Enermax Fan review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 10, 2002 at 3:25:19 AM
Hey, I just report it.

Processing the Enermax air fans is very good. The potentiometer is a meaningful complement, these it does for the buyers' groups not disturb, that the air fan settlement is connected with some expenditure. With a price of approx. 13 Euros the Enermax air fans are actually favorable. Temperature regulated air fans cost usually more.

MSI i845E Max2 Review

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 11:01:47 PM
Viper's Lair reviewed this feature-loaded board.

Unlike your typical "vanilla" boards, the Max2 series come stacked with features. The i845E chipset is here of course, and along with it comes USB 2.0, ATA100, and a 133 FSB, quad pumped. Also present on the board is RAID ATA133 support, 6-channel sound, LAN, and a surprising entry, Bluetooth support.

Radeon 9700 numbers

315mhz clock with 15,000+ 3Dmarks.

As for performance, we learned that cards based on the 9700 should deliver a magnificent 15,000 3DMarks and will be able to beat Nvidia’s fastest offering for this summer by a few thousand in this very popular test. Nvidia’s best performance is between 10,000 and 11,000 depending on the configuration.

Triad shootout of Ti 4600

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 6:56:09 PM
That means three of them in this shootout.

However, if we were forced to pick a winner, the choice wouldn't be hard. Gainward's extremely-long-named GeForce4 PowerPack! Ultra/750 XP Golden Sample card is the best Ti 4600 card we've seen, either in this comparo or anywhere else. Its unique dual-DVI output capabilities make it a true bargain. (You might have to buy a Quadro to get dual DVI outputs otherwise.) Gainward bundles everything you'd expect with a $300-plus video card, including robust video editing abilities. This is a do-everything, workstation-class graphics card that will be at home inside of any enthusiast's system.

Shuttle SS40 review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 2:31:00 PM
Lost Circuits bangs out a review of the SS40 from Shuttle.

Nonetheless, there is a ton of possibilities left to play with, add a Matrox G550 PCI or a GeForce 4 MX PCI card, add extra blow holes and stick a GPU cooler fan onto the CPU heatsink just to move this stale hot air and lower the temps further.

Asus A7V333 review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 2:25:05 PM
Overclockers AU has a review of the Asus KT333 board.

The Asus A7V333, with RAID, FireWire and USB2.0 has genuinely "extra" features. If you need them, the A7V333 is a sensible choice - underneath the extra features is a very good motherboard. If you don't, then you'd be paying a premium for bits you don't need. Such is the problem with feature-packing a board: you raise the price and limit the market that the board appeals to. Given Asus's strong following to date though, I'm not surprised to find that this board has been a popular choice among our forum-goers.

IBM's anti vibration drive

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 2:21:29 PM
IBM's new Ultrastar hard drives incorporate anit vibration stuff.

Yet in situations where servers are stacked atop one another, vibrations can disrupt other hard drives in the stack. The Ultrastar hard drive compensates for the shaking and works to cancel it out, IBM says. The new 146GB drive offers a speed of 10,000rpm.

Itanium 2 support not yet ready

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 9, 2002 at 2:19:50 PM
The server side may be coming soon, but the workstation just isn't making it.

Microsoft will start to come out with an Itanium 2 version of Windows Advanced Server next month but won't issue a version of Windows XP for workstations until the first quarter of 2003. Windows.Net enterprise and data-center servers for Itanium will ship to manufacturers this year but likely won't be in customers' hands until next year.
UnitedLinux, a consortium of Linux developers that includes SuSE and Turbolinux, said a version of the Linux OS designed to run on a variety of Itanium 2 machines will come out in the second half of the year.

Games help terrorism

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 8, 2002 at 7:42:49 PM
Wrong, the help to stop it by letting people vent in cyberspace. (Rather kill bytes than peeps).

Cooper said the cross-border nature of the Internet was also creating strange alliances, such as between white supremacists and Islamic extremists over a perceived common Jewish enemy. Many groups had used images of the burning World Trade Center towers to criticize U.S policy and condemn Jews or to oppose Muslims.

X-micro Ti 4200 review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 8, 2002 at 7:40:49 PM
got apex? (nope) has a review of a Ti 4200.

The Impact T4200 is definitely one heck of a performer. The T4200 ran the applications I used to benchmark it a shade faster than the direct competitor, VisionTek's Xtasy Ti 4200 every time. Not only that, when overclocked, the card will darned near take out a default clocked Ti 4600. That is seriously impressive as the 4600 is currently the fastest gaming solution available. This card would seem to be exactly the low cost screamer that gamers were hoping for. I almost had to give out a perfect ten here but that would leave me no room to move should the next 4200 I test be a little faster. Kinda like the whole figure skating judging thing. One can only give a perfect score to the very last competitor just in case the next competitor does a little better.

Crucial deals

Webpromo is back, so get that %15.

When you buy from Crucial, you're buying the same top-quality RAM that leading PC makers install in the systems they sell. As a division of Micron, Crucial is the only place consumers can buy memory upgrades direct from the manufacturer. And that's the truth.

Chaintech 7VJL KT333 review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 8, 2002 at 2:01:09 PM
Overclockers NZ has a review of a Chaintech KT333 board.

ChainTech Apogee is a stable motherboard with loads of overclocking features and accessories. This is not a bad entry for ChainTech but it will not earn any awards from me. The overclocking potential is severally reduced with the use of 100/133/166 jumpers. The performance of the board is below other KT-333 boards tested.

Lindows preview

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 8, 2002 at 1:57:38 PM
Hightechmods has a preview of the Linux/Windows hybrid.

