PCI-X picks up steam

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 16, 2003 at 8:45:29 PM
The successor to regular PCI is much faster. It will replace the current spec sooner or later. Too bad PCI-Expess is a competing tech.

Quote

IBM and Hewlett-Packard will start incorporating PCI-X into their servers in 2004, according the companies' top Intel server technologists. The move will be possible through the use of new chipsets, which join processors to memory and input-output systems such as PCI, from Broadcom subsidiary ServerWorks.

Sun not using Opterons

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on March 15, 2003 at 9:29:27 PM
This was very suprising and kills a lot of rumors. They will be releasing their new hardware, but no AMDs included.

Quote

To counter the threat of the upcoming 64 bit Opteron and the Itanium family, SUN's tactic is two fold. In the Summer of 2003 we will (finally!) see the USIIIi platform which should be priced very aggressively. SUN believes the USIIIi is a much more cost effective solution than it's USIII platform. The integrated L2-cache (instead of big off die SRAM caches) and memory controller make the CPU a lot cheaper to produce. And the platform will use high volume interfaces and busses such as IDE and SCSI harddisks instead of the more expensive fibre channel harddisks. The USIIIi platform will also use standard DDR RAM. While SUN is very late with the USIIIi (low end), the USIV, their next dual core high end CPU project seems to be doing well and should be on the market at the end of this year.

Are broadband Windows users at risk?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 15, 2003 at 1:50:28 PM
Nice article at PC World. Do you feel safe?

Quote

Windows uses the SMB protocol to share files and printer resources with other computers. The two versions of the operating system referred to in the CERT bulletin transfer information via TCP/IP. These systems are vulnerable to attacks using tools such as W32/Deloder, GT-bot, sdbot, and W32/Slackor. Older operating systems which share SMB information differently are not vulnerable, according to CERT/CC.

Yahoo gets paid programming

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 15, 2003 at 1:40:55 PM
If you want some video on Yahoo, you might have to pay for it. Yahoo has a great business model. I'm surprised they even make money.

Quote

Yahoo Platinum, as previously reported, will feature content from News Corp.'s Fox network, Viacom's CBS and Walt Disney's ABCNews.com, according to sources close to the portal giant. The service will carry a monthly fee of $9.95 or a higher charge of $16.95 for a sports package.

Intel's wireless delight

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 14, 2003 at 3:44:07 PM
Intel it totally pushing wireless. I saw an 8 page insert in the USA today yesterday. That's a load of cash.

Quote

For Intel's prospective customers, PC manufacturers, the Wi-Fi debate centers on price versus performance. The Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 network connection, the wireless module inside Centrino, includes all the packaging and software needed for making a wireless connection, such as a radio that can send and receive data over spectrum dedicated to the 802.11b wireless standard. The 802.11b standard uses the 2.4GHz radio band.

Interoperability is scarce in IM

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 14, 2003 at 6:07:43 AM
The chief problem is that IM is not cross company. Switch to trillian and get everything in one. It works in Linux too.

Quote

To Sprint and many other companies, instant messaging has evolved from a teenage fad to a valuable communications tool that is central to everyday business. Companies are using IM not only to send real-time messages, but also to collaborate on projects, exchange data and create networks linking all types of Internet devices.

New mobile graphics chip

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 13, 2003 at 3:43:04 PM
ATI and nVidia are making new graphics chips based on their latest in 3D. Radeon 9000 and Geforce FX lines.

Quote

"Overdrive," a package of hardware and software improvements in the 9200 and 9600, allows those chips to run at higher-than-rated speeds if conditions permit--essentially an automated version of overclocking, said Trupty Vora, a product marketing engineer at ATI. Thermal sensors in the chips monitor the temperature inside the laptop and throttle down the chips' speed if things get too hot.

AMD debuts new mobile chips

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 13, 2003 at 6:09:49 AM
Not to be totally outdone by Intel, AMD is releasing new mobile variants of the Athlon XP. It is still a desktop chip in a laptop.

Quote

The Barton chips will be sold with model numbers of 2200+, 2400+ and 2500+. (The performance number is roughly equivalent to the clock speed of Intel's Pentium 4. A 2500+ would thus exhibit the same sort of performance as a 2.5GHz Pentium 4.) Hewlett-Packard will likely come out with a notebook using the Barton chip sometime in the first half, AMD said.

Bad porn on P2P

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 13, 2003 at 6:05:03 AM
Looks as though the government and some watch groups want to introduce filters to KaZaA and the like. No child porn, or other stuff. I like this idea.

Quote

The GAO used two techniques to identify pornography: evaluating file names and viewing the actual image files. "We used 12 keywords known to be associated with child pornography on the Internet to search for child pornography image files," wrote Linda Koontz, director of information management issues for the GAO. "We identified 1,286 items, each with a title and file name, determining that 543 (about 42 percent) were associated with child pornography images. Of the remaining, 34 percent were classified as adult pornography and 24 percent as non-pornographic."

Court to hear appeal on banning games

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 12, 2003 at 9:25:30 PM
Wow, I didn't even realize there was a ban on voilent games in a part of the country. People in St Louis, you better not ruin it for everyone.

Quote

Over the last two years, violent games have dominated the marketplace, led by criminal adventure games "Grand Theft Auto 3'' and "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,'' which were the top sellers of 2001 and 2002. The IDSA's Maynard argued that the St. Louis ordinance went too far in its goal of protecting children from violence and that the voluntary ratings system already in place was a sufficient safeguard.

