Judge says MS charged too much for Windows

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 21, 2003 at 3:58:27 PM
If you bought Windows legally (all 20% of you), you might espect to get some cash from Microsoft in your future. It is there way of saying sorry we ripped you off. No hard feelings?

Quote

The ruling by San Francisco Superior Court Judge Paul Alvarado allows the settlement to proceed to the next step, during which consumers and corporations in the state will be notified that they may qualify for vouchers ranging in value from $5 to $29. The vouchers can be used to buy most hardware or software products from any manufacturer.

That is my motorcycle in case you are wondering, it is a Honda 1979 400CC. It runs like it was brand new (it better after a $300 tune up and fix up).

Macintosh G5

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on July 18, 2003 at 5:27:51 PM
The latest Mac features a full metal case with an air-flow system that Apple is very proud of. This case has a very neat'n'tidy look inside, giving great cooling without sacrificing your peace and quiet. See for yourself.

The part I'm very suspicious of is the fact that they don't give the full specs of the other systems they used to benchmark their "fastest pc ever" claim. And what about AMD? Yes, Pentium is more common, but there are Opteron workstations out there. Apple did not pioneer 64-bit processing and having up to 8GB of memory in a computer as they make it out to be. I don't believe that a G5 would be "twice as fast" as an Opteron workstation, like Apple claims their g5 beats the P4 by. I do believe they would match eachother, but the fact that they don't even compare themselves with the only workstation they should have, makes me wonder if their entire benchmarking process was faulty.

[QUOTE]The PowerPC G5 out-shoots the Pentium 4 in a battery of tests. But it’s in the rough-and-tumble of real-world performance that the G5 really comes into its own — shredding the PC’s reputation in the process.[/QUOTE:10585672

Senate denies funding to IT spying

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 18, 2003 at 3:42:30 PM
The TIA, Terrorism Information Awareness program, will have to find another source of income. The senate has denied to program funds. This is a score for privacy, and it proves that our legal system works! But also remember, that this is a blow to security. Comments?

Quote

The fate of the $54 million program will likely be determined in negotiations with the House of Representatives, which forbade the Pentagon from using the program on U.S. citizens without permission but did not cut off funding when it approved its version of the Pentagon's budget earlier this month.

Seasonic Super Silencer 400 PSU reaches 78% efficiency

Poster: SKELACCOUNT
Posted on July 18, 2003 at 6:02:34 AM
A comprehensive PSU review from Silent PC Review reveals Seasonic's new winner

It's evolutionary, but its performance is such that it almost seems revolutionary: A true 78% efficient PSU with Active PFC from Seasonic with extras at a modest $99. ATX12V v1.3 compliant, cool and quiet in real applications, and very powerful. The Seasonic Super Silencer 400 looks like a winner from every angle. And as usual SPCR examines it carefully from every angle.

ATI scores SGI

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 14, 2003 at 10:31:00 PM
SGI will be using ATI in their workstation computers. These systems cost a bunch more than normal desktops. You too can have one at a mere $45000.

Quote

The new Onyx4 UltimateVision system uses ATI workstation video cards instead of the SGI-designed graphics systems the company has relied on for years, said Shawn Underwood, marketing director for SGI's visual systems. The systems start at less than $45,000. But in high-end configurations with 64 of SGI's MIPS 16000A processors, they cost well over $300,000.

No RFID tags for Walmart

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 10, 2003 at 3:42:16 PM
Walmart has cancelled the trials of the RFID tags in their products. Walmart most likely backed down by pressure from privacy groups.

Quote

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology uses microchips to wirelessly transmit product serial numbers to a scanner without the need for human intervention. The technology is seen as an eventual successor to bar-code inventory tracking systems, promising to cut distribution costs for manufacturers and improve retailing margins.

Coming soon: Talkative computers

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2003 at 11:38:37 PM
Ever wanted to strike up a conversation with the box in your room? That's what talking to a computer is. What would be cool is if games had characters that interacted with you and talked back based on what you said and stuff.

Quote

The technical kinks, high costs and application misfires that have held back the acceptance of speech recognition and activation are being ironed out, they say. As a result, companies are coming out with a variety of products that will let consumers access databases using voice commands, for example, or transform e-mails into one- or two-way verbal exchanges.

New Intel chips soon

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2003 at 11:36:23 PM
You know that Prescott is coming out this year just to make my 2.4C obselete even faster. They are also releasing new mobile chips and more. Price cuts are also in the works.

Quote

Prescott, which will come out in the fourth quarter, will contain a number of enhancements over the current Pentium 4, including new instructions for multimedia processing and a 1MB cache, a pool of memory on the chip for fast data access. Current Pentium 4s have a 512KB cache.
