Zune Doesn't Plays For Sure

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 7, 2006 at 3:13:09 PM
The new music service from Microsoft will not be compatible with its own music player. Plays For Sure? I doubt that. When Microsoft disregards its own device in favor of increased DRM, there's something wrong. Well, Microsoft is wrong... again.

Quote

The problem has arisen because tracks from the MSN Music site are compatible with the specifications of the Plays For Sure initiative. This was intended to re-assure consumers as it guaranteed that music bought from services backing it would work with players that supported it. MSN Music, Napster, AOL Music Now and Urge all backed Plays For Sure as did many players from hardware makers such as Archos, Creative, Dell and Iriver. In a statement a Microsoft spokesperson said: "Since Zune is a separate offering that is not part of the Plays For Sure ecosystem, Zune content is not supported on Plays For Sure devices."

Piracy Statistic Are BS

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 7, 2006 at 2:53:53 PM
When you read article after article about how piracy is not what companies tell you, you have to wonder why we need these crazy IP laws.

Quote

The most recent locally commissioned study was in the late 1990s, Mr Macnamara said. Many copyright holders claimed links between piracy and organised crime, but AIC researcher had found nothing to support that view. "Either there is no evidence of any links between piracy and organised crime or it is simply beyond the capacity of rights holders to identify these links," he wrote, adding that he was concerned about the way piracy figures were being used.

NTP Sues Palm

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 7, 2006 at 2:48:52 PM
NTP... you remember that one. They sued RIM over the same issue. Does anyone think that a patent company is good? Screw them.

Quote

The suit, filed in Virginia on Monday, seeks cash compensation. Donald Stout, co-founder of closely held NTP, said in a statement that the company sued after licensing talks failed. Palm shares tumbled following the announcement. The lawsuit may prove expensive and time-consuming for Palm management, based on the BlackBerry litigation. NTP sued RIM in 2001, claiming the BlackBerry e-mail devices infringed on NTP patents. After a trial, appeals and a failed initial settlement, the case was finally resolved in March when RIM agreed to pay NTP.

US Lags On IPv6

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 6, 2006 at 4:03:39 PM
And the industry says "no duh!" US adoption is very low because of things that prolong the use of IPv4 such as NAT and such. Plus the US has a bunch of the address space.

Quote

Today there is room for about 4.3 billion Web addresses. About 1.2 billion of them are controlled by users in the United States. In the new scheme, Web addresses will be made up of 128 bits of information, unlike the 32 bits used today, and a vastly greater number of addresses will be available. As all - and I mean all - communications begin to take advantage of Internet technology, these improvements will have a fundamental impact on our ability to get things done in society. Every cellphone could have a unique Web address, for instance. More importantly, v6, as it's known among the experts, will allow us to do things we simply haven't imagined before. Because it can assign a unique Internet address to anything electronic, it can tie in sensors in our homes, vehicles and even under our skin.

Yeah, I don't need to be wired to everything, thanks. I like my privacy.

Political Ads Sucks

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 6, 2006 at 2:51:46 PM
I'm sick of these stupid political ads that ATTACK the other person. Why do you think people are sick of seeing them? I want to see what YOU'RE going todo, not what the OTHER person did.

Quote

But some experts think political advertisers should at least be thinking about the power of the fast-forward button. "In general, advertisers have started to be concerned as adoption of DVRs increases," said Bruce McGregor, a senior digital home services analyst at Current Analysis. "Election ads would fall into that category if (voters have) seen the same political ads the last month and want to fast-forward through them." Ditty is hardly alone, of course, in his bid to skip through what he sees as a worsening environment of negative political ad campaigning, even while continuing to watch a significant amount of television.

Vista Gets Official Release Dates

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 2, 2006 at 4:37:01 PM
Now you'll know when not to purchase Vista. The business variants will debut on November 30th. Office 2007 will be release at the same time.

