Athlon 64 3200+ Retail

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 5, 2003 at 5:04:16 AM
I just wanted to report that the Athlon 64 has hit retail shelves pretty quickly. They are on the shelves at CompUSA for around $600, along with the MSI K8T for $200.

AMD really went straight to release with this new CPU, and I for one thank them for not making another paper release.

DRAM market stabilizing

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 3, 2003 at 5:03:56 PM
Still, the DRAM market is cautionous of the market, but stability is coming. Spot prices have been pretty steady.

Quote

After dropping quickly in the second quarter, DRAM prices stabilized in the third quarter, iSuppli said. Average prices for bare DRAM chips, which are purchased and assembled into modules for use in computers, rose 20 percent from $4.42 to $5.30 in the third quarter.

Comcast Raises the Bar

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 3, 2003 at 1:21:01 AM
The speed from Comcast's internet service will be raised to 3mbps. Sucks that it is still higher than DSL (pricewise).

Quote

The Philadelphia-based cable company said on Thursday it will boost its maximum download speed of its Comcast Online service from 1.5 megabits per second (mbps) to 3mbps, at no additional charge to customers. It said it will introduce the increases in 14 U.S. markets at first, but added that the "majority" of its broadband subscribers nationwide will be upgraded by the end of the year.

Kazaa sues record labels

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 25, 2003 at 2:05:27 PM
This would have to be a revenge suit. Sharman, the company behind Kazaa, is saying that the music industry illegally use modified version of its software to find users.

Quote

Sharman's lawsuit also revives its previous allegation that the entertainment companies violated antitrust laws by stopping Sharman and its partner from distributing authorized copies of music and movies through Kazaa.

Seagate ships Lindows on hard drives

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 24, 2003 at 2:47:57 PM
Soon you'll be to buy Seagate hard drive preinstalled with Lindows. This agreement is good for people that don't want the hassle of installing an OS. And good for people who want to get into Linux.

Quote

Simply plugging in the LindowsHD and starting the computer up will auto-recognize all of the internal components in virtually all Intel-compatible computers (video card, ethernet card, sound card, etc.) with no user intervention or custom installation. This would not be possible with most other operating systems because they require installation CDs to tailor the software for each particular configuration. If you've ever changed a part in your Microsoft Windows computer and had the software nag you to go find the installation CDs before it will work again, you have witnessed what I'm talking about.

Happy Birthday ASE!!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 21, 2003 at 2:47:56 PM
Yes, today is the day that ASE turns 2 years of age! We have come a long way since the beginning. Noticably, more and more articles and reviews are coming out than ever before.

It is finally good to have a bunch of people in the forums, so get in there and start posting. Also, we have a hat contest running now, get in on that and I'll throw some hardware or games in as well!

Version 3 is on the way, for a taste of things to come, Check it out. The first site to use Version 3 code will be coming very soon!

Here's to more great times. Thanks everyone who made this possible, including mostly you, the reader! Thank you very much.

Verisign sued over DNS crap

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 19, 2003 at 4:57:38 PM
If you have been surfing the net for the past week or so, you may have already encountered Verisign's new campaign of trying to sell you domain names if you get a DNS lookup failure. Now they're being sued.

Quote

Not only is VeriSign making money off the redirected searches, but it is improperly interfering with competing services, including Netster's SmartBrowse and similar services run by Internet service providers like AOL Time Warner's America Online and Microsoft, Popular Enterprises said.

Intel Boosts Pentium 4 cache to 2MB!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 17, 2003 at 2:46:54 PM
Wow, this is an amazing boost of cache for the CPU. I wonder how they will perform. The longer pipeline that the P4 carriers coupled with the bigger cache should improve performance by a good amount I'm sure. Intel is also trying to secure the desktop platform from the Hammer of AMD.

Quote

The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition will run at 3.2GHz and come with 2MB of level-three cache, said Louis Burns, executive vice president of the desktop platform group at Intel. Current Pentium 4 chips come with a 512KB secondary cache and no level-three cache. Increasing caches, reservoirs of memory located on the processor, typically boost performance.
