Digit Adds Games Industry Tech Veteran Dominique Boutin as CTO
DUBLIN, February 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Seamlessly cross platform games developer adds technical heavyweight to senior team
Digit Game Studios, Ireland's largest games developer, has added Dominque Boutin to
the team as their new CTO. Dominque was previously the Technical Director for Bigpoint, a
world leading authority in online games, and has a wealth of experience in building and
leading technology teams.
"We're very excited to be welcoming Dominique to Digit. His technical skills,
experience and passion To achieve our ambitious plans and change the way people play
games, we knew we needed someone with the experience and technical skills that Dominique
brings to the team," said Richard Barnwell, CEO at Digit.
Dominique took the time to answer a few questions:
What attracted you to Digit?
I am very excited to be joining Digit as creating engaging cross platform experiences
is something I've wanted to do for a while now. I love the spirit and attitude of the team
which is also reflected in the incubator program that Digit is providing to the Irish
independent gamedev scene.
What is seamlessly cross platform?
With seamlessly cross-platform we mean playing in the same virtual world and with the
same people across all devices and distribution channels. Jump into our game on the way to
the office, during a work break at the desktop or during a relaxed session on the couch:
owning multiple devices with different form-factors has become affordable and is starting
to be an integral part of people's lifestyles. We believe that an engaging game experience
can be made ubiquitous similar to other online services that we are used to consuming
everywhere like e-mail, search and social feeds.
How do you see the games scene changing in 2013?
There will be a significant increase in games for OSX, Linux and Flash3D due to Steam
for Linux, the OSX App Store, Unity's increased cross-platform support and the recent drop
of Adobe's premium feature rev-share model for Flash. The diversity of devices and digital
channels is increasing even further and we'll probably have disruptions in consoles
through open android-based platforms like Ouya, GameStick and especially NVIDIA's Project
Shield. Some companies will focus on providing content only for few key markets having
highest ROI but others will go cross channel and cross device.
Therefore for traditional publishers their own digital platforms become an essential
asset not only for distribution but also for driving customer relations and therefore
retention. To extend the life cycle of games we used modding, multiplayer, DLC and online
communities. Nowadays very frequent updates are expected by players on mobiles and browser
games and that will soon push all digitally distributed games to become online services.
The definition of social in games is going to be broader again and will include more
traditional elements like clan management. Finally Free2Play is mainstream but there will
be more exploration and promotion around non-pay-to-win monetization mechanics.

Gigamon deploys highly port-dense 1Gb, 10Gb, 40Gb and 100Gb solutions, facilitating connections with all processing taking place over the built-in backplane. This design allows for enhanced tool integration features, filtering and load balancing across tool ports. The GigaPORT-Q08 40Gb line card further enhances Gigamon's carrier-grade chassis implementation, providing some of the greatest port concentration in the industry. To ensure the scale necessary to manage the growing influx of data, Gigamon's nodes within the Visibility Fabric architecture interconnect seamlessly and are able to process traffic across a non-blocking backplane chassis architecture.
"Big Data is no a longer a problem unique to enterprise data centers. Mobile carriers are now facing a deluge of traffic in their pipes, from an increasingly mobile workforce and the proliferation of smart devices and applications. Mobile carriers must have the capacity to connect pipes to individual analytics tools at the network core and concentration points, to ensure accurate data processing and analysis, as they have already invested a tremendous amount into their existing tools. Gigamon's technology uniquely provides the necessary volume, port density and scale that enables each tool to function at maximum efficiency whilst keeping monitored traffic off the production network, saving the carrier significant costs that translate into cost savings for the subscriber," said Andy Huckridge, director of Service Provider Solutions at Gigamon.

Anite Achieves Industry Leading Peak Data Rates for LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation
FLEET, England, February 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Achieved data rates fulfil carrier aggregation requirements driven by
leading US operators
Anite, a global leader in wireless testing technology, today announced that, by
working in close collaboration with leading chipset manufacturers, it has achieved peak
data rates with commercial devices for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) carrier aggregation.