Quote

Five years, three months and five days after Windows XP made its debut, Microsoft will usher its next-generation OS onto the stage.
APC has been advised by a very well placed source that January 30, 2007 is about to be announced as the official release date for Vista. In addition, in a move that mirrors previous side-by-side launches of Microsoft's OS and Office suite (in the 95 and XP waves), Office 2007 will also touch down on that day. However, as previously planned, Vista and Office 2007 will first step out for a 'business launch' on November 30 (alongside Exchange 2007). From that date, the programs will be available to corporate customers who hold an enterprise licence or software assurance deal with Microsoft.

Microsoft May Pull Out Of China

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 2, 2006 at 4:29:43 PM
This looks like a threat from Microsoft. Not that China is great or anything. On the surface it seems like a fine idea. Do not support terrible countries.

Quote

Fred Tipson, senior policy counsel for the computer giant, said concerns over the repressive regime might force it to reconsider its business in China. "Things are getting bad... and perhaps we have to look again at our presence there," he told a conference in Athens. "We have to decide if the persecuting of bloggers reaches a point that it's unacceptable to do business there." "We try to define those levels and the trends are not good there at the moment. It's a moving target."

It still smells like a threat to get China to curb piracy. I hope it backfires and Mac or Linux becomes to force in China.

DoS Bug Found In Firefox 2

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 1, 2006 at 10:22:41 PM
Another security flaw has been found in Firefox 2. Even though there may be bugs, Mozilla should be quick to patch the browser. Unlike waiting till "patch Tuesday" like some other company...

Quote

The vulnerability lies in the way the open-source browser handles JavaScript code. Viewing a rigged Web page will cause the browser to exit, a representative for Mozilla, the publisher of the software, said Wednesday. Contrary to claims on security mailing lists, the bug cannot be exploited to run arbitrary code on a PC running Firefox 2, the representative said. This flaw in the JavaScript Range object is different from the denial-of-service vulnerability in Firefox 2 that was confirmed by Mozilla last week. That bug is related to a more serious security hole, which was fixed in earlier versions of Firefox, the organization has said.

Windows CE 6 Released With FULL Kernel Source

Poster: Aron Schatz

I'm interested to hear what free|zombie has to say about this move. Is this a sign of change for Microsoft. I am certainly hoping the market will not accept draconian Microsoft style software. At least with the software being open, it can be checked and fully supported.

Quote

Underlining the significance of Windows CE to Microsoft's overall business plans, chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie (pictured above) delivered the keynote address at the CE 6.0 launch event, which was streamed over the web from Microsoft's website and attended by some 60 media representatives. Microsoft characterizes Windows CE -- released at version 1.0 ten years ago this month -- as an embedded, real-time operating system aimed at a wide variety of application-specific systems and devices, including consumer electronics, industrial automation, and medical and scientific equipment.

English Is Good Enough

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 1, 2006 at 2:52:01 PM
The UN is doing their best to screw over a working system. English has 26 letters and 10 numbers. How many chars do these other crazy languages have?

Quote

A November 1983 specification proposed that domain names would have "only letters, digits and hyphen"--which meant that alphabets in Cyrillic, Arabic, Kanji, or Chinese sinographs could not be used in domains. Not even diacritical marks employed in German, French and Spanish were permitted. On Wednesday, delegates to a United Nations summit here complained that the ASCII-only choice was representative of an Internet culture that was far too English-centric and failed to respect other languages.

Quote

The search capabilities of Windows Media Player 11 also enable consumers to easily scroll through and access music faster than on any other media player, whether the library contains 50 or 50,000 tracks. The powerful Instant Search in Windows Media Player 11 provides results that instantly narrow with each keystroke, whether the consumer is searching in a personal library or browsing URGE. Innovative drag-and-drop capabilities make building playlists and moving music to portable players easier than ever.

Windows ICS Attack Can Bring Down Firewall

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 31, 2006 at 3:01:48 PM
This is not that big of a deal for most people, but if you are running internet connection sharing it may be. Move to a router.

