Sam's Club® Enhances Member Experience with Technology
Wi-Fi, Smart Phone App and 3D TV Available Soon
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Aug. 10 -- As part of its commitment to deliver the best possible shopping experience, Sam's Club today announced plans to upgrade all of its U.S. locations with Wi-Fi by November. The announcement was delivered to more than 2,200 Sam's Club associates from the field and Home Office gathered at the Orlando Convention Center for the company's Annual Holiday Meeting, which showcases holiday merchandise and details plans for the season.
AT&T* will provide Wi-Fi to Sam's Club, which will allow its members greater use of their Wi-Fi enabled smart phones while shopping and enable associates to demo new IPTVs (internet TVs) as well as other internet connected devices in real time. Members may view their favorite web application such as Facebook(TM), Pandora(TM) or Vudo(TM) on large screen TVs to better understand how it would appear at home. In addition, hundreds of product reviews will now be accessible in-club as well to help members research potential purchases and access samsclub.com. Sam's Club is also upgrading to 1080p on HDTV displays, to provide an improved and more realistic picture quality. Sam's Club is the first warehouse club to offer live IPTV demos and carry a 1080p broadcast signal. Sam's Club expects to showcase 3D TVs in all locations and online next month.
"Our members are early adopters of technology and electronics, and we're excited to deliver an improved experience in our clubs," said Brian Cornell, president and CEO, Sam's Club. "This investment in connectivity allows us to showcase the high quality brands we offer in a new engaging way, provide an enhanced level of service and bring to life our promise to our members of Savings Made Simple."
Sam's Club also announced plans to offer a comprehensive smart phone application (app) for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Droid platforms. The app will include several features such as access to eValues, which are extra discounts loaded directly onto the Plus Membership cards, product information, member reviews and more. The Sam's Club app will make it easier for members to make the right choices on products throughout the club as well as foster greater member interaction with Sam's Club. The Sam's Club app will be available in September. Additional functionality details will be communicated soon.
The use of Sam's Club Tech Experts will be expanded as a result of the new capabilities to provide advanced training for in-club electronics associates. Sam's Club members may use Tech Experts 24/7 for free, by calling 877-758-4346 to get pre and post sale consultations on dozens of electronics items from computers to home theater systems. Members may also get information on items regardless of where they were purchased. In addition to providing no cost tech support, Tech Experts also can provide Sam's Club members with delivery and installation of electronics from basic to custom plans.
"These initiatives combined with additional associate training in Electronics will have a positive impact on every product category within the department," said Joe Hartsig, vice president, Electronics at Sam's Club. "We'll be able to enhance how our members experience electronics and deliver an increased level of service as technology choices become more complex."

'Free' Laptop Deals are Still Number one With Consumers
CAMBRIDGE, England, August 10, 2010-- Despite claims mobile broadband sales have dipped, and some bad press for
both mobile broadband speeds and the way the offers are marketed, so-called
'free' laptop deals are still number one with consumers, according to
Broadbandgenie.co.uk.
There has been much criticism of the sales term 'free laptops'. The cost
of the laptop is actually factored in to the monthly payments through the
contract, which normally spreads over two years. They are more like hire
purchase arrangements, but with little (if any) extra interest added, making
them a very tempting proposition for many.
Almost half of mobile broadband sales made after comparing products at
Broadband Genie are still laptop deals, despite the fact dongle-only and
pay-as-you-go deals are significantly cheaper. Deals where the laptop isn't
'free', but greatly reduced in price, are also proving extremely popular.
This figure has not changed significantly over the past year, despite the
fact broadband suppliers have pulled back from promoting and advertising
these deals, with some stopping them altogether. Despite this, the public's
desire for them is still very strong.
These figures are even more surprising when you account for the fact
mobile broadband networks tend to reject around 75 per cent of online
applications made for 'free' laptop deals, due to credit ratings not meeting
their required standards.
Broadband Genie editor Chris Marling said: "Mobile broadband is getting a
bit of a hammering from all sides at the moment. Average speeds are a
fraction of those advertised, and haven't gone up significantly for what
seems like an age - a far cry from the challenge to home broadband some
predicted.
"At the other end of the scale, the mobile has become a real challenger
on data. Smartphones are getting cheaper and more sophisticated at the same
time, while an ever growing abundance of 'apps' make surfing the web, getting
email and hooking up to social networking sites a breeze.
"But so-called 'free' laptop deals are still hugely popular with the
British public. In hard economic times, when savings have dried up, it's nice
to know you can get a great laptop, and get online, as soon as you sign the
deal - often with no initial financial outlay."

