Adobe under attack: New PDF, Flash zero-day

Poster: Daniel Doty
Posted on October 28, 2010 at 7:40:07 PM
According to an article published today on ZDNet, Adobe is under attack again! Here is a little of what the article states as a summary of the issue:

Quote

A critical vulnerability has been identified in Flash Player 10.1.85.3 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris; Adobe Flash Player 10.1.95.2 and earlier versions for Android; and the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows and Macintosh. This vulnerability (CVE-2010-3654) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

Adobe Releases Flash x86-64 Beta For Linux

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 16, 2010 at 10:02:19 AM
This is very interesting news. Adobe initially shunned the x86-64 branch of the Flash player and forced many to run the 32-bit player in a wrapper on 64-bit systems.

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/

Adobe has just updated their player to support x86-64, natively, on Linux (and Mac/Windows). This player still does not support any sort of additional hardware rendering that is present on the Windows and Mac builds. If you don't want to use Adobe's Flash, you can try Lightspark.

Adobe Opens Specs For SWF And FLV

This is a huge move for the industry. Adobe will release specifications and relinquish the licensing fees/restrictions for their Flash based formats. This move allows anyone to write and show content in this format with ease (if you understand the code). Adobe is not releasing their player or writing software, just the formats.

The Open Screen Project is working to enable a consistent runtime environment – taking advantage of Adobe Flash Player and, in the future, Adobe AIR -- that will remove barriers for developers and designers as they publish content and applications across desktops and consumer devices, including phones, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and set top boxes. The Open Screen Project will address potential technology fragmentation by allowing the runtime technology to be updated seamlessly over the air on mobile devices. The consistent runtime environment will provide optimal performance across a variety of operating systems and devices, and ultimately provide the best experience to consumers.

Pocket IE Gets Flash Lite

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 17, 2008 at 2:00:06 PM
Microsoft will license a mobile version of Adobe's flash player for use in its Pocket IE browser. They are also putting in Silverlight support. Silverlight is a waste. It is Microsoft's attempt at controlling (yet again) the internet through content. Flash is the de facto standard.

Quote

The two companies are expected to announce Monday that Microsoft has signed a license to use Flash Lite and Reader LE in future Windows Mobile handsets as plug-ins for Internet Explorer Mobile. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, such as what the companies plan to do when Microsoft releases Silverlight for Mobile, a competing technology. Flash Lite is a stripped-down version of the ubiquitous Flash video player that allows mobile handsets to view Web sites created with the Flash technology. Think of Flash Lite as a slightly older version of Flash; the most current version of Flash Lite can't properly display Web sites created with the newest version of Flash, Flash 9, but it works with sites created using older versions of the technology.

Adobe Buys Buzzword

No, they aren't buying AJAX... They are buying a web word processor company called Buzzword.

The move expands Adobe's collaborative software services and steps up its competition with Microsoft and a host of other Web application providers, including Google. Adobe also is scheduled to announce a service, code-named Share, that allows people to invite others to view and access documents stored by Adobe. Documents can be embedded inside a Web page as well. The service, which is still in testing mode, will offer users one gigabyte of storage for free. Adobe executives are scheduled to detail these initiatives at its Max 2007 developer and designer conference, which starts Monday in Chicago.

Adobe To Submit PDF To ISO

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 29, 2007 at 2:49:00 PM
Impressive news from Adobe and for the entire PDF community. Adobe will submit the entire PDF specification to ISO. This is a great move to cement PDF in the open standards world.

Quote

PDF has become a de facto global standard for more secure and dependable information exchange since Adobe published the complete PDF specification in 1993. Both government and private industry have come to rely on PDF for the volumes of electronic records that need to be more securely and reliably shared, managed, and in some cases preserved for generations. Since 1995 Adobe has participated in various working groups that develop technical specifications for publication by ISO and worked within the ISO process to deliver specialized subsets of PDF as standards for specific industries and functions. Today, PDF for Archive (PDF/A) and PDF for Exchange (PDF/X) are ISO standards, and PDF for Engineering (PDF/E) and PDF for Universal Access (PDF/UA) are proposed standards. Additionally, PDF for Healthcare (PDF/H) is an AIIM proposed Best Practice Guide. AIIM serves as the administrator for PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/UA and PDF/H.

Adobe To Post Photoshop CS3 Beta

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 15, 2006 at 3:10:09 PM
Adobe will be opening the Photoshop CS3 beta to owners that currently have 2.0. On the Mac side of things, universal binary support is here. Hopefully more companies will begin to really port their apps over to Apple software.

Quote

The final version of Photoshop CS3 is due in spring 2007, according to Adobe. Adobe will make the beta available as a universal binary--meaning it will run on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs--for the Macintosh, as well as for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista. The release will include an early version of an upgrade to Adobe Bridge, an application for managing files. The beta will also include a new tool, Adobe Device Central, for creating content for mobile devices.

Flash 9 Beta For Linux Released

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 19, 2006 at 2:34:33 PM
There is a beta from Adobe of its Flash product. Many sites have moved to version 9 and it leaves Linux out in the cold. I think I'm still running 7.

Quote

While we are still working out exactly how to distribute the final Player version to be as easy as possible for the typical end user, this beta includes 2 gzip'd tarball packages: one is for the Mozilla plugin and the other is for a GTK-based Standalone Flash Player. Either will need to be downloaded manually via the Adobe Labs website and unpacked. The standalone Player (gflashplayer) can be run in place (after you set its executable permission). The plugin is dropped into your local plugin directory (for a local user) or the system-wide plugin directory.