BTW, when Vice City comes out for the PC, expect a review on it. I hope it'll actually run well on the PC... unlike GTA3.

New ATI Catalysts v3.2

I have the press release, but the driver pages still show v3.1, so you're just going to have to wait until they update the pages. UPDATE: Seems the PR was for the multimedia center only... But why mention the CATs 3.2?

Here is the PR.

In addition to the new capabilities for the RADEON-based desktop graphics products, CATALYST 3.2 with MULTIMEDIA CENTER 8.1 delivers advanced features to the many ALL-IN-WONDER® users -- from the current best-selling ALL-IN-WONDER® 9700 PRO to the long-standing ALL-IN-WONDER® RADEON™. These capabilities include MULTVIEW™ for dual TV tuner input that provides Picture-in-Picture support, closed caption database search, VIDEOSOAP™ filtering for personal video recording captures and frame reconstruction, as well as new file management options in Multimedia Library.

Red Hat changes and cuts

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 12, 2003 at 5:28:17 PM
Red Hat is changing the name of its high end Linux solutions. Enterprise AS/ES, for the high and low ends.

Quote

Red Hat is becoming increasingly aggressive with its high-end Advanced Server software plans, but the company wasn't successful in persuading companies to pay $1,500 to $2,500 per year for a subscription to use the Linux version on low-end servers. The new Enterprise Linux ES product costs $349 or $800 per year, depending on support levels, De Visser said.

The figures suggest that racing through virtual streets in a stolen car or going on pretend spy mission has become a firm favourite among thrill-seekers. In 2002 in the UK, more money was spent on games than on video rental or on going to the cinema.

New Internet speed record set

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 12, 2003 at 7:24:09 AM
Well, the porn downloads are getting faster. 923 mb/s, wow.

Quote

A new Internet speed record has been set by scientists. Using the Internet2 network, scientists were able to send data from Sunnyvale, California in the U.S. to Amsterdam, Holland at a speed of 923 megabits per second. The Internet2 network is a network operated by a consortium of 200 universities which are exploring the next generation of the Internet. 6.7 gigabytes of data, the equivalent of two DVDs ("four hours of DVD-quality movies") was sent in less then a minute over a distance of 6,800 miles.

Pentium-M to take off

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 12, 2003 at 6:54:51 AM
It seems as though the Centrino will take off (as expected). This is the first mobile chip of its kind.

[QUOTE]"The 1.6GHz Pentium-M definitely outperforms a 2GHz Pentium 4. It is even comparable to something like a 2.4GHz," said Robert Enochs, product manager for the T-Series of ThinkPads at IBM, which is coming out with three new notebooks. "We're getting considerably better battery life with the system…The Pentium-M runs a lot cooler than the Pentium 4."[/QUOTE

In hardware security scrapped

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 11, 2003 at 9:08:16 PM
For the time being at least. Consumers once again command with the all-mighty dollar.

Quote

Chipmakers have not completely abandoned efforts to create such copy protection features. But developers now say that they're ready to move ahead with what some call a second best alternative in order to feed surging demand for chips bound for new multimedia devices such as MP3 players, cell phones and PDAs. This so-called soft coding--putting antipiracy rules into software that is more accessible to users--is slower and less secure, but lets companies adapt to rapid changes in the market more easily, developers say.

Gigabyte Radeon 9700 Review

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on March 10, 2003 at 9:33:39 PM
I don't see reason enough to get this card since it's so much slower than ATIs, but read this and make your own decision.

Quote

The card does come with a great software bundle, definitely more than you'd get from ATI. But in all honesty, if you are shopping for a Radeon9700, make sure you are getting a Pro. Gigabyte does produce a Pro Model which is definitely worth your consideration.

HP Printer consulting

Poster: Subjugation
Posted on March 10, 2003 at 9:27:21 PM
I wonder what this will mean for smaller PC consulting firms. HP is going to try to pull in some of that side of it's printer market.

Quote

The effort is part of HP's strategy to expand its printing business beyond the types of tasks currently handled by HP printers. Imaging and Printing boss Vymoesh Joshi is fond of repeating that only 4 percent of printing work is done on the types of printers HP makes, leaving 96 percent of the market still to go.

Notebook storage gets an increase

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 10, 2003 at 9:05:16 PM
Wow, look at the storage on mobile drives now. 80GB and soon higher. Lot's of porn on those.

Quote

Fujitsu created the 80GB device by increasing the drive's areal density, or the amount of data that a hard-drive platter--a small, thin disk--can store per square inch. Hard drives hold data on one or more platters, and the data is written by a special head mounted on an arm that hovers above the spinning platter that resembles a miniature record player.

Deloder worm clearing the way for a DDoS attack

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 10, 2003 at 8:29:03 PM
Damn DDoS attacks, the same that brang down this site a few weeks ago. Win2k/XP/2003 are affected. Figures, the newest OSes are affected.

Quote

It exploits a loophole in TCP port 445, otherwise known as the Microsoft-DS port, to log on to remote machines as an administrator using a fixed list of passwords.

This worm runs on Windows 2000, XP, and the Server 2003 family. It usually arrives as the file Dvldr32.exe. When executed on the said platforms, it extracts the valid network utility, PSEXEC.EXE by SysInternals, into the directory where it is executed.
