Spam killers

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 28, 2003 at 7:49:22 PM
The top three names on the internet have teamed up to fight off the killer meat infestation. This might actually be good. Let's hope that they can stop at least some of it.

Quote

America Online, Yahoo and Microsoft on Monday sketched a broad outline that calls for technical changes to e-mail to make it more difficult to send the widely reviled messages. Among the steps are plans to hinder spammers from creating multiple fraudulent e-mail accounts in bulk and to determine the real identity of the senders.

SiS spinning off graphics division

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 28, 2003 at 1:54:11 PM
This is interesting. The spin off will handle off of SiS' graphics stuff, and be based in Taiwan. I don't think ATI and nVidia need to worry much. The Xabre is really not a good competitor.
Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) has decided to spin off its graphics chip division (multimedia product division) as a new subsidiary in May or June under the name of Tu Chiang Technology (transliterated from Chinese), according to sources. Tu Chiang would be Taiwan’s first graphics chip design firm.[/QUOTE

Watch out file traders

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 26, 2003 at 3:34:15 PM
Just because a lawsuit said the file swapping software was legal, doesn't get you off the hook. The copyright monkeys may try to come after the individual user.

Quote

In fact, the ruling could accelerate the labels' plans to go after individual users, especially when coupled with a decision Thursday in a separate case that gives them more power to unmask the identity of individual file swappers. In that decision, a judge said Internet service provider Verizon had 14 days to turn over the name of a subscriber accused of offering music files for download using the Kazaa file-swapping service.

Linus on the DRM

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 25, 2003 at 9:50:10 PM
The DRM, the thing that Pallidium supports, has some strong debates in the open source community. Linus says OK to the DRM, as it has good uses. But, since Linux can be edited, it can always be remove regardless.

Quote

"There is zero technical difference. It's only a matter of intent--and even the intent will be a matter of interpretation," Torvalds wrote. "This is why I refuse to disallow even the 'bad' kinds of uses--because not allowing them would automatically also mean that 'good' uses aren't allowed."

Fileswapping tools legal

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 25, 2003 at 9:32:34 PM
A major blow to copywrite nutcases and their DMCA. Filesharing tools are legal, and are compared to VCRs and the like. Finally, some sense.

Quote

"Defendants distribute and support software, the users of which can and do choose to employ it for both lawful and unlawful ends," Wilson wrote in his opinion, released Friday. "Grokster and StreamCast are not significantly different from companies that sell home video recorders or copy machines, both of which can be and are used to infringe copyrights."

Mini Linux PC

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 24, 2003 at 10:14:09 PM
This is amazing. A mini-PC that looks like it would fit anywhere. I'm trying to build a HTPC around the Eden right now.

Quote

The device is slightly larger and heavier than a CD-ROM drive found on a standard desktop PC, so it may not be the smallest desktop computer on the market. However, it is likely to be the smallest based on a standard mainboard design, as other tiny PCs use specially designed, one-off mainboards.

Cable wins over DSL in speed

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 24, 2003 at 2:04:01 PM
Cable is great, and I agree it is faster than DSL. But, there are some problems that cable has over DSL. Cable is a monolopy. Ask yourself if you can get another cable companies programming hmm?

Quote

The study said cable modems were 50 percent faster on average than DSL connections. According to data tabulated during February, Cablevision reportedly had the fastest connections, averaging 800kbps, or 13kbps above the industry average. Comcast came in second at 794kbps, Cox in third with 688kbps and Adelphia in last with 575kbps. Time Warner Cable, the nation's second-largest cable television network, was not included in the study.

Microsoft IE and Outlook flaws

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 24, 2003 at 3:57:15 AM
Yet another flaw in the IE/OE core. IE 5 and 6 are affected and are critical flaws.

Quote

so-called buffer overflow vulnerability, which an attacker can exploit by sending more input to a program than the application expects, could allow the owner of a Web site to run code on the person's computer. Buffer overflows are an old type of vulnerability that still crop up frequently in programs. The flaw occurs in a component of Internet Explorer that delivers Web addresses to the browser from other sources--for instance, if a person clicked on a URL in an e-mail or a Word document.

AMD Athlon XP isn't forgotten yet

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 24, 2003 at 3:52:56 AM
Chipset makers still are making new chipsets for the Athlon XP. New 400 Mhz FSB chipset (native) will be appearing soon from all companies. Lots of competition means better prices.