Quote

The code, which was posted on the Internet early Sunday morning, could be used to disable the Windows Firewall on a fully patched Windows XP PC that was running Windows' Internet Connection Service (ICS). This service allows Windows users to essentially turn their PC into a router and share their Internet connection with other computers on the local area network (LAN.) It is typically used by home and small-business users. The attacker could send a malicious data packet to another PC using ICS that would cause the service to terminate. Because this service is connected to the Windows firewall, this packet would also cause the firewall to stop working, said Tyler Reguly, a research engineer at nCircle Network Security Inc., who has blogged about the issue.

Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard @ ASE Labs.

Quote

Many companies could not care less about what their customer base has to say about certain products. Thankfully, Logitech does not fit into this mold like Microsoft does. When I informed some people I know about the G15 keyboard, the initial reaction was the uselessness of the LCD. Many of them wanted the extra programmable keys which would be a huge timesaver for many people. The LCD was the sticking point. It seems as though Logitech has heard some of the cries of users and released the G11. What is it? It is the G15 without the LCD. If you already read through my G15 review, skip the LCD section and you have read this.

TTIC NPH AM2 - Compact Heat Column CPU Cooler Review @ Madshrimps

This low cost heat column powered heatsink from TTIC fits AMD AM2/S939 without much hassle. Its compact size and light weight might discourage you at first sight, but do not let looks deceive you, the NPH AM2 is quite a capable heatsink.

Jetart CK5000 RAM Heatsinks @ Bjorn3D

Quote

Once upon a time not long ago, the computer had only one heatsink dwelling deep inside its case. Some readers might remember the good old days when the most you had to worry about for system cooling was getting a heatsink with a fan that actually worked. Then as systems improved, so did system cooling with it. Before long, case fans were added, and even the motherboard chipset came equipped with a heatsink. As progression would dictate, it wouldn't take but a few moments in time before there was a heatsink on everything that produced heat; including the system and video RAM.

Cyber Snipa 2 Gaming Pad Review @ MODTHEBOX.COM

Quote

The Cyber Snipa 2 is quite compact for the number of buttons it gives you. It has a quality feel to it; to put this observation into perspective, it weighs as much as low cost full sized keyboards at a fraction of the size. There is a key on the Cyber Snipa 2 to fill the needs of any possible FPS game bind and the wrist wrest is thin but comfortable.

Review: ThermalTake Mozart Tx Case @ GideonTech.com

Quote

Fresh from Thermaltake, let me introduce the new Mozart TX Case. This is not a standard case, in fact, it is larger than any case I have used at home to date. Not only is it very tall, but it is cube style and thus much wider than a standard case. Also available are four expansion kits which can turn it into a full blown media center.

News - ECS P965T-A at Overclockers Online

Quote

The ECS P965T-A is a solid board on what is now arguably the fastest platform for near any task, provided you've got the right CPU of course. ECS has given this board a lot to make it appealing to your average user, but has also left a lot out that would have otherwise made it a real winner for the enthusiast. The board has been incredibly stable and performs well, but until something more is done to this boards BIOS what you see is what you get.

ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256 MB @ techPowerUp!

Quote

ATI's new X1900 XT 256 MB is designed to fit into the price range that is bound by the X1900 GT on the lower end and the X1900 XT 512 MB on the upper end. In order to bring the card's price down ATI chose to reduce the total memory size from 512 MB to 256 MB. Also a bit slower memory is used. We test how big the performance difference to the more expensive X1900 XTX with 512 MB is.

Scythe Ninja Plus Rev. B Cooler @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

As many of you will have picked up due to its name, this cooler is not, strictly speaking, a new cooler by Scythe. It is actually an improvement on a modern day classic. The Ninja Plus B is basically the same as the Ninja and Ninja Plus updated with support for AMD's recently released socket, the AM2. The Ninja Plus really tamed the AMD socket 939 and socket T (Intel 775) processors so we assume the Plus B wont have any problems with the much cooler running AM2 processors. Let's see how well it does against the top two air-cooling kings of Pro-Clockers!

