noise operation of watercooling, but are confined to a somewhat small case and/or those who don't want to fool with extensive modding of their case to accommodate a watercooling setup. The only requirement for your case is at least one 80mm rear exhaust fan opening and an empty 5 1/2" drive bay.

Corsair PC3500 512MB DDR.
Nevertheless, the Corsair XMS3500 memory delivers what it promises with killer performance and awesome looks and we highly recommend the Corsair XMS3500 for users who want nothing but the best!

Have you had enough OTES?
Notice the cooling involved in this gigantic beast. The length is almost an inch longer than a standard Ti4200. The heat pipe transfers the heat from the GPU to the copper fins where the air is blown out. The design looks very clean.

Samsung 42inch plasma TV. This is basically a TV, not a monitor...
After watching countless DVD's on good old televisions, tiny computer screens, high-resolution LCD displays, and even rear projection HDTV's, I can say without a doubt; once you go plasma you never go back!

16x DVD-R drives in 2004

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 29, 2002 at 3:40:19 PM
I remember when I bought a 2x CDR drive for $300. That was pretty top of the line. DVD is becoming just as CD was a few years ago. They really should only start making DVDs instead of CD drives and phase out CDs already.

Quote

For users, the eventual arrival of 16X drives will bring big benefits. At that speed drives will be capable of writing data at 176 megabits per second (mbps) which means a complete 4.7GB DVD disc can be written in three and a half minutes, according to Mitsubishi. That compares with around 14 minutes for today's fastest 4X drives and almost an hour for a first-generation drive.

PHP 4.3.0 gold

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 28, 2002 at 6:11:36 AM
Yep, the awesome new version is out. Grab it here. I've been waiting for this version ever since it was in beta. This is the first branch that combines the GD library into the PHP core! Finally, no more graphics library hassles.

Quote

GD library is now bundled with the distribution and it is recommended to always use the bundled version
vpopmail and cybermut extensions are moved to PECL
several deprecated extensions (aspell, ccvs, cybercash, icap) and SAPIs (fastcgi, fhttpd) are removed
speed improvements in a variety of string functions
Apache2 filter is improved, but is still considered experimental (use with PHP in prefork and not worker (thread) model since many extensions based on external libraries are not thread safe)
various security fixes (imap, mysql, mcrypt, file upload, gd, etc)
new SAPI for embedding PHP in other applications (experimental)
much better test suite
significant improvements in dba, gd, pcntl, sybase, and xslt extensions
debug_backtrace() should help with debugging
error messages now contain URLs linking to pages describing the error or function in question
Zend Engine has some fixes and minor performance enhancements
and TONS of other fixes, updates, new functions, etc

The server should be updated with this soon (I hope... Ping?)

Single Chip Linux computer

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 27, 2002 at 9:29:30 PM
By single chip, I mean nothing else is needed. Heh, what can you do on it? Most likely nothing. It is for embedded applications. Built in networking and stuff too.

Quote

Axis Communications, a global leader in network technology, announced today the availability of the AXIS ETRAX 100LX MCM 2+8, a new generation system-on-a-chip that integrates 2MB Flash, 8MB SDRAM and an Ethernet transceiver into a single chip with a 27mm x 27mm footprint. The chip, which is designed for networked devices such as wireless access points, digital video recorders and access control and security systems, enables developers to reduce costs in both the design and production cycles.
By integrating the most common components used in a standard ETRAX-based hardware design, nearly all of the mandatory components for building a networked device are included in an extremely small chip. The integrated approach makes the ETRAX 100LX MCM a competitive choice for developers needing to improve efficiency in the development process. With the most time-consuming components already integrated into the chip, the ETRAX 100LX MCM enables developers to shorten the time to market and focus on product development.

China closes 3300 Inet Cafes after fire breaks out

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 27, 2002 at 9:10:43 PM
Well, China has a crap load of internet cafes. I personally haven't seen any inperson. But 3,300 of them were closed due to poor fire protection and other problems.

Quote

China sentenced two Beijing boys to life in prison in August for starting the city's worst fire in 50 years. Police said the boys were angry because cafe staff would not let them surf there.

Web users at the Lanjisu (Blue Hyperspeed) cafe were trapped inside the blazing den because its door was locked and windows blocked by iron bars. A few customers escaped by squeezing through a bathroom window.

A bit different than what would happen in the US. The boys would sue after setting the fire and then they would get a assload of money. Funny isn't it?

Friday reviews

Posted on December 27, 2002 at 4:28:31 PM
Well, my Radeon 9500 Pro overclocking review is up for your reading pleasure. Be sure to spread the word on it as well Smile.

Vantec Aeroflows @ OCA.
The concern I had with the socket 478 Aeroflow was that it did not give complete contact with the Intel heat spreader. Although it did not harm performance, I believe that having a complete contact would give much better results.

OTES @ digital-daily.
Unfortunately, nothing is to be excited about in here. In our test system we failed to overclock the memory, which was no surprise since the cooling is still missing. The maximum speed the specimen was running stably is 575MHz, which is merely 25MHz greater than the nominal frequency.

Asus nForce 2 @ AMDmb.
Overall, I would have no problem recommending the Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard to anyone looking to build a system based on the Athlon XP 333 MHz FSB processors. The nForce2 chipset has all the power you could want and hope for to draw all the performance out of the processor.

TwinMOS PC3200 @ theDDRzone.
The TwinMOS memory was able to perform the full range of tests, plus extra looping tests at up to 202Mhz with aggressive memory timings ie. 2-2-2-8. At 203Mhz Prime95 failed, although the other tests still completed successfully - anything higher resulted in everything crashing. Reducing these timing settings (2.5-4-4-10 in the BIOS) allowed speeds of at least 217Mhz, the maximum obtainable out of the A7V8X without having a CPU capable of a 220Mhz FSB.