The problems I encountered are very common. I actually went to the Lindows.com Tech support area and the Insiders forum and searched for answers for those specific errors so this review would be more realistic. This installation took 42 minutes. After knowing what needs to be changed on your particular computer to get LindowsOS to install, from start to finish you can be surfing the internet in approximately 7 minutes. Installing the OS is really a no brainer. Very little user intervention is required. I don't know how many readers of this review noticed in the installation screen shots that you don't have the ability to select partitions or enter users. Lindows will only load on partition1 of the first hard disk and everything is run as root. Sure takes the *nix out of Linux.

Chip-Con's Vapor Phase cooling review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 8, 2002 at 1:48:17 PM
3DVelocity has a review of the latest vapor phase (read: low temps) cooling.

Also I have yet to focus on the noise levels of this system, primarily because there are none! Throw those Delta's away because the only real noise is at startup where the main unit's fan is most active. Thankfully Prometeia's fan is only activated when needed most and will auto adjust to a slower speed when not needed. Even when the fan is rotating at full speed, the noise is a lot quieter than a standard case with three case fans. There is a whine from fans at times but it's never intrusive. I'm very impressed at just how quiet this system really is.

PayPal will continue to offer its service as an independent brand, eBay said. PayPal, which went public earlier this year, allows consumers to make and accept payments over the Internet without using a credit card. The bulk of its business comes from eBay auctions.

Gainward Ti 4200 review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 7, 2002 at 4:59:34 PM
AMDWorld has a review of a Gainward Ti 4200.

To wrap up this article it all boils down to cost and what you get in comparison to other manufacturer offerings and whilst the Gainward NVIDIA® GeForce4 PowerPack Ultra/650TV Golden Sample TI-4200 is not busting out with bundles and extra add-ons it does give you an optimized product for all needs in today's hardware computing arena. You have to ask why buy a TI-4600 when something along the lines of the Gainward NVIDIA® GeForce4 PowerPack Ultra/650TV Golden Sample TI-4200 can offer something close as it can get at almost half the average selling price.

Powerstrip 3.20 build 302

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 6, 2002 at 9:36:54 PM
Powerstrip has a new build out.

PowerStrip 3.20 provides advanced, multi-monitor, programmable hardware support to a wide range of graphics cards - from the venerable Matrox Millennium I to the latest Radeon 8500DV and GeForce4 Ti4600. It is in fact the only program of its type to support multiple graphics cards from multiple chipset vendors, simultaneously, under every Windows operating system from Windows 95 to XP. A simple menu that pops up from the system tray provides access to some 500 controls over your display hardware, including sophisticated color correction tools, period level adjustments over screen geometry, and driver independent clock controls.

1,580 to be more exact.

Over 600 people face the axe at the company's Compaq plant in Erskine, Scotland. The rest will go from various other UK locations, including Livingstone in Scotland and London and Reading in England..

The INQwell also has a new layout. Seems like it is layout changing season.

DFI NB76-EC review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 5, 2002 at 8:03:57 PM
Hexus has a review of a DFI i845G action.

So overall, a thumbs up all round but there are certainly areas which DFI could improve on. A range of overclockers BIOS's would shoot their products right up there for example. Lots of Vcore and mem voltage adjust and DFI have a winner in the eyes of the enthusiast. Maybe they'll consider it in the future and we'll certainly put it to them when we talk about future products.

US Gov't considering Max OS X

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 5, 2002 at 8:00:31 PM
Why not, it runs unix basically.

The testing process could take about a year. Apple needs to jump in now, however, as new regulations require U.S. government agencies to purchase IT products that have either been certified or are in the process of being certified. In the wake of of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the government has taken a much harder look at computer security.

2600 doesn't appeal

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 5, 2002 at 7:58:51 PM
The Hacker Quarterly doesn't want to appeal in the linking of DVD Copy protection code.

The major movies studios sued 2600 in 1999 as part of a broad legal effort to stop the distribution of code that can be used to playback DVDs on computers, known as DeCSS. Developed by open-source programmers, DeCSS quickly spread online and eventually morphed into gestures of protest against Hollywood's legal attacks to restrain it, appearing in poems, songs, T-shirts and ties.

Asian market will pick up PC sales

Poster: Aron Schatz

But other stuff may not be so hot. Hey, I got an idea, why don't we all throw away our computers and buy new ones! Wait, I do that already.

Four sectors anticipated to spend heavily on computers across Asia are government, education, financial and small- and medium-sized enterprises, Tay said, adding that a fair amount of year 2000 replacements will also contribute to the PC industry.

Ohh, The old forum got completely wiped out (My bad Sad).

By the way, most of the site doesn't work. The articles and news are the only things that are peachy, as is the forum... I'll be working to convert the rest of the site over by the end of the day.

New layout and forums coming today...

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 5, 2002 at 3:54:13 PM
The new layout will be rolling in here, so expect problems with stuff for much of the week. I urge people no to post stuff in the forum while the update is underway, you'll get a news post when its all done. I have been thinking about converting the old messages over to the new forums, but it will be too hard. What I will do is leave the old board up for a week or so (there may be errors though) so you can archive any msgs you want.

America's Army

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on July 5, 2002 at 4:40:03 AM
The much-anticipated FREE game developed by the United States Army (yes, the actual army) is available for download today, though very hard to obtain as nearly every site with it available for download is low on bandwidth because of this. If you pre-ordered your free CD, it should arrive within 7 days, I've been told. Visit AmericasArmy.com for more info and to get linked to a download site. I was able to download it, but since I can't get the frequencies set properly on my pc, I've been unable to test it, but it looks cool Smile