Foxconn 975X7AB-8EKRS2H Review @ Ninjalane

Quote

The layout of this motherboard is very well designed with quite a bit of detail given to making room for two monster video cards. Razer Tarantula Gaming Keyboard Review at XYZ Computing

Quote

The Tarantula is what Razer calls the first definitive keyboard created by gamers for gamers. Though is not close to being the first keyboard designed for gaming, it will be interesting to see what Razer was able to do in order to optimize their keyboard for competition. Based on their experience with mice, the Tarantula is definitely something to keep an eye on if you don't think a standard keyboard offers all the gaming features you would like. Right now there is considerable competition in the input device market, especially by companies looking to get as much money as they can out of demanding consumers. No one is more demanding of their equipment than gamers, but just piling on extra features is not enough to make a successful product. It will be interesting to see how well Razer was able to balance ease of use with innovation.

Their new CNPS9700 LED cooler is the real deal. It's got performance, even easier installation and virtually universal compatibility. With outstanding fit and finish, a big aggressive presence and the blue LED fan, it also has great looks and would be an excellent upgrade for the stock cooler. The design could result in lower case temperatures as well, providing there's an exhaust fan in the vicinity. Overclockers can have some fun with this cooler, and in silent mode, the quiet computing crowd will be very happy as well.

PowerColor X1950 PRO @ Bjorn3D

Quote

Beginning of 2006 until now was all about 90 nm chips. Just recently ATI released their first .08µ chips codenamed R580+ (Don't get fooled though; R580 is X1900 XT, meaning it's been out but manufactured using 90 nm process, the plus sign is my own remark to distinguish the two) and RV535 (X1650). Throughout this year the company brought us many interesting products with phenomenal performance / price ratio: X1650 PRO, X1900 GT, X1800 GTO to name a few. Die shrink to 80 nm was just an experiment before ATI rolls out the big (small) guns based on 65 nm silicon. On October 17th ATI had released RV570, X1950 PRO also based on 80 nm process. The chip itself brings nothing new as it's heavily based on R580+. To be frank it's basically X1900 GT with faster clocks, internal Crossfire support and cheaper price tag.

Sapphire Radeon X1300 XT OC Edition @ techPowerUp!

Quote

The new ATI Radeon X1300 XT is based on the RV530 GPU core which is used on the X1600 series. That alone should bring quite a nice performance boost. On top of that Sapphire has added GDDR3 memory and a healthy clock increase. There is no need to run an overclocking software on your system, the increased clocks are stored in the BIOS. In our testing we saw a huge performance difference to the X1300 and almost no difference to the X1600 series.

SteelSound 5H V2 Reviewed at BurnOutPC.com

Overall the improvements made to the 5H are quiet all right. They made the padding thicker which makes them a lot more comfortable, so that's a good thing. Technical wise they are just as good as the 5H, but I find these a lot more comfortable. Overall a job well done.

Another IE7 Flaw

Here is another IE7 flaw that enables a phishing attack. The error stems from a trusted source. Not to trusted, is it?

Quote

The browser flaw could affect users who visit a trusted site by opening a pop-up window in that site but containing malicious code. This is the second IE 7 flaw that has been discovered since Microsoft released the browser two weeks ago. Last week, a security flaw was discovered in IE 7 that could spoof the address of a pop-up window. The two IE 7 flaws, if used in conjunction with each other, can easily dupe all but the most security-minded users, said Thomas Kristensen, chief technology officer of security company Secunia, which discovered the flaws.

Notebook Batteries In Short Supply

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 30, 2006 at 3:21:55 PM
This season may be light in Notebook sales due to a shortage in batteries. Get your laptop now. By the way, the difference between the original Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo is slim.

Quote

Some in the PC industry are shrugging off any notion of shortages, and others are remaining tight-lipped about the impact of the recall on their supply. Some even suggest that Compal might just be trying to use the situation to negotiate favorable pricing. But if there is an impact, analysts say the fourth quarter could shape up as a typical case of the haves versus the have-nots. "You don't want to have a situation where you can't sell a $1,400 notebook because you don't have a $25 battery," said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates. "But if this plays out in the usual way, the big guys will get what they need, and the little guys will get screwed."