.CO Internet Announces Landrush Auctions for .CO Domain Names
Registry Reaffirms Commitment to Protect the Rights of Brand Owners
MIAMI, Aug. 10 -- .CO Internet S.A.S. (http://www.COinternet.co) announced that auctions will commence today for the more than 2,500 .CO domain applications that received multiple bids during the .CO "Landrush" phase. The auctions, which will take place over the course of the next four weeks, are only open to the individuals and entities that previously applied to register a specific .CO domain during the .CO Landrush phase. Eligible parties must register at http://www.COauctions.co in order to participate.
After only three weeks since its launch, nearly 410,000 .CO domain names have been registered in more than 180 countries worldwide. Among the more than 2,500 domains to be auctioned, the three with the most applicants are Slots.co, Insure.co and Denver.co. Other notable .CO domain names up for auction include Mexi.co, America.co, Betting.co, Vitamins.co, UsedCars.co, Happy.co, Ebook.co and Jackpot.co.
"As the .CO domain extension continues to generate global demand, I suspect we will see many exciting Landrush auctions for highly sought after domain names in the coming weeks," said Lori Anne Wardi, Director of Marketing at .CO Internet S.A.S. "These auctions are particularly important because they will help to define the nature of the secondary market for .CO domain names, in addition to further inspiring confidence among existing registrants about the value and long-term viability of the .CO name space."
.CO Registry Reaffirms Commitment to Create a Safe, Secure Name Space
As the registry operator of the .CO TLD, .CO Internet recognizes its responsibility to serve as a reliable trustee for the .CO domain and to manage the registry in a responsible way. As such, in an Open Letter to .CO Domain Registrants published yesterday, the .CO Registry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of brand owners and domain investors, and to creating a safer, more secure online experience for corporations, organizations, entrepreneurs and individuals from around the world.
In an effort to maximize compliance and minimize confusion, the open letter is intended to educate both existing .CO domain name registrants and Landrush auctioneers about the Registry's policies and safeguards against cyber-squatting and other domain name abuses.
"Naturally we are pleased about the incredible demand that .CO domain names have generated during the Landrush phase," said Eduardo Santoyo, Corporate VP and ccTLD Manager at .CO Internet. "That said, we want to make sure that both existing registrants and auction bidders fully understand the policies and mechanisms that have been put in place to protect their rights and the rights of brand owners world-wide."
These include, for example, certain mechanisms to prevent domain name abuse and to resolve domain disputes, such as the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), which was adopted by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and incorporated by reference into .CO domain registration agreements, as a means to quickly and efficiently settle domain name disputes between registrants and third parties.
As with registrants who bought domain names directly via domain registrars, those who buy domains in .CO Landrush auctions will be responsible for determining whether a potential registration may infringe on or violate someone else's legal rights. UDRP administrative proceedings are binding, and no refunds will be given under any circumstances -- regardless of the amount paid to secure the domain name, how the domain was acquired, and/or whether the registrant or bidder was aware or unaware of any infringement.
Santoyo continues, "By creating and actively enforcing these policies, we hope to make the .CO domain extension a safer, more secure online environment for all .CO domain users."
Prior to bidding on a domain name as part of the CO Landrush auction process, all bidders are urged to consult with a qualified trademark attorney.

China Grants Samplify Patents for Wireless Base Station Technologies
Chinese Government Forging Strong Business Relationships with Multinationals
SHANGHAI, Aug. 9 -- Samplify Systems, Inc., a leading provider of signal-compression technology, semiconductors, and solutions, today announced it has been granted its first patents in China. The following China utility model patents were granted by the China State Intellectual Property Office covering the use of compression on links that carry digital baseband or radio frequency (RF) signals in wireless base stations (BTS) manufactured or sold in China:
Patent Numbers
Apparatus for compression of baseband signals in base
-------------- transceiver systems
200920178152.5
Apparatus for compression of signals in base transceiver
200920178151.0 systems
Samplify's Prism IQ compression technology is now protected by these Chinese patents. Prism IQ significantly reduces the cost and capacity of fiber-optic connections, based on the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI), between the radio units and baseband units at the top and bottom of a wireless base station, respectively. As today's wireless environments migrate to 4G, Samplify's compression technology increases today's fiber-optic capacity from 10 Gbps to up to 20 Gbps for TD-LTE deployments in China.
