My email kind of died today due to a server log getting way too large... too many requests Smile.

It is working fine now, so normal news will resume again tomorrow.

Nivram just posted one of the first heatsink reviews here on ASE Labs. We also got a chance to test some good thermal paste from the same company.

Let's see how this AMD Athlon heatsink performs
. Remember to keep watching this area for more good reviews and articles soon!

Comcast to raise the cap

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 6, 2003 at 2:38:32 PM
Comcast is testing raising the download cap to 3mbps. The article cites Cablevision's service, but what they forget is that when @Home was still around, downloads were always 3mbps. The costs for Comcast are extremely high, the mail servers go down often. Why am I paying over $40 per month?

Quote

The new 30-day trial will begin Thursday in Pittsburgh for subscribers who pay $42.95 a month on top of basic cable TV service. A separate 3mbps test is already under way in Knoxville, Tenn. A company representative would not comment on whether Comcast plans to eventually offer 3mbps service to all of its subscribers.

AMD gains marketshare

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 4, 2003 at 5:05:27 PM
AMD has eaten away at Intel's market share very, very slightly. One tenth of a percent to be exact. Hey, gaining, is gaining.

Quote

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD saw its market share in the second quarter of 2003 inch up to 15.7 percent, a tenth-of-a-point increase from the same period a year ago, according to statistics compiled by Mercury Research. Intel, meanwhile, saw its market share slip to 82.5 percent in the second quarter, from 82.8 percent in the same period the year before. Other manufacturers, a grouping that includes Transmeta, increased their collective market share from 1.7 percent to 1.8 percent.

Boeing Supports WiFi

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on August 2, 2003 at 9:21:43 AM
The airplane manufacturer Boeing has been developing WiFi in their airplanes for public and other use for quite sometime, while under constant attack from groups claiming it will cause security risks. We'll have to see how the FAA feels.

Quote

The unit at Boeing responsible for developing in-flight Wi-Fi equipment has defended itself in the face of comments that such airborne wireless connectivity will be insecure.

AthlonMP and Opteron Price Cuts

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on August 2, 2003 at 9:17:19 AM
If you were waiting for price cuts to build that dual processor system, nows your time. Cuts as much as 34% on some of them.

[QUOTE]Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), in response to Intel’s processor price cuts in mid-July, has also lowered its workstation CPU prices. The largest price cut was on its Opteron 242 processor, whose price fell from US$690 to US$455, a 34% decrease.[/QUOTE

Whoa there RIAA

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 1, 2003 at 7:34:39 PM
The Senate dept that handles investigations has sent a letter to the RIAA asking what and how they are targeting people with subpoenas. The Senate feels that the RIAA is doing a bit too much snooping.

Quote

The RIAA is in the midst of an unprecedented legal campaign ultimately aimed at filing what could be thousands of copyright-infringement lawsuits against individual file-swappers who are accused of offering copyrighted songs over networks such as Kazaa. The group is sending out close to 300 subpoenas a week to Internet service providers and colleges in pursuit of the identities of file-swappers, according to the federal court in Washington, D.C., that is serving as a clearinghouse for the requests.

Would you like WiFi with that?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 30, 2003 at 4:16:58 PM
McDonald's is stepping up its WiFi trials. Now to me, I can't see lugging in my laptop to a McD's and eating some greesy burger and messing up my laptop trying to see the web.

Quote

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company announced late Tuesday that 75 of its fast-food restaurants in the New York Tri-State area will be covered by a high-speed wireless network with access to the Internet. The trial, a partnership with Cometa, extends an earlier, smaller pilot in the New York area with the wholesale network operator.

This is the type of game that all other space shooters should be based on

More IPv6 woes

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 28, 2003 at 4:20:10 PM
The good old USA doesn't feel that we need to move over to IPv6 anytime soon, and they are correct in thinking so. This country owns around 70 percent of the IP addresses in the IPv4 space. Other countries want to move fast to get everything upgraded to IPv6.

Quote

IPv6 addresses are 132 bits. The resulting list of IP addresses is two googols long, an enormous number. If you want to write it, it is a "3" followed by 38 zeroes. "It's a nearly infinite address space," said Cisco Systems Vice President Sangeeta Anand.

SCO Sucks

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 28, 2003 at 4:13:11 PM
It really pains me to think what good came come out of SCO throwing all these allegations around. I hope they don't think they are helping the Open Source movement. Look at this quote.

Quote

SCO, unsurprisingly, disagrees with this assessment. "We're not attempting to extort funds out of users. We're only trying to be compensated for the use of our software in Linux," company spokesman Blake Stowell said Friday. "We have been substantiating our claims, because we showed our Unix source code in Linux to more than five-dozen people, and we're willing to show it to individuals in the future."

What a load of BS.