UN Wants Control Over Internet

Poster: Aron Schatz

Sorry UN, you suck. The US will remain in 'control' over the DNS system. As you may not be aware, the root servers are located in other countries besides the USA.

Quote

The official purpose of the Internet Governance Forum, which was created at a similar U.N. event last year in Tunisia and is scheduled to convene annually for five years, is to discuss everything from domain names to spam and security. But many critics of the United States hope that the forum will contain the seeds to an organization to supplant ICANN, perhaps organized under the auspices of the United Nations. Even though the U.S. has the most sophisticated Internet infrastructure, last year's meeting was held in Tunisia and this year's in Greece. Not one meeting is scheduled to be held in North America, though Brazil, India, and Egypt have announced their plans to host future ones. In addition, no U.S. government representative spoke during opening ceremonies.

STEREO Probes Launch

NASA has successfully launched the twin probes to study the sun. Images should be returning by the end of this year. I'm glad that we'll be getting some great images - just like SOHO in the past.

Quote

"We are at the dawning of a new age of solar observations," Russ Howard of the US Naval Research Laboratory said at a NASA news conference on Tuesday. "We're going to be viewing things in a new dimension for us." Howard said STEREO would have an unprecedented "broadside" view of the entire relationship between the Sun and the Earth. Scientists hope the mission will glean insight into solar activities such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), the most violent explosions in the solar system.

Adia Raising Lab Diamond Standard

Screw DeBeers and the diamond cartel. Lab diamonds are flawless and created for cheap.

Quote

Adia Diamonds, a joint venture between Michigan-based Pearlman's Jewelers and Ontario-based Advanced Optical Technologies Corporation, is the first company to offer laboratory-grown colorless and fancy blue diamonds for the luxury jewelry market. Adia diamonds are created using technologically advanced processes, replicating conditions in which naturally occurring diamonds are formed. "Adia diamonds are superior in quality and size to any lab-created diamonds on the market today," said, 30-year industry veteran, Bill Pearlman, president of Pearlman's Jewelers. "In fact, other than not coming out of a mine, they're identical to natural diamonds in every way." Except in price. Laboratory-created Adia diamonds cost a fraction of the price of natural colored stones.

AMD Struggles To Meet Demand

Poster: Aron Schatz

AMD has some good problems. It is good to have high demand. On the other hand, AMD also hasn't moved to 65nm chip technology and hasn't totally moved to 300mm wafers. Those costs really eat alot.

AMD's 90-nanometer dual-core Opteron and Athlon 64 processors have a die size of 199 millimeters squared. By chip design standards, that's considered a little large, McCarron said. When AMD starts making dual-core Opterons on its 65-nanometer manufacturing technology, that die size is expected to go down to something a little more comfortable that will allow AMD to produce more chips per wafer. An AMD representative declined to comment on the die size for its first 65-nanometer products. On a conference call following AMD's earnings results last week, Chief Financial Officer Bob Rivet noted that the company would see a cost benefit from its move to 65-nanometer processors in the fourth quarter, since the cost of building the wafer can be spread over more chips. He also pointed out that AMD still hasn't made the full transition to 300-millimeter-wide wafers from 200-millimeter wafers. Obviously, the larger the wafer, the more chips that can be cut from that wafer, and--not counting the one-time expense of purchasing 300-millimeter equipment--the extra costs of the larger wafer are negligible.

Vista 64-bit Kernel Locked Down

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 25, 2006 at 2:13:22 PM
Say goodbye to developers doing third party patching and indie drivers for things. Vista DRM will lock unsigned code from running in kernel space. On the surface it seems like a good idea until you figure out that it is Microsoft, not you, that controls what gets to run.