LTE-A will extend the features of LTE to deliver the equivalent of a fixed-line
broadband experience to the end user, promising peak data rates of around 3Gbps, which
will allow subscribers to work effectively 'on the move'. However, achieving these peak
data rates over a mobile network poses one of the biggest challenges the industry has ever
had to face due to the complexity of the LTE-A technology coupled with limitations set by
form factors and frequency bandwidths.
Carrier aggregation allows mobile operators to achieve higher spectrum efficiency and
superior data rates through the use of narrower spectrum bandwidths instead of large
contiguous blocks of spectrum, which is scarce and not easily obtainable. Anite achieved
these peak data rates using its Development Toolset solution and commercial third party
devices for the 10+10 MHz bandwidths required by leading US mobile operators.
Anite's proven LTE-A protocol test solution provides flexible and comprehensive
LTE-Advanced device testing capability. Development Toolset now supports key LTE-A
features such as carrier aggregation of up to 20+20 MHz bandwidth and also provides
support for a 4x2 antenna configuration. This will enable chipset manufacturers to develop
reliable LTE-A products in line with their milestones. With its simple to use graphical
interface, Development Toolset speeds up testing programmes and enables users to test
across a wide range of technologies. Users have access to a library of test cases, which
contribute to enhancing the productivity from the very early stages of the development of
a new chipset or device.
"Working as a strategic partner to a number of leading chipset manufacturers, Anite's
LTE-A solutions offer industry leading data rates", says Paul Beaver, Products Director at
Anite. He continues, "Our lab-based test solutions ensure that LTE-A devices and chipsets
are rigorously tested in a controllable and repeatable way - this leads to significant
time and cost savings."

IBM MobileFirst Helps Organizations Strengthen App Security
Made in IBM Labs: Security Software Shows Where Vulnerabilities Appear in iOS Apps
ARMONK, N.Y., Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced security software that helps organizations proactively reduce the security risk to iOS enterprise apps. Clients will be able to build security testing into the initial design of mobile apps so that vulnerabilities can be detected early in the development process, before being deployed to customers or employees. Today's announcement further expands the IBM MobileFirst portfolio, which marries deep expertise with a comprehensive set of mobile software and cloud-based services.
According to Gartner, more than 45.6 billion mobile apps were downloaded in 2012. As the rate of app use on mobile devices increases, securing smartphones and other endpoint devices is a top priority for organizations and Chief Information Security Officers. With the proliferation of consumer and enterprise mobile apps, organizations cannot always control or restrict the apps installed on user devices, so they must test how apps send and save data. IBM's new security software can automatically identify where data enters and leaves a mobile app, helping to prevent mobile data leakage.
Improving Security and Reducing Costs of iOS Mobile Apps
The pace of mobile application releases and updates can be overwhelming for organizations trying to maintain strict security guidelines and policies. IBM AppScan Source 8.7 for iOS provides the ability to improve security quality without sacrificing time-to-market of mobile app projects. This allows organizations to better protect each mobile app release in the face of constant updates. IBM previously announced IBM AppScan for apps running on the Android platform.
KiwiTech is a leading mobile technology firm headquartered in Washington DC, and offices in New York and New Delhi. The company has developed more than 750 apps which have generated over three million downloads on iOS and Android platforms. With more than 200 mobile development and related professionals focused on app development, including security is a top priority for the organization.
"Over the last four years, KiwiTech has developed hundreds of iOS and Android mobile apps for organizations around the world. As the risk from mobile malware and data leakage grows, our customers are looking for ways to secure their iOS and Android apps and protect corporate data," said Rakesh Gupta, Chief Executive Officer, KiwiTech. "The new IBM AppScan product will allow us to proactively secure mobile apps and automate security testing to ensure our customers can keep pace with constant updates."