According to Al Wegener, Samplify CTO and founder, "The deployment of TD-LTE in China will require up to 20 Gbps connections between the radio units and the baseband units. Working with China's leading mobile BTS manufacturers, we have already verified 2:1 data compression rates which will save millions of dollars as China rolls out TD-LTE nationwide."
Today's announcement is a win-win for both American and Chinese companies as it further demonstrates the Chinese government's willingness to enhance the country's business environment and relationships with foreign corporations.
"Protection of intellectual property is the cornerstone for enabling China's migration from 'Made in China' to 'Designed in China'," says Tom Sparkman, Samplify CEO. "These patents not only protect our technology, but will give Chinese OEMs wider access to international intellectual property that will accelerate their time to market for differentiated solutions."
About Samplify Systems:
Samplify is a venture-funded solution provider of signal compression technology and semiconductor products. Headquartered in Santa Clara, CA, Samplify's customers include wireless infrastructure, medical imaging, and industrial control companies. Samplify's technology and semiconductor products, including the SAM1600 family, have won multiple industry awards for innovation, including the first data converter with integrated data compression. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Aug. 9 -- DeviantART.com introduces its latest contribution to artists around the world -- a web-based HTML5 drawing tool with full-blown layer capabilities, pressure sensitivity, and multiple brushes -- offered free to all members of deviantART.
DeviantART Muro takes advantage of HTML5 to provide superior function, speed, and flexibility over any other web-based drawing application, and its launch on deviantART ensures its immediate adoption by millions of artists worldwide. DeviantART Muro fully integrates Wacom's pressure sensitivity plug-in. Wacom is the world leader in drawing tablets. DeviantART Muro is the most powerful and simplest to use web-based drawing application available and is compatible with more devices than any distant competitor.
"DeviantART Muro is pure fun for anyone," said deviantART's co-founder and CEO, Angelo Sotira. "But it's also a highly sophisticated application that will meet and exceed the needs of professionals in the arts. DeviantART Muro offers the best brushes for pressure sensitivity on the web, and because of its design, we can continually expand the tool's features and functions in response to user comments or to new devices, almost on the fly."
The drawing tool is free to all members of deviantART, as is membership to the site. DeviantART enjoys a continuing and unbroken record of providing visual artists the most complete and active social network worldwide. Among the features available in deviantART Muro are:
-- Over 20 brushes, each uniquely programmed
-- Basic and Pro modes, both of which are free
-- Ability to use unlimited layers with variable opacity
-- Ability upload directly to your deviantART gallery or save to your
hard drive
-- iPad support
-- Advanced keyboard shortcuts
DeviantART Muro works on more devices than Adobe tools because it takes advantage of the latest developments in HTML5 and sits natively without download in the user's browser. Corel, another market leader in drawing applications, offers nothing comparable in web function.
DeviantART Muro has proven to be an overnight sensation.
DeviantART was created to entertain, inspire, and empower the artist in all of us. Founded in August 2000, deviantART is the largest social network for artists and art enthusiasts. A platform that allows emerging and established artists to exhibit, promote, and sell their works, deviantART offers a vibrant community that receives over 100,000 daily uploads of original art, ranging from traditional works to digital art, film, literature, and beyond.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 9 -- Google and Verizon's new joint broadband proposal pays lip service to the idea of "net neutrality," but actually would completely undermine the open and free Internet we enjoy, Consumer Watchdog said today.
There are two fundamental flaws, said John M. Simpson, consumer advocate with the nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest group:
"First, it sets up a two-tiered structure. There would be a so-called 'Public Internet,' but then the ISPs would be allowed to offer new premium services outside that basic service. How long to you think anything of interest would be available on the 'Public Internet'?
"Second, no neutrality principles would apply to the wireless world. Everyone agrees mobile is clearly the Internet's future. Allowing data discrimination in the broadband wireless world completely undermines the future of the Internet."
Essentially, this proposal is nothing more than two corporations meeting together and trying to carve up the Internet for their own advantage, Consumer Watchdog said.

SafetyWeb Launches iPhone and Android Apps to Help Parents Protect Their Kids While on the Go
Online Safety Service also Enables Mobile Phone Monitoring for Parents
DENVER, Aug. 9 -- SafetyWeb LLC, the online service that helps parents keep their children safe online, launched a first-of-its-kind online safety app for the iPhone and Android, offering parents unprecedented connectivity and ability to protect their children from online abuse. The SafetyWeb app (available now in the iPhone App Store and Android Market) provides parents with the ability to track their child's online activity on their smartphones - affording the best information about instances of cyber bullying and abuse and enabling the quickest appropriate response.
