Poster: Warlock
Posted on August 7, 2002 at 5:36:35 AM
You say yeah right. DDR at a PC3500 speed grade? 433Mhz of DDR goodness? Well a company called Geil is selling this blazing fast version of DDR right now! Can it top RDRAM's bandwidth? Check out the review over at Burnout PC and see for yourself.

Borg mentality coming here?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 6, 2002 at 1:51:33 PM
I'm all for having enhancements to myself, but not at the cost of creating a hivemind.

Quote

The report thinks big when it comes to peering beyond the next two decades to the rest of the 21st century. Taking visionaries such as Ray Kurzweil seriously, it imagines robots so advanced they may deserve political rights, building surfaces that automatically change shape and color to adjust to the weather, and the prospect of personality uploads that make death itself ambiguous.

Merging human consciousness with machines is tied to another mind-boggling concept: brain-to-brain connections. The report discusses the possibility of "local groups of linked enhanced individuals" as well as "a global collective intelligence."

Now I'm scared.

Bantam USA's BA350 Mp3 Player

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 6, 2002 at 12:37:34 AM
Reviewnation has another review today (Wow amazing!), this time of an MP3 player from Bantam. Didn't they make CDroms for laptops also?

Quote

After not doing to swell with their BA250 series Mp3 player, Bantam decided to go back to the drawing board and re-develop their thoughts, and have came up with what they call the BA350 series Mp3 player, which at a glace looks simply amazing! I've tested and used this thing non-stop since I received the product from Bantam, now lets see if Bantam is going to take control of the industry or if they they are going to sink like so many of the other companies out there..

Lazer LED review

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 6, 2002 at 12:33:24 AM
Reviewnation (wonder what they do...) has a review of the tri-ledded Lazer LED from Crazy PC.
I was checking out one of my favorite PC Mod sites the other day, (Crazy PC,) and came across a new product that looked like the brightest Neon light I have ever seen. I thought it would make a great item to review for all our ReviewNation readers who have a window in their tower or are looking into getting a tower with a window in it, so I contacted Crazy PC to see if they would send me a blue Lazer Light to compare to my blue cold cathode light, and they did. (They sent me a green one, which is okay, but a blue one would have been a better comparison.) Nonetheless, you will see in the following review it does not matter what color Lazer Light they sent me. I have been using a cold cathode light for about 6 months, and it has served me well… until now.[/QUOTE

Freaking Fast Computers 2.4Ghz PC

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 5, 2002 at 8:03:14 PM
Warp2Search has testing the 2.4Ghz System from FFC. Why it is only at 2.4Ghz is beyond me...
Freaking Fast Computers has built a decent and fast PC with this system. High quality components from renowned manufacturers were used which results in good overall performance. I have been using the system for about two weeks now and it proved to be absolutely stable in gaming, networking and under normal working conditions. Despite some small cosmetic glitches like the case badge, two missing top fan screws and the misspelled Windows XP product activation number in the manual I have little to argue about. However since this is a watercooled system the noise emission level is not below a conventional air cooled system because the top radiator fan is rather loud. Overclocking is also not the strength of the Freaking Fast Computers P4 2.4Ghz watercooled system which can partially be explained because it is an Intel / RDRAM based system. However I expected at least a better overclocking potential of the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 from Visiontek. And finally the price: Yes you can have all components in there for less. Sure you could assemble that PC yourself. But FFC is taking care of their customers as I myself experienced in various contacts with them. You also got an extended warranty and some nice gadgets along the way. And you can start computing right away without touching a screwdriver…[/QUOTE

Memory Heatsink/Spreader Review

Poster: Warlock
Posted on August 4, 2002 at 11:59:02 PM
There is a small review of the Nexus heatspreader for memory modules over at System Cooling. In the past I've felt that memory cooling was pretty much a waste of time, except in the interest of the geek factor or just plainly to make it look nicer with all the fancy colors out there. But with the advent of ever faster ram, heat is fast becoming a problem along with higher spinning hard drives, GPU's, and mobo chipsets and I have to agree with the reviewer on this statement-

Many of us are on a constant search for products that have the potential to help us cool our ever hotter, computer systems. Sometimes we find out that some products are mere gadgets designed to lighten our wallets and deliver nothing to enhance our cooling abilities. That is why we asked the question "Gadget or Effective Tool"; in this article we hope to answer that question!!

Quote

Motherboard makers noted that VIA and SiS are expected to enjoy more stable product ASPs (average selling prices) this quarter, with slightly rising demand from Europe and China and shipments of new products. At the end of July, SiS started shipping its Pentium 4-supporting SiS648 and SiS650GL chipsets and Xabre400 graphics chips in small scale, while it has also begun volume deliveries of its Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)-based KT400.

One group tries to break the view of the hacker into a nice and peaceful security consultant (Basically).

Quote

GhettoHackers is one of several groups trying to change the way society views hackers, as stereotypical malcontents interested only in crashing systems, stealing credit cards and releasing computer viruses. While cybercrime arrests make headlines regularly, groups like GhettoHackers are aiming to help those curious about information security get hands-on experience without doing harm to others.

The E and G variants of Klez were by far the most common infections in July, according to lists released Thursday by antivirus software and services companies Central Command, Sophos and Kaspersky Labs.

The remarkably durable versions of the Klez worm surfaced early this year and quickly munched their way into the record books, overtaking SirCam as the most active computer pest in recent history.

No surprise here, I spend more money online each year.

Quote

The study, conducted by the Online Publishers Association (OPA) and Web measurement company ComScore Networks, showed that U.S. consumers spent $300 million to access Web content in the first quarter of this year. That's a 155 percent increase from the same period a year ago. During the 2002 quarter, 12.4 million U.S. consumers opened their wallets for content, up from 5.3 million last year.

NV30 (Geforce 5) Not tapped out yet

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 1, 2002 at 1:36:57 AM
Tapped out means that the hardware can get no better... But we have this from [H] that says that the NV30 is NOT yet tapped out!

Quote

"It should be available for holiday season" J. Huang

"Has the NV30 taped out yet?" Analyst

"Historically Nvidia done a good job with tapeouts etc... We're in the process of wrapping it up" J. Huang

"So it has not been taped out yet?" Analyst

"We're in the process of wrapping it up so the answer is not" J. Huang

Now, while this may be taken many ways, we talked with NVIDIA and they again reiterated that they will make their Fall release. Also there is something we have to remember, NVIDIA has historically went 90 - 100 days from tape out to product release with all their cards so they could very well meet their expected release date.

SiS 658 with RDRam support!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 31, 2002 at 1:53:10 PM
I just got this PR from SiS. I just want to show you a few pieces...
Core logic and Graphics Chip leader SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) today launched its new chipset, the SiSR658, which was developed specifically for top-of-line desktop PCs and workstations. Using RDRAM® memory, the SiSR658 offers 1.5 to 2 times more data transmission bandwidth than competing memory solutions (e.g. DDR), allowing users to benefit from a faster and smoother computing experience. The SiSR658 chipset fully meets the needs of users who have a high demand for a multitasking and greatly enhanced work performance.

The SiSR658 is the first chipset in the world that supports Dual RDRAM at 1066 MHz. The SiSR658 flexible memory interface supports all device configurations, single Channel module systems, and up to 4GB memory capacity. Furthermore, with its proprietary MuTIOL® technology, the SiSR658 can easily achieve up to 1GB per second northbridge-to-southbridge front side bus bandwidth transmission. This technology allows systems to take full advantage of the high performance, low power consumption and high compatibility characteristics of the SiSR658.[/QUOTE:102814159