Quote

There's going to be a kybosh on naughty developers mucking about with the 64-bit kernel; patching will be banned. McAfee and others seem to have already learned of the new deal at Microsoft. Speaking at the RSA Europe conference in Nice, Microsoft security technology unit corporate VP Ben Fathi said the 64-bit kernel will be a "black box". He compared developers insisting on the ability to patch the code to a Sony Walkman user invalidating their warranty by opening up the device. He said: "It's just not the way the box was designed...we're putting a stop to that." Fathi conceeded for 32-bit systems the firm will never have the amount of control over security. He said: "That train has left the station."

I love that line. I can buy Windows and not tinker with it? Well, screw you Microsoft.

SGI Sues ATI

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 25, 2006 at 1:31:24 PM
SGI is suing ATI for patent infringement. More icing on the cake for this patent BS. Our patent system and copyright system are messed up. Time for a change.

Quote

A day after it returned to NASDAQ (under a new stock ticker) SGI has filed suit against ATI claiming patent infringement. SGI claims ATI violated patent number 6,650,327, "Display system having floating point rasterization and floating point framebuffering", which was filed in 1998 and granted in 2003, in its Radeon graphics cards. The patent allows software to operate directly on data in a frame buffer and, in a statement, McKenna described it as "an important resource in achieving enhanced graphics processing demanded by today's computer systems".

Lik-Sang Out Of Business

Poster: Aron Schatz

An end of an era due to Sony's strongarm. Lik-Sang gave up and threw in the towel.

Quote

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore, Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund any store credits held by the company, and the customer support department is taking care of any open transactions such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal.

I just posted a new article on how to setup a Cisco router for a home based internet connection. The article goes over NAT/PAT and DHCP. Good information in there.

Imagine that you have a Cisco router running IOS but don't know the first thing about how to use it as a home router. Stop imagining because there are many people that are in the same situation. This guide will help you through it.

Apack Zerotherm GX710 Copper Videocard VGA Cooler Review @ Tweaknews.net

Quote

The ZEROtherm GX710 is a good VGA cooling solution from a new player in this market. A tie, however, is rarely satisfying in this business. As I mentioned earlier, the GX710 is almost surely going to be more expensive that the GX700 and, being a bit heavier, doesn't have much to recommend it over the 700.

Cooler Master Hyper TX Socket 775 CPU Cooler Review @ Bigbruin.com

Quote

Quote: The Cooler Master Hyper TX offers just about everything you would want in a processor cooler; easy installation, minimal noise, respectable cooling performance, and the secondary benefit of cooling motherboard components near the processor... Despite the compact size and light weight of the Hyper TX, it did quite well when it came to thermal testing.

KuFormula VF1 Plus VGA Cooler @ Bjorn3D

Quote

In this review I will utilize the KuFormula VF1 Plus VGA cooler to tame the burning desire my video card has to combust into flames. While there are at least dozens of various aftermarket VGA cooling solutions available at the time of this writing, it seems Sytrin has introduced something that stands out as unique and different in a sea of similarity. Using copper-based heatsink with dual heatpipes, the KuFormula VF1 is a formidable cooling solution on its own, add to it the radial fan system and anodized aluminum RAM heatsinks, and you have yourself one superior package for your VGA space heater.

As always Logitech does everything with style and for a reasons. The Logitech G11 is the newest gaming keyboard from Logitech and it is no exception to their rule. The color scheme is perfect, key layout is dead on and the G Series keys on the board will be just what gamers will want.

Vantec Iceberq6 VGA Cooler @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

With all the advancements in computer technology over the years, computer components are running hotter and hotter requiring higher performance (louder) cooling solutions to keep the heat monster at bay. This seems to be more of a problem with today's performance video cards where video card vendors are out fitting their cards with cooling solutions that will rival your home vacuum cleaner in the noise department.

[Phoronix] Intel GMA 3000 Q965 Graphics Performance

Quote

In August Intel had announced their new Linux graphics driver website as well as announcing the immediate availability of open-source display drivers for the 965 Express Chipset. This Chipset offers fourth-generation Intel graphics architectures in the form of the GMA 3000 and GMA X3000. Here at Phoronix we have run some tests on the Q965 Chipset and GMA 3000 graphics with their open-source drivers, and have our results to share today under GNU/Linux. We had also compared Intel's open-source graphics performance against the open-source R300 DRI drivers.