In addition, IBM AppScan Source 8.7 for iOS can help reduce the cost of developing secure apps by building security analysis early into the development cycle. It provides developers with an unmatched view into where vulnerabilities appear in their mobile apps, which improves security quality without sacrificing time to market of mobile app projects.
"This new capability showcases IBM's execution in our strategy to help clients incorporate security into their infrastructure and solutions from the design, development and testing phases rather than leaving security to become an afterthought," said Caleb Barlow, Director of Application, Data and Mobile Security, IBM. "It also aligns with the IBM MobileFirst strategy by empowering organizations with confidence to aggressively evolve and seize the business potential that mobility promises."
New capabilities to IBM AppScan Source 8.7 for iOS include:
-- Complete Language Support for Objective-C, JavaScript and Java: Includes
the ability to do call and data flow analysis that will generate trace
information. This new capability enables organizations to build secure
enterprise mobile apps, regardless of technology choice, for employees
and partners.
-- Support for US Federal Government Requirements: Internet Protocol
version 6 (IPv6) and use of a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic module.
-- 40,000 Mobile Security APIs Supported: IBM Security Research conducted a
comprehensive analysis on the iOS Software Development Kit (SDK) to
include coverage of APIs that might introduce security risks. The API
profiles have been added to the IBM AppScan Source Security
Knowledgebase and tied to the analysis engine. Combined with the
research conducted on the Android SDK, IBM AppScan Source has researched
and characterized the security risk of approximately 40,000 mobile APIs.
IBM AppScan Source 8.7 for iOS is planned for release on March 25th.
About IBM Security
AppScan is part of IBM's portfolio that provides the security intelligence to help organizations holistically protect their people, data, applications and infrastructure. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Introduces PlayStation®4 (PS4(TM))
PS4's Powerful System Architecture, Social Integration and Intelligent Personalization, Combined with PlayStation Network with Cloud Technology, Delivers Breakthrough
Gaming Experiences and Completely New Ways to Play
NEW YORK, Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today introduced PlayStation®4 (PS4(TM)), its next generation computer entertainment system that redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. Combined with PlayStation®Network with cloud technology, PS4 offers an expansive gaming ecosystem that is centered on gamers, enabling them to play when, where and how they want. PS4 will be available this holiday season.
PS4 was designed from the ground up to ensure that the very best games and the most immersive experiences reach PlayStation gamers. PS4 accomplishes this by enabling the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs.
PS4 also fluidly connects players to the larger world of experiences offered by PlayStation, across the console and mobile spaces, and PlayStation® Network (PSN).
The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.
The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.
PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance.
The end result for gamers is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences that shatter expectations.
Shared Game Experiences
Social interaction is central to PS4 experiences, so new features were built into the actual foundation of the system's hardware architecture. PS4 provides dedicated, "always on" video compression and decompression systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. For the first time ever, gamers can share their epic triumphs with the press of a button. Gamers simply hit the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game--the video uploads as the gamer plays. Gamers can share their images and videos to their friends on social networking services such as Facebook.
PS4 also enhances social spectating by enabling gamers to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to friends using live internet streaming services such as Ustream. During live broadcasts, friends can make comments on the streamed gameplay and, if a gamer gets stuck on a challenging level, friends can also join the game in completely new ways. For example, friends can offer health potions or special weapons when a player needs them most during actual gameplay.
Furthermore, users can connect their Facebook account with Sony Entertainment Network account. Through PS4, users are able to deepen their connections through co-op play or "cross-game chat".
PS4 Second Screens
PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita), smartphones and tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by second screens is "Remote Play" and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita's beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks(*)(1). It is SCEI's long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita(*2).
A new application from SCE called "PlayStation®App" will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android(TM) based smartphones and tablets(*3) to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.