Quote

VIA Technologies, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and Nvidia all plan to introduce chipsets supporting the Barton-core, 400MHz FSB Athlon XP processors. VIA will add a new KT600 chipset, while SiS is expected to join the competition with its SiS748. Nvidia will launch an updated product based on its nForce2, said Drew Henry, company senior director of platform product management, in an earlier phone interview with DigiTimes.

Datacasting returns

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 23, 2003 at 8:13:10 PM
Datacasting is when you take signal and piggyback another one off of it. This technology is making a comeback as it would seem.

Quote

At present, FM radio supports datacasting over so-called subcarrier frequencies, which can deliver information at about 1.5 kilobits per second. That's sufficient for relatively light data needs, such as displaying a radio station's number on an LED screen or sending weather information to a digital watch--but little else. Yet, forthcoming digital enhancements could supercharge radio datacasting, providing feeds of up to 300kbps.

AMD cuts prices

The Opteron CPU has made AMD cut prices on most of its Athlon XP chips. Good news if your in the market to buy.
The most significant price cut was seen in the company’s top-end Athlon XP 3000+, now quoted at only US$325. Prices of other high-end processors were also cut by more than 30% while prices at the low-end fell less than 30%.[/QUOTE

Intel x86-64

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 23, 2003 at 1:19:41 PM
Intel has made some emulation software that actually runs 32bit programs fast on its Itanium CPUs. This isn't good news for AMD. But since AMD has the price on their side, I guess it won't be that bad.

Quote

The new software approach, called the IA-32 Execution Layer and code-named btrans, will give the forthcoming 1.5GHz Itanium 2 the ability to run 32-bit software about as fast as a 1.5GHz Xeon MP, Intel spokeswoman Barbara Grimes confirmed.

Supply low in graphics

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 22, 2003 at 2:34:26 PM
ATI and nVidia are both having problems getting chips made for their products. Demand is very high, even on the top end product. I'm surprised, at over $300, I wouldn't dare buy a video card for that much. And all the review sites that say otherwise all get them for free.
Limited supply of Nvidia’s GeForce FX 5800 (NV30) and GeForce FX 5600 (NV31) series chips has pushed some demand to ATI, card makers said. However, a shortage of ATI’s Radeon 9700 and Radeon 9500 chips has been reported and output of its new-generation Radeon 9800 (R350) series has also failed to meet demand.[/QUOTE:105104006

Recyclable computers

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 22, 2003 at 2:30:48 PM
The way of the future. No, I don't mean disposable types, I mean that when a computer is obselete (like the second you buy it), it can be easily recycled. Imagine all the useless parts that are left in the garbage. Yeah, every little bit helps. Check out the corn printer as well.

Quote

The upside is that by examining the recycling process, computer makers are starting to change the way they build their gear, making it easier to dispose of the volumes of obsolete systems--and a handful of potentially toxic ingredients they contain--in an environmentally friendly way. Although many PC makers have a long way to go with their recycling efforts, some of the lessons learned are already showing up in new designs.

4 way Opteron

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 22, 2003 at 1:44:54 AM
AMD is looking to strike down Intel in the server market. There still is a HUGE difference in Mhz between the two companies. Don't expect it to be cheap either.

Quote

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker--in conjunction with server start-up Newisys--has created a four-processor server, code-named Quartet, that will hit the market later this quarter, said Ben Williams, director of the server and workstation business segment at AMD. The chipmaker created the basic reference design. Newisys works with various computer makers to devise implementations of Quartet for commercial release.

Intel fixes chip 'anomalies'

Poster: smartass083
Posted on April 21, 2003 at 7:43:18 PM
Intel fixed the problem found in their new 3 ghz processors. These chips are gonna be awesome, I'd love to get my hands on one of them.

Quote

The 3GHz chip was supposed to come out last week, but Intel discovered an anomaly with the processor in its labs on the eve of the launch and subsequently delayed the introduction. The problem has now been permanently fixed with a BIOS (basic input/output system) software patch, said a company representative, and the chip is shipping in volume quantities.

Intel chip prices fall

Like I said in an earlier post, Intel has cut prices on its CPUs. Now would be the time to buy.

Quote

The price of Intel's Pentium 4 microprocessor running at 3 gigahertz was cut 32 percent to $401 from $589. The price of the mobile Pentium 4 chip running at 2.4 gigahertz was cut 38 percent to $348. Intel last made price cuts in February.