The yea in review @ AMDWorld.
Dedicated video card manufacturers must have had a mixed time during 2002 and one large American outfit did suffer that was Visiontek who were a number one supplier in North America up until they went bankrupt so to speak and this is no doubt was a classic example of a manufacturer like Nvidia saturating the market at every cost and not targeting the third party suppliers with caution.

pcToys DDR heat spreaders @ WinHQ.
Way back in October 2001, we reviewed the Thermaltake Active Cooling Kit when heat spreaders weren't a very big issue with memory overclocking. This was a time of 150MHz ram running at stock voltage. A year later, much is different.

Instant Messaging Patents for AOL

Poster: Subjugation

AOL Time Warner recieved some patents for instant messaging. What does this mean for all you MSN IMers? Nothing for now, but we'll see what Time Warner does with it's patents.

In the latest example of a potentially market-defining patent being granted without fanfare, AOL Time Warner quietly has become the owner of a patent, granted in September by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, that covers much of the technology behind instant-messaging services.

Coding day Today!! (Bug Fixing)

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 26, 2002 at 6:30:53 AM
Okay, I am writing my Radeon 9500 Pro overclocking review today. It'll be published tomorrow. I have all the numbers and pictures already.

What I need to do tomorrow is code and stuff, while I'm writing. The review will take about an hour or two to write up, so send me all the bugs and stuff you find! Also, suggestions are most welcome.

If you are a member of this site (and you should be), you may have noticed that I increased the storage space for Avatars, they are now at 14KB, double the original size. If space becomes a problem which I doubt it will, I'll find ways around it. Also, if you check your theme options in the user preferences, you'll notice a new link section. This will allow you to change how the links are shown on the site (ASE Labs, ASEville will come when all the features are done here). Check it out and tell me how you like it. I'm working on adding font size adjustments and link weight.

That's all for now, remember, SEND ME ALL THE BUGS ON THE SITE!!

Broadband companies looking to telcos for access

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 25, 2002 at 12:55:53 AM
It seems that AOL and peeps are going to be turning to the local places instead of providing their own service. This cobranded service may work well.

Quote

AOL announced plans along those lines last month, falling in behind Yahoo and MSN. And analysts believe such partnerships are likely to take off next year, fueling growth in an industry that has faced high costs for both providers and consumers.

"I think 2003 has to be the year that a large portion of the transition to getting more broadband access for Internet services comes forward," said David Joyce, an analyst at Guzman & Company.

Microsoft to infringe on PDF

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 24, 2002 at 3:06:25 PM
Adobe may not be that worried, but this is the first kind of compitetion in its field in ten years.

Quote

"I'm surprised Microsoft has let Adobe own this space as long as they have," said Paul DeGroot, lead analyst for research firm Directions on Microsoft. "Something like 80 percent of the world's business documents are created in Microsoft's .doc format. But when people need to exchange documents, there's no compact, easy-to-download, secure way to exchange them and preserve all the fonts and formatting and layout. The requirement for this kind of format was obvious to Adobe 10 years ago, and they capitalized on it."

Java on Windows, by court order

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 24, 2002 at 5:56:10 AM
That's right. The courts ordered that Microsoft can't force people to use their proprietary software instead of openly used standards (Such as Java). WinXP didn't have java right?

Quote

This decision is a huge victory for consumers who will have the best, latest Java technology on their PCs, and it is a victory for software developers who will write applications to run on those PCs," Sun said in a statement. "The decision helps ensure that current, compatible Java technology will be included on every consumer desktop and put an end to Microsoft's practice of fragmenting the Java platform."

VIA wins over Intel

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 23, 2002 at 9:53:06 PM
Remember in 2001 when Intel sued VIA over their P4X266 chipset. Well, VIA did not infringe on any patents of Intel's.

Quote

In 2001, Intel filed suit against Via in several countries, including the United States and England, saying that the company's Apollo P4X266 chip set violated Intel patents.

In August 2001, Intel reportedly warned computer makers to steer clear of the new chip set, saying that they risked being entangled in costly legal battles. Via's chip set was the first to support Intel's Pentium 4 chip, but Intel claimed that Via, of Taipei, Taiwan, was not licensed to sell technology compatible with Pentium 4.

Over $11 billion in online shopping from Nov 1st

That number--an increase of about 40 percent from the same period last year--comes from shopping comparison site BizRate, which surveys consumers as they finish making purchases. BizRate has about 2,000 stores in its database.

The figures arrive amid a discouraging season for retail in general. Major retailers including Wal-Mart, Federated Department Stores and Kmart all noted that sales for the holiday season would be at the low end of their forecasts, or miss them altogether.

It seems that popups weren't enough. Now even if you move your mouse over an ad, it'll go to the advert's webpage! Get a popupstopper!!!!!

Quote

But a relatively new feature may make it harder for people to avoid these windows. Using a technique called the "kick through," advertisers can direct a person to another Web site if they simply move their cursor across the pop-up ad--no clicking is necessary.

IBM goes open source for storage tank

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 21, 2002 at 2:29:45 PM
IBM's new storage tank technology will utilize open source versions of the software. Even the idea is pretty good. Take a bunch of computers and link them, and you have a massive storage farm.

Quote

The technology works by using a different way of keeping track of descriptive information--"metadata" such as physical locations, file sizes or access permissions--that accompanies the actual content within the files. Where most storage systems include this metadata in the storage system itself, Storage Tank spreads the information across a group of metadata servers, lower-end dual-processor Intel servers running Linux.