Immediate Gameplay
PS4 radically reduces the lag time between players and their content. PS4 features "suspend mode" which keeps the system in a low power state while preserving the game session. The time it takes today to boot a console and load a saved game will be a thing of the past. With PS4, gamers just hit the power button again and are promptly back playing the game at the exact point where they left off. Additionally, users can boot a variety of applications including a web browser when playing a game on PS4.
PS4 also enables games to be downloaded or updated in the background, or even in stand-by mode. The system takes it one step further by making digital titles playable as they are being downloaded. When a player purchases a game, PS4 downloads just a fraction of the data so gamers can start playing immediately, and the rest is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay.
Personalized, Curated Content
On the newly designed PS4 menu screen, players can look over game-related information shared by friends, view friends' gameplay with ease, or obtain information of recommended content, including games, TV shows and movies. The long-term goal of PS4 is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero: if the system knows enough about a player to predict the next game they will purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before they even click the "buy" button. PS4 will further enrich users' entertainment experiences, by meeting their potential needs.
Gaming in the Cloud
Launched in November 2006, PlayStation Network, a network service for PlayStation users, now operates in 67 countries and regions(*4) around the world with the total number of downloaded content of more than 2.8 billion(*5). In addition to a variety of games available in PlayStation®Store, PS4 users will be able to enjoy a variety of services offered by PSN, such as Sony Corporation's Music Unlimited, a cloud-based music subscription service and Video Unlimited, a premium video service, as well as various content distribution services.
By combining PlayStation Network with Gaikai Inc's cloud technology, it is SCE's goal to make free exploration possible for various games. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game -- not a stripped down version of the game. With Gaikai and PlayStation Store, gamers will be able to experience appealing games and only pay for the games they actually love. PlayStation Network and the cloud will offer additional value to PlayStation gamers. SCE is exploring unique opportunities enabled by cloud technology with the long-term vision of making PlayStation libraries including an incredible catalog of more than 3000 PS3 titles(*6) that is unmatched in the industry, mostly ubiquitous on PS4.
SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.

Sony Computer Entertainment Introduces Wireless Controller For Playstation®4 (DUALSHOCK®4) And Playstation®4 Eye
New Controller and Camera Offer New Ways to Enjoy Games on PlayStation®4
NEW YORK, Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced Wireless Controller for PlayStation®4 (DUALSHOCK®4) and PlayStation®4 Eye, a new camera, along with PlayStation®4 (PS4(TM)), its next generation computer entertainment system.
Wireless Controller for PlayStation®4 (DUALSHOCK®4)
Utilizing a similar design as the popular Wireless Controller for PlayStation®3(DUALSHOCK®3), DUALSHOCK®4 features new innovations to deliver better gaming experiences. DUALSHOCK®4 incorporates a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor, as well as a touch pad located on the front of the controller, which offers gamers completely new ways to play and interact with games.
DUALSHOCK®4 features a light bar on the top with three color LEDs that illuminate in various colors. The light bar illuminates to match the color of characters in a game to offer a simpler, more friendly way to identify players, even when playing side by side. The light bar also changes patterns during gameplay to provide useful information to gamers, such as when a character is critically low on health or has taken major damage.
In addition, DUALSHOCK®4 will come with a built-in speaker and stereo headset jack, enabling PS4 users to enjoy high-fidelity sound effects of games from both the TV and also from the controller. Combined with the Mono Headset that will be bundled with PS4, gamers will also be able to chat with friends playing online, while hearing sound effects from the controller in hand.
While integrating "SELECT" and "START" buttons on DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller into a new "OPTIONS button", DUALSHOCK®4 is newly equipped with a "SHARE button" to further enhance PS4's social capabilities. The "SHARE button" allows gamers to easily broadcast their gameplay in real-time to friends through internet streaming services such as Ustream. Users can also share their triumphs and accomplishments by uploading video gameplay to Facebook with the "SHARE button". Unlike streaming content via PC, users no longer have to convert data formats of their recorded gameplay, but can share it with ease. Additionally, gamers can charge DUALSHOCK®4 while PS4 is on standby or through a dedicated charging station. For convenience, DUALSHOCK®4 can also be charged with smartphone chargers via USB.
