Personalized resource empowers patients with knowledge about the condition and its treatment options

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., May 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PharmaDerm, a division of Nycomed US Inc., announced today that is has launched AK Connect, a patient resource program that contains information tailored to different types of patients about diagnosis, symptoms, treatment and support for actinic keratosis (AK). Now physicians who treat patients with AK have a new resource to help better inform patients about this potentially serious skin condition that affects millions of Americans.(1,2)

The website provides patients with information about the importance of staying on therapy if diagnosed with AK, being aware of changes on their skin (i.e., early diagnosis), and helpful information on protecting the skin from AK lesions.

About Actinic Keratosis (AK)

Actinic keratosis, also known as solar keratosis, is a skin condition characterized by dry, scaly patches (lesions) that can appear on any area of the body that has been exposed to strong sunlight over a period of years.(3) AK is considered pre-cancerous and, if left untreated, may progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), a type of skin cancer that can be life-threatening.(3,4) Approximately 10 percent of AK lesions may progress to SCC.(2) AK lesions usually respond well to treatment, which ranges from topical creams and gels that can be applied at home to procedures that are performed in the doctor's office. With early treatment, the cure rate for AKs often exceeds 90 percent.(5) Regular self-examinations and screenings by a dermatologist can help detect AK in the earliest and most treatable stages.

PRECAUTIONS: Solaraze (diclofenac sodium) Gel should be used with caution in patients with active gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding and severe renal or hepatic impairments.  Solaraze should not be applied to open skin wounds, infections, or exfoliative dermatitis.  It should not be allowed to come in contact with the eyes (please see accompanying full Prescribing Information).

WARNINGS: As with other NSAIDs, anaphylactoid reactions may occur in patients without prior exposure to diclofenac.  Diclofenac sodium should be given with caution to patients with the aspirin triad (please see accompanying full Prescribing Information).

The Medco Pharmacy mobile app, available for download in V CAST Apps, provides information about out-of-pocket costs for any prescription drug and lower-cost options specific to a person's prescription drug plan, as well as drug interaction alerts based on the patient's prescription history - even if the patient is treated by several doctors or fills prescriptions at many different pharmacies.  Once registered at medco.com, patients will have their complete medication history and drug plan at their fingertips and can discuss cost-saving options, drug safety or coverage issues with their medical professional, even before they leave the doctor's office.

The Medco Pharmacy mobile app, offering unique healthcare functionality, consists of three key features:

    --  My Rx Choices: Delivers on-demand, personalized out-of-pocket costs for
        any prescription medication and lower-cost options based on the member's
        pharmacy plan coverage, as well as for eligible dependents; informs the
        registered members who can share the information with their physicians
        or pharmacist if there are any health or drug plan rules that require a
        physician authorization before the drug can be dispensed; and provides
        alerts to potential drug interaction risks associated with the current

Using less than 45 milliwatts of power, Masimo MS-2040 boards are available in both a double-stack version (pictured) with dimensions of 1.8" x 1.15" x 0.46" and single-stack version with dimensions of 2.0" x 1.38" x 0.36".  The small size and reduced power consumption of Masimo MS-2040 boards enhance integration into next-generation portable medical devices that need to be smaller, lighter, and more mobile--consuming less than a third of the power without sacrificing accuracy during motion and low perfusion.

IBM and SARA Sign Collaboration Agreement on Petascale Computing

AMSTERDAM, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) and SARA, the Dutch National High Performance Computing and e-Science Support Center, today signed a joint research collaboration agreement focused on petascale computing. The agreement allows for joint research in a number of areas to enable applications to run on next generation petaflop supercomputers. The collaboration builds upon a long-standing relationship between SARA and IBM in the field of high-performance computing.

The currently deployed SARA Huygens cluster with IBM POWER 575 technology and an IBM POWER 755 test system will be used as major platforms to support the research. Areas of research include scaling key applications in the Dutch research community to support a large number of cores, new programming tools, Linux system performance and tuning and energy efficient technologies - all essential for petaflop systems.

Hundreds of scientists in the Netherlands make use of the national supercomputing facility Huygens at SARA to tackle important scientific and societal challenges like climate change, water management, improvement of medical care, nanotechnology and green energy.

Rural Kansas Health Center Uses Free Mobile Tracking to Improve Patients' Mental Health

ARLINGTON, Va., May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In January 2011, Dr. April Foreman, a rural licensed psychologist, with a small group of committed Kansas mental health professionals, began tracking their patients' moods through their mobile phones.  Working with HealthCentral (http://www.HealthCentral.com), the leading collection of condition-specific health and wellness sites, Dr. Foreman started using Mood 24/7 (http://www.mood247.com), a mobile and online tool to help track daily moods, developed by HealthCentral based on technology licensed from Johns Hopkins University.  Along with her team at Four County Mental Health Center, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Foreman has been helping patients and their treatment team use the data that patients collect about their moods to respond to their feelings of depression.

Xbox Update Woes

The upcoming Xbox LIVE update has essentially broken some consoles. In a small number of consoles, it's made some retail discs unreadable and Microsoft is proactively contacting users with the problem with an offer to replace the consoles. The update supports a new disk format.

I was actually a part of the Beta for this and I encountered a major problem. Microsoft handled it pretty well. I was contacted by phone to get all of the details and the issue was worked out pretty quickly. The only reason I mention it is because I'm sure Microsoft is facing a bit of criticism for this, but in my experience, they've handled things the best they can.

The XGD3 format will allow for additional storage space on a game disc, and will provide additional levels of copy production.