The PC2-6400 modules did well in testing, and the lower timings (4-4-4-12) helped this 2GB kit beat out another kit with more standard, 5-5-5-15 timings.

Two New Sockets For Nehalem In 2008

Quote

Intel is going to implement 2 new sockets for the next generation Nehalem architecture in 2008 and they are Socket B and Socket H. As we know, Nehalem is 45nm based and we are going to see some exciting changes such as IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) and CSI. Socket B will be LGA1366 and Socket H will be LGA715. The reason why Socket B has so many more contact pads is pretty obvious.

Thermaltake Toughpower W0116RU Cable Management 750W Power Supply Review @ Tweaknews.net

This PSU should prove to be a worthy addition to the very competent Toughpower line. The stability was impressive and the modular cables not only performed admirably, but look very good in their sleeving. Outstanding stability and a rich feature set like this, however, doesn't come cheap.

Abit AW9D Max Motherboard @ Pro-Clockers

Quote

The AW9D-Max is Abit's second motherboard to date that supports the Core 2 Duo. The first was the AB9 which is based on the Intel P965 chipset. But their top dawg is the AW9D-Max. Powercolor X1650 Pro @ techPowerUp!

Quote

ATI's Radeon X1650 was introduced with the X1950 XTX and the X1300 XT. Just what is this card? As the name suggests, it is a little step up from the X1600 XT. With the same amount of pipelines, and slightly higher clocks, is there anything to look forward to with the X1650 Pro? No doubt, this card at least runs cooler - insured by a smaller manufacturing process. Does it bring balanced performance at a fair price? How does it fair compared to the X1300 XT? Most importantly, is it worth buying?

WoW: Burning Crusade Delayed Till Jan 2007

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 24, 2006 at 2:02:18 PM
This news sucks for all the people that have no life playing WoW. You won't get BC before 2007. Now you may actually have to see family on the holidays this year.

Quote

IRVINE, Calif. -- Blizzard Entertainment today announced that the release date for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, the highly anticipated expansion for World of Warcraft, will be in January 2007. By adding a few extra weeks to the development cycle beyond its original target date, Blizzard will be able to extend the closed beta test and further refine the new content that will ship with the game.

"We appreciate the enthusiasm surrounding World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, and we're excited about putting the finishing touches on all of the new content," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We feel confident that the extra time spent polishing the game will result in the high-quality experience that our players expect and deserve."

Blizzard began the closed-beta phase of testing on World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade earlier this month. The January 2007 release window will allow extra time for current beta testers to participate in the final stages of development and continue providing valuable feedback.

Further information on specific worldwide release dates, pricing, and other details will be announced in the near future.

Oracle Makes Friends, Not Purchases

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 23, 2006 at 2:09:54 PM
Unlike Microsoft, Oracle is making partnerships for its business. Oracle wants to have an entire stack for its database.

Quote

Oracle likely still has more acquisitions ahead of it--with people speculating that it could buy business intelligence or open-source companies--but analysts expect the deals to be smaller than the blockbuster Peoplesoft and Siebel deals. Instead of pulling out its checkbook to boost revenue, Oracle is increasingly turning to partners, according to company executives and analysts.

Stallman Too Pigheaded For GPL?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 23, 2006 at 1:35:16 PM
I seem to read all these articles saying how Stallman will fragment the open source community. There are two conflicting ideas. Free software and open source. It is a large debate.

Quote

But while Torvalds has been enshrined as the Linux movement's creator, a lesser-known programmer--infamously more obstinate and far more eccentric than Torvalds--wields a startling amount of control as this revolution's resident enforcer. Richard M. Stallman is a 53-year-old anticorporate crusader who has argued for 20 years that most software should be free of charge. He and a band of anarchist acolytes long have waged war on the commercial software industry, dubbing tech giants "evil" and "enemies of freedom" because they rake in sales and enforce patents and copyrights--when he argues they should be giving it all away.