During the creation of DUALSHOCK®4, Sony Computer Entertainment worked with key partners in the development community to improve the feel of the left / right sticks and the trigger buttons, the result is a much tighter sense of control over in-game actions.
PlayStation®4 Eye
PlayStation®4 Eye, a newly developed camera for PS4 incorporates two high-sensitive cameras that have wide-angle lenses with 85-degree diagonal angle views which can recognize the depth of space precisely. This enables PlayStation®4 Eye to cut out the image of the player from the background, or to grasp players' position in front and behind, further broadening the ways to enjoy games. Incorporated four microphones are also capable of accurate sound detection and source origination. In addition, users will be able to login to their PS4 with face recognition and are capable of using their own body movements or voices to enjoy games more intuitively. Furthermore, PlayStation®4 Eye senses the color of DUALSHOCK®4's light bar to judge the positions of multiple players, and set characters in the same positions or let a character talk to a particular player, enabling players to enjoy games in new way. PlayStation®4 Eye also supports PlayStation®Move motion controller. It detects the motion of PS Move more precisely, and reflects players' in-game motion more accurately than ever.
SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.

Videogame Industry's Brightest Minds Convene In New York As Part Of Sony Computer Entertainment's Introduction Of PlayStation®4
Game Creators Provide Sneak Peek into Play Experiences That Will Define PlayStation®4 And the Unprecedented Power, Deep Social Capabilities, and Instant Accessibility Offered by the Next-Generation Platform
NEW YORK, Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today introduced PlayStation®4 (PS4(TM)), its next-generation gaming platform for the home, alongside the videogame industry's brightest and most creative minds at PlayStation®Meeting 2013. With unprecedented power, deep social capabilities, and instant accessibility, PS4 allows game creators to unleash their imaginations and deliver new play experiences to gamers that were never before possible. The live audience at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, along with millions of fans streaming the event around the world, were also provided with a sneak peek of some of the games that will ultimately define the PS4 experience.
Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. officially announced PS4 and presented the broader vision for PlayStation® evolving from a console in the living room into the best place to play wherever gamers are: "Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences," House remarked. "Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding 'idea' about the future of play - an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers."
Acclaimed game designer and industry veteran Mark Cerny then took the stage to discuss PS4 in more detail, including the powerful system components that will give developers the canvas to fully express their creative ideas and deliver more immersive gaming that transcends today's expectations. Cerny, the lead system architect for PS4, also talked about the five key principles guiding the design of the consumer experience that will surround all games: simple, immediate, social, integrated, and personalized.
"We wanted to ensure that nothing would come between the platform and the joy of play," Cerny said. "We also wanted to be sure that the system architecture could fluidly connect the player to a larger world of experiences, and provide easy access to everything PlayStation® has to offer - across the console and mobile spaces, and PlayStation®Network. And we were able to create, in PS4, a platform by game creators for game creators."
David Perry, noted developer and CEO of Gaikai Inc., which joined SCE group last year, announced the ambitions for PlayStation®Network and how PS4 will leverage Gaikai's cloud technology to deliver a sea change in how consumers discover, access, share and enjoy games. Whether that's connecting PSN more deeply into social networks or broadcasting the game a user is playing in real time or getting help from friends in new ways, the gaming experience on PS4 is rooted in social interaction. Perry also discussed the company's goal to make free exploration possible for various games, a concept he described as, "Try it for free, share it if you like it, only pay for games you fall in love with."
PS4 integrates second screens, including PS Vita, smartphones and tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. SCE's long-term goal is to make almost every PS4 title playable on PS Vita by using Remote Play over Wi-Fi networks. "PS Vita is the ultimate companion device for PS4, enabling gamers to pull their games from their beautiful HDTVs to PS Vita's beautiful 5-inch screen," Perry noted.
