insuling cartoons about Prophet of Islam! an irresponsible act of european newspapers Old Fri Feb 3, 2006 11:40:12 AM #14746 Perm Link
hi, insulting sketch about The Prophet of Islam in Denish and other european newspapers is a very bad act. freedom of expression does not mean that one is allowed to play with the sentiments of a great number of people. such things can add "fire to fuel" in already "burning" world. Muslims can never and will never do or say anything like that about Jesus Christ because they are ordered to respect Jesus Christ (as a religious belief). western media should also take care, they better do something for harmony and peace in this world. in the end very thanx to United States for condeming such action.

I think that the newspapers had every right to print what they did, but they really should have thought about the consequences when you disrespect the beliefs of others and mock a figure in such a way. I personnally found them very offensive, more so than what you'll see in comic depictions of Christ or God in US papers/cartoons/etc.

Worth killing over? No, of course not. Worth protesting the papers involved? Well, people stopped eating crepes because France didn't want to invade Iraq, so yeah, sure.

America is about free speech. This is a perfect example of free speech. The point of a political cartoon is to get people talking about the issue and it is doing just that.

Yeah, that's why when someone does a cartoon about Bush spying on us, Rush and O'Reily say "People should be careful about what they say about the president".

Rush and O'Reily are losers who can't see past their right wing Christianness*. They don't hear themselves talk, and Mr. O'Reily is a douche. His name has a "'" in it.

For some reason, people who have a ' in their name seem pretencious. Ya know what really pisses me off about Rush Limbaugh? He has the same name as one of the best damn bands of all time. Sometimes, I'll flip through radio stations and hear "coming up next: RUSH!" And i'm thinking "Oh, kickass, I wonder if they'll play 'Spirit of the Radio' or '2112' and then next thing you know I'm listening to some jackass talk about how evil the Sandanistas were and how Communism is the greatest threat our world faces next to terrorism. (no shit, he actually said all this bull just this morning)

You're right about him too, he really can't hear himself talk.

Those muslims overreacted. COMPLETELY and utterly. It is O.K. and natural to be angered about this sort of thing, and maybe to send the paper in question hate mail or to have a shouting match with the guy who drew it. But not at all to blaim the country or continent for insulting them and attacking their embassies.

Freedom of speech has been an ideal for the last coupla centuries and a general principle for the last few decades at least afaict. They should revolutionize their country for not giving them them this instead of attacking countries that guerantee it.

i dont understand y super powers want to impose their ideas on rest of the world? if u think freedom of expression is the best thing. u can use it for u within ur civilization. dont force or involve others in it. as for as muslim world is concerned they do have and respect freedom of expression but not of this sort. for Christians, Christ may not be an important and respectable personality(that is their problem), but for muslims Prophet is The Most important and most respectable. they cant tolerate such things for him. they have certain limits .... others should understand.

Bullshit. We aren't imposing anything. This is not even the USA doing anything. It is a totally different country. I guess you haven't heard that Christ has been shit on in this country before, tough shit.

Religious debates and cartoons that are invoking a group of people to perform killings and riots should just not happen in the world today... the fact that it does means that the group of people has a problem, that problem should be dealt with by force if needed.

Hypocrite...

Your argument is flawed because most of the rioters DO NOT tolerate the other religious beliefs. Go into any Mulsim country and you'll constantly see cartoons about Jewish people and Christian people, etc...

If you can't take the heat, don't dish it out.

This brings me back to my first point, why should a group of people start killing and raising over an image? Are they tolerate to the people they killed?

I can understand it from the Muslim's point of view. Their religion tells them that, basically, anyone who isn't of their religion is an Infidel and a sinner. Their religion also includes the fact that there can be no graphic representation of their god. This had offended them MAJORLY, not to mention the fact that the cartoon not only showed a picture, but it also mocked the god. I know, freedon of speech has been around, but not in their country. They're not accustomed to it, and I wouldn't expect them to be. They may be overreacting with the threats, but they will accept a formal apology. When it comes to religion, it's something that is best not to insult. People rely on religion, because, well, they need something to believe to hold on to. You have to understand that, and that was just stomping all over it, which was previously outlawed in their country.

I'm very suprised that Bush said he supported the newspaper's right to free speech. I guess he doesn't mind what anyone says, as long as he can secretly tape it and then throw them in a gulag if it isn't to his liking.

It is of course understandible to be enraged over such a cartoon if you firmly believe in the subject. But this happened in a different society where free speech happens to be one of the rights guaranteed. The Muslims should respect that. Westerners respect their view of women's right as well. The exception to this is when a Muslim in a Western country does something illegal according to that country's law on behalf of this view. Likewise, if something like this happened in a Muslim country, the situation would be completely different.

I would have to pick 2. We are in a society currently that #1 is operating in. Political correctness is stupid.

I like how you made the second option a violent option and not the first, clearly the first option would also bring violence.

Have you no understanding of human nature? People cannot just simply respect it and let it go, it'll never work. If they say whatever else they want, then violence will start, because, believe it or not, humans are like that.

One of the reasons (probably the main reason, actually) they got so upset over the cartoons is because according to the Qu'Ran* (their Bible) Muhammad is not supposed to be depicted in any picture or image.

This being a tech focused forum, spelling doesn't count.

Realistically, people don't respect the beliefs of others, especially those who belong to religions which state that non-believers are infidels and must be converted (or something along those lines). Speaking of which, I wonder how many people Mormons convert door to door, and if they've ever thought of doing fund raising through similar methods. (IE: Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savoir? No? You'd rather not? Well, would you accept this delicious chocolate bar as a snack for only $2?)

Indeed, they don't force anyone to convert.

However, they strongly believe that anyone who isn't of their religion must be dirty, and a sinner. So, it's not too different.

Keep in mind that's a common characteristic of the more successful religious movements, it helps recruitment numbers if people honestly believe their neighbor will go to hell for worshipping the wrong God.