"Now that we've extended SafetyWeb onto mobile devices, parents can always be aware of potential online threats to their children - and receive alerts in the palm of their hand," said Geoffrey Arone, co-founder of SafetyWeb.
Additionally, through the acquisition of Odojo in July 2010, SafetyWeb has integrated mobile phone data into its monitoring algorithms, providing the most comprehensive information to parents who are concerned with their children's online social interactions. By incorporating Odojo's technology, SafetyWeb gives parents the unprecedented ability to track children's texting activity, influxes of mobile activity and potential dangers.
"Kids are constantly plugged in, and the tools we provide help parents protect their kids' safety, privacy and reputation. By integrating Odojo's technology, we can offer mobile phone monitoring - which is important because of how frequently kids use their phones," said Michael Clark, co-founder of SafetyWeb. "Bullying is no longer limited to the playground or classroom, and our mission is to plug parents in to where it's happening - whether it's online or via text message."
SafetyWeb is the first service of its kind to provide parents with layers of relevant data about their child's online social presence - searching the web for images, mentions and social network information. SafetyWeb empowers parents with the information they need to diffuse and deter instances of abusive digital behavior - from cyber bullying to unwanted solicitations - and to decide the best course of action if their child is victimized online.
SafetyWeb will soon incorporate data into their leading-edge safety service from gaming consoles and geo-location services, providing parents with a comprehensive toolkit that helps pinpoint concerning behavior. Since launch, over 2,500 affiliates are distributing SafetyWeb. The service provides parents with easy-to-read weekly reports on their child's online activity and 24-hour access to website services for $10/month or $100/year. U-verse Mobile replaces the popular Mobile Remote Access for iPhone app and incorporates the ability to browse the U-verse TV program guide, view program descriptions, schedule and manage your DVR recordings, while adding the ability to download available episodes over any Wi-Fi connection, and watch them in full-screen mode on your iPhone from anywhere. U-verse TV customers already enjoy the flexibility of remote DVR management. More than 100,000 U-verse TV customers use the Web and Mobile Remote Access apps every month.
"We're making it possible for you to watch TV shows on your iPhone at no extra charge. "Our U-verse multi-screen promise is now a reality for millions of U-verse TV customers, with content available on U-verse TV, U-verse Online, and today, U-verse Mobile. No cable provider comes close to matching the cross-platform experience we're delivering today, and we'll continue to add unique features that further integrate these screens."
All U-verse TV customers can download the app to manage their DVR, and the ability to download and watch content is available for customers that subscribe to the U300 package or higher. U-verse customers can upgrade their TV packages at any time at http://www.att.com/u-verse. In addition to U-verse Mobile, you can check your wireless and U-verse Voice messages from a single voice mailbox; use the YP.COM TV app to search for local business information and send the call to your home or wireless phone with the click of your remote; and more.
AT&T U-verse TV is the only 100 percent Internet Protocol-based television (IPTV) service offered by a national service provider, making AT&T U-verse one of the most dynamic and feature-rich services available today. GenosTV, the World's First Virtual Cable Television Provider is Seeking Beta Testers to Ensure Its Service and Functionality Sets a New Standard for Cable TV Worldwide
- GenosTV is a Virtual Television Service That Will Be Made Available On IP Connected Televisions, Set Top Boxes, Cell Phones and Other IPTV Service Offerings - Distribution Partners and Television Manufacturers Receive Monthly Revenues By Partnering with GenosTV - Beta Testers are Needed Worldwide
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 9 -- Today, GenosTV announces that it is seeking beta testers to ensure its service exceeds consumers' expectations for the next generation cable television service. Interested parties are encouraged to email all of their contact information, prior relevant experience and why they should be chosen to be part of the Genos Team, to betatesters@genos.tv.
The company announces that there will be no GenosTV Cable Box needed for its service. The Cable Television service is VIRTUAL and will merely be a "Button" on the user interfaces of IP Connected Televisions Sets, Blue Ray Players, Cell Phones, and other IPTV services. Pandora, internet radio, is a great example of this distribution strategy. Television manufacturers can finally realize revenue beyond the markup they receive on their hardware sales and turn their TV into a recurring revenue stream by partnering with GenosTV. The same is true for other internet enabled consumer electronic devices. The Company is forming relationships and is seeking agreements with distribution partners worldwide. This new strategy allows consumers to switch to Genos Cable TV without any upfront fees or new equipment and it gives Genos the distribution necessary to offer cable networks millions of new customers as we can reach "Off Net' consumers in rural areas and offer limited television services for under $10.00.