The spotlight moved toward some of the most creative individuals in the development and publishing community, highlighting how PS4 brings a new synergy between hardware and software to enable new emotional states of play never before possible. "The future of PlayStation is about great games - inspiring, new experiences from the imaginations of the world's best creators," said Michael Denny, SVP, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
Denny introduced developers behind some of the first-party titles being created exclusively for the new platform, including Guerrilla Games' Hermen Hulst, Sucker Punch Productions' Nate Fox, and Evolution Studios' Matt Southern.
"'Next Generation' no longer just means 'more powerful hardware,'" Southern said. "We're a next generation of gamer, we want to play great looking games but in new ways that fit our permanently-connected lives. To us, that means driving in a team. It's such a thrill for a studio to be asked to help define new PlayStation technology, so that we can bring our vision for team based racing to life."
Celebrated independent developer Jonathan Blow then unveiled the first official trailer for The Witness, which will be exclusive to PS4 for console and underscores PlayStation's support of developers interested in pushing the boundaries of play.
PlayStation®Meeting 2013 also featured two of the gaming industry's most talented creators providing a glimpse into the future of what's possible on PS4. David Cage from Quantic Dream explored narrative-driven gaming and how PS4's powerful hardware lets developers forget about technology and focus on creating experiences that trigger emotions. "We can concentrate on what amazing stories we want to tell and what incredible worlds we want to create," Cage said. "We can take you to places you have never seen before and make you feel emotions that you have never felt in real life, without having to wonder if we will have the horsepower to do so. We are now only limited by our imagination."
Alex Evans from Media Molecule then re-imagined the concept of user-generated content and creativity. Armed with a PlayStation®Move motion controller, he demonstrated the freedom of expression that PS4 offers to creators, whether they're professional developers or gamers of all levels. Evans remarked: "PS4, in our eyes, should be 'the creative console'. It's the place you go to be inspired; It's the place to experience other's dreams, or make your own: it's the place you go, to make. With PS4, with the creative console, we want to change making in every way: from music to gaming to story-telling."
Building on PlayStation's long-standing history of collaborating with third-party partners, PS4 will have software support from virtually every major developer and publisher across North America, Europe and Japan. At PlayStation Meeting 2013, titles in development and technology demos were presented by partners including Activision Publishing, Inc., Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., Bungie, Inc., CAPCOM, Epic Games, Inc., Havok, SQUARE ENIX Co., Ltd., Ubisoft Entertainment, showcasing how the development community has already embraced PS3's ability to make their imaginations become reality.

Greenliant Now Shipping Industrial Temperature MLC NAND-based SATA and PATA NANDrive(TM) Solid State Drives
Showcasing Embedded SSD Portfolio at embedded world 2013
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Greenliant Systems, a leader in energy-efficient, highly secure and reliable solid state storage products, has begun volume production of its industrial temperature SATA and PATA interface NANDrive(TM) embedded solid state drives (SSDs) using 2-bits-per-cell (MLC) NAND flash memory. Overcoming the temperature sensitivity risk of MLC NAND, industrial temperature (I-temp) SATA and PATA NANDrive operate between -40 and +85 degrees Celsius.
Compared to significantly more expensive 1-bit-per-cell (SLC) NAND-based SSDs, I-temp MLC NANDrive offers cost-effective, ball grid array (BGA) products that meet quality and reliability requirements--such as avoiding uncorrectable errors and data retention issues--when the MLC NAND is operating at extremely low and high temperatures. NANDrive combines Greenliant's internally developed NAND controller with NAND flash die for a fully integrated SSD in a multi-chip package.
