Xeon or Core 2 Duo? Old Fri Nov 10, 2006 9:44:58 PM #26963 Perm Link
I'm going to be purchasing my new system stuff tomorrow.

I'm considering the Xeon 3040 or the Core 2 Duo E6300. Both are pretty much the same part.

The different being the Xeon is a Xeon. I hate the "Core" name.

Any thoughts?

I don't know much about Xeons, but I do know that Core 2 Duo's rock my socks. Cool, quiet, and FAST.

If you don't like the name, just call it a Xeon. Its the same part anyways, right?

I would get the Xeon over the Core 2 just because the Xeon should be a better CPU, maybe.

If it is the same part, who cares?

The Xeon is a server CPU right? Is it the Core2Duo equivalent as a server CPU?

If it is then the Xeon CPU should OC a bit better since the quality control of server CPUs is ususally better than desktop models.

Example the AMD Opterons and AMD 64 Cpus.

I think I'll get the E6400 actually.

The CPU is on sale at CompUSA for a good price. $210. Cheaper than Newegg.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, is that straight up, or is there a mail-in rebate with that?

Once the E6400 hits that much or lower, but in CAD, I would be happy as all I need to make the plunge into DDR2 is a CPU and a mobo.

I made a big mistake when I got my computer and got a 939 board, so now I have limited expansion options. It sucks.

Aron, now that I think about it, go for a Xeon. Its got a cool name, AND, its just cool having a server processor in a PC.

I'd love to make the jump to a C2D one of these days, but like most others, the total cost with having to get a new MoBo and ram is holding me back for now.

There is always new hardware coming out so its not really a total waste but in your case it is since S939 is dead and over with.
The AM2 socket won't last too long either and will have the shortest socket life span.

Its a really good processor. It runs fast, and the Conroe stays insanely cool. Maximum PC unplugged the fan, so it was passive cooling (on a stock heatsink), and the processor idled at a low temperature for 3 hours before it started acting funny.

I'm not really sure about Xeon. I don't see that advertised much as a PC processor, so I haven't read up on it.

Xeon is a server CPU so it probably costs more then a Core2Duo.

So, I understand that you can run a server CPU in a PC, but can you run a PC CPU in a server?

As long as the socket is the same and the mobo recognizes it.

Example

S939 A64 and S939 Opteron.

Okay, so then what is a point of a separate version of CPU for a server? I mean, if you can run a PC CPU in a server, why don't they put on the package "Great for Servers!" or something like that?

The Xeon can run in dual CPU boards that the Core cannot.

And I have purchased an E6400 from CompUSA for $209.

I always go for the cheapest chip so I can OC the heck out of it. I hope for a Core2Duo; either the E6300($215CAD) and E6400($260CAD) would be good since they are currently within a reasonable price and should be cheaper next year.