Other benefits of GLS85LS SATA and GLS85LP PATA NANDrive include:
-- Highly Efficient Wear Leveling Management: Achieves maximum SSD lifespan
for critical applications
-- Power Interrupt Data Protection: Ensures data integrity and reliability
by promptly detecting and recovering from system power failures
-- Configurable Security: Provides user-selectable protection zones and
military-grade "instant" erase commands
-- NANDrive Health Monitor: Estimates remaining SSD lifespan and takes
proactive actions to prevent costly data loss
"SATA and PATA NANDrive have been used in a multitude of embedded system designs to provide long life, small form factor and low power data storage," said Arthur Kroyan, vice president, business development and marketing, Greenliant Systems. "The addition of industrial temperature MLC NANDrive gives Greenliant customers more flexibility to select a rugged and reliable SSD that will meet their specific application needs, especially in the automotive, industrial and networking segments."
Exhibiting at embedded world
Greenliant will display the SATA, PATA and eMMC NANDrive product lineup in stand 503, hall 4A at embedded world 2013, Nuremberg, Germany, February 26-28. To schedule a meeting with Greenliant at embedded world, email sales@greenliant.com.
Availability
Industrial temperature 8, 16, 32 and 64 GByte SATA, and 8, 16, and 32 GByte PATA NANDrive devices are available now. Order GLS85LS SATA and GLS85LP PATA products through a Greenliant authorized distributor and sales representative. Customers can also request NANDrive product samples and evaluation boards.
About NANDrive(TM) Products
NANDrive manages all NAND flash complexities and allows embedded system designers to quickly integrate mass data storage solutions into their designs without having to make any firmware changes. Because NANDrive complies with ATA and eMMC interface protocols supported by all standard embedded operating systems, designers no longer face costly, time-consuming host software revalidation cycles. To further ease system integration and simplify inventory management, NANDrive solves the compatibility and obsolescence issues of pairing a NAND controller with new NAND flash devices. As an integrated multi-chip package solution, NANDrive eliminates the need for long qualification cycles when there is a change of NAND flash technology; customers need only qualify the NANDrive as a mass storage subsystem. WOODLAND PARK, N.J., Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxell Corporation of America, the technology leader in data storage and backup media, announces the availability of its LTO Ultrium 6 (LTO 6) data cartridge. With a faster compressed tape drive transfer rate of up to 400 MB/sec* and increased maximum storage capacity of up to 6.25 TB*, Maxell's LTO6 cartridges address the growing need of AV professionals for cost- and energy-efficient, reliable media solutions for a variety of professional broadcast and video applications.
"Maxell recently completed the LTO Ultrium 6 data cartridge compliance verification process, including an exhaustive series of tests to confirm interchange compatibility with other drives and media," said Pat Byrne, senior marketing manager for Maxell. With the capacity to hold today's large, graphic-intensive files, LTO Ultrium 6 specifically addresses customers with increasing archival and storage needs at an incredible value. Users can rest assured that the Linear Tape File System continues to ensure quick and easy access to files, and can remain confident of the compatibility and interchangeability between Maxell LTO Ultrium media, and all brands of Ultrium drives and media."
LTO 6 features Write Once, Read Many (WORM) functionality and advanced encryption capabilities, making it extremely well suited for backup and archival applications requiring high security, such as legal and medical records, and financial data that must comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. It also incorporates a Linear Tape File System (LTFS), which allows LTO 6 to be used in a manner similar to that of hard disk drives (HDDs). Because LTO 6 is a tape technology, it has inherent advantages compared to HDD, including dramatically lowering energy consumption and reducing storage media costs.
NeoSMART Maximizes LTO 6 Technology
The incorporation of Maxell's patented NeoSMART (Super Maximum-capacity Advanced Reliability Tape) technology maximizes the benefits of LTO 6. Ultra-fine ceramic-armored metal particles with high energy and superior recording performance augment the LTO 6 capacity, as well as create an added level of protection from corrosion, for advanced archival storage life and superior durability. Extremely accurate servo writing technologies, which Maxell developed in its manufacturing process, ensure stable servo characteristics and superior tracking reliability, corresponding to increased data track density to achieve the high capacity of LTO 6.
Maxell also developed advanced dispersion and calendaring processes that improve read/write performance, and ensure high output and enhanced stability, complementing the increased recording density. Superior durability and excellent stability - two critical attributes in data storage and archiving - are further enhanced by special lubricant control and advanced filler uniformity developed for the head/tape interface.
NeoSMART creates additional advantages for AV professionals. It utilizes a basefilm with superior dimensional stability to ensure reliability and durability for high-density recording and playback, as well as archival storage. It also has a uniform, ultra-thin sub-micron coating and advanced calendaring processes to achieve remarkably high output and enhanced stability for read/write performance. A built-in non-contact 16kB memory chip stores historical usage records and enables high-speed data searches. The chip is also used by Maxell Cartridge Memory Analyzers to diagnose drive or tape abnormalities.

The SingleHop Public Cloud leverages the rich capabilities of the VMware vCloud® Suite, enabling users to quickly shift processing workloads from internal to virtual resources as needed. Users are able to manage their cloud services through SingleHop's innovative LEAP Control Panel. Because of the advanced cloud server deployment technology in the VMware vCloud Suite, cloud servers can be added or subtracted in as little as 60 seconds to match demand in real-time.
Adding to the appeal of the SingleHop Public Cloud is its exceptional failover protection backed by its scalable SAN-based cloud storage system. Hourly, rather than monthly, usage billing ensures that organizations pay only for the exact resources allocated, while enjoying free 24/7/365 access to qualified, VMware-certified engineers for reliable high-level technical support and peace-of-mind.
"The promise and potential of cloud computing carries with it the need for reliability and responsiveness. The new SingleHop Public Cloud, based on VMware cloud infrastructure technology, gives users of all sizes exactly what they need," said Andy Pace, SingleHop Chief Operating Officer. The SingleHop Public Cloud is an exceptional choice by almost any standard. Features include:
-- Mobile Accessibility. SingleHop's LEAP Control Panel can be accessed
from anywhere via PC, iPhone, iPad or Android device. In addition to
offering fingertip control of physical and virtual resources,
notifications, alerts and updates are delivered automatically.
-- AutoScaling. Create your own rules-based guidelines for automatically
increasing or decreasing the RAM, number of processors, or storage you
use in your SingleHop cloud-based resource.
-- Hourly Billing. Development teams, testing, and other groups with
variable resource needs benefit from hourly--compared to
monthly--billing as they scale their use of cloud-based resources up and
down to meet their to-the-moment needs. Hourly billing is available
across all SingleHop Public Cloud resources, including its
application-hosting product, Hosted Cloud Apps.
-- SAN-based Storage with Automatic Failover. The SingleHop Public Cloud
replaces local storage with a robust and fully redundant SAN-based cloud
storage solution. This means that if the cloud server you are using for
processing should ever fail, the system will automatically spin up a new
instance which connects to the same storage allocation--saving you what
could otherwise be hours of data transfer and resource reconfiguration.
Failover happens fast, often without missing a ping.
-- Load Balancing. SingleHop's VMware-based infrastructure provides
automated load balancing between multi-node deployments. This means Web
servers or application servers are easily configured to balance traffic
between multiple cloud servers for optimal performance.
-- Faster Deployment. Virtual resources can be deployed more than 5 times
faster than before with our new Public Cloud offering. Deployment times
for cloud servers are in the 60-second range.
-- Template and Capture Functionality. VMware technology allows users to
create a template of any server or group of servers to revert or
replicate as needed. The capability is especially useful for routine
configuration of multiple virtual machines.
-- Supports both Windows and Linux operating systems.
"One of the primary goals for our new VMware-based Public Cloud offering was to blend our award-winning service with an enterprise-class cloud product," said Marc Bollinger, SingleHop Development Manager. "In fact, our customer-centric focus leads everything we do. Not only do we offer the industry's most comprehensive SLA on all our products, but our support structure ensures that customers talk to a certified SingleHop technician, not a call center representative."