"GenosTV is the most disruptive business model in history," said Rob Shambro, the company's Chairman and CEO. "When researchers and analysts fully evaluate the impact of GenosTV on the consumers, how TVME gives everyone a stage, how the existing networks who have never had to market themselves have to change to survive, how the cable companies are going to have to change because consumers finally have a television provider alternative, cross pollination of international cable networks, new jobs and industries created and the effect on global advertising, they will see the massive impact that Genos has on media worldwide. No one will ever admit it but Genos has already effected every corner of the cable television industry and has saved consumers millions of dollars. Our business model and January launch date has caused many companies to go back to the drawing board. Customers have been unhappy for so long and the first chance they get to switch to a solid alternative, they will," said Shambro. "Remember when Orbitz and Travelocity eliminated the travel agent? That was nothing compared to the effect of GenosTV on the media sector."
Marc Diego, VP Corporate Development, a former graduate of UCLA is spear heading a prelaunch of the service at the UCLA campus along with managing the collegiate marketing teams nationwide. GenosTV is accepting applications for campus representatives across the country. Interested parties can submit their resume to jobs@genos.tv. GenosTV will launch its service at the Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 6-9, 2011 in Las Vegas.
About Genos(TM)
Genos(TM) is a subsidiary of the ShambroWest Corporation, with offices in Las Vegas and Amsterdam. It was founded by Rob Shambro, Serial Entrepreneur and founder of SAVVIS, STREAMSEARCH and ILABS, Mike West, subject matter expert in consumer electronics and former technical leader at IBM, and Kevin Bachus, creator of the Microsoft XBOX.
GenosTV will create the world's first, broadband pay television network that allows consumers to purchase the television channels that they want to watch rather than arbitrary bundles of channels in which they have no interest. This has the potential to save every GenosTV customer up to 70% in comparison to their previous cable or satellite bill. The patent-pending television service will be delivered to any Internet-connected device, including the latest generation of Internet-connected televisions and wireless Blu-Ray players. Provided as a subscription service that can be accessed on personal computers, mobile devices and Internet-connected consumer electronic devices, GenosTV will be the first and only linear television service to take advantage of the growing installed base of platforms capable of running TV applications. Just as Vonage transformed the market for telephone services overnight by providing a service on top of existing consumer data connections, GenosTV intends to transform the market for television services.
By using a direct sell-through approach of delivering content from producer to consumer, GenosTV will, for the first time, bring a "supermarket model" to television subscription, with "on-the-shelf" content delivered at fair market price. Currently consumers are forced to purchase packages of content - from a single provider or an aggregate of many providers. On GenosTV, channels will be offered à la carte to subscribers (who can create their own custom line-up). For the first time, television networks will set the price for their content and consumers will subscribe to only those channels they actually want - leading potentially to impulse purchasing behaviors as consumers add channels to their line-up directly through the GenosTV interface.
Through this expanded, direct and monetizable relationship with the subscriber a better relationship and access to existing viewers of content will develop. This will enable access to potential customers that the content has never been able to reach before. Furthermore, the television networks can incentivize consumers to take multiple channels from the same provider by offering optional discounted bundles or premium pricing for longer-term subscription commitments The company announces that there will be no GenosTV Cable Box needed for its service.

Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Drives History Into the Future
New mobile app, iPhone tour gives guests intimate look at Ford family
GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich., Aug. 9 -- Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., continues the Ford family legacy of innovation and technology with its own iPhone and iPad application and interactive tour. The app is free on iTunes and as a web app for most smartphones. Pre-loaded iPod Touches are also provided on-site to visitors of the historic home in suburban Detroit.
The launch increases accessibility to the Ford Family story using technology in a style that's leading the museum app revolution.
Using 60 minutes of exclusive video, an original soundtrack and never-before-seen footage of the Ford family at play in the 1930s and 40s, the app explores the home that Edsel Ford, the only child of Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford, shared with his wife Eleanor and their four children. The app weaves together home movies, an interactive estate map and site-specific interviews with the people who were there. Users experience the Ford family story via their smartphone, becoming the leader in their visit with this treasured American family.
Many videos were filmed by Edsel Ford himself, providing an intimate look into the auto legend's mind at a pinnacle time in the Ford family history.
"It's unlike any museum tour I've seen," said Kathleen Mullins, president of Ford House. "It literally allows visitors to enter the story by providing access to personal movies of the family when they weren't in the public eye, relaxed and enjoying being a family. It's very personal and sometimes deeply emotional. Visitors will be able to connect with this iconic family in a whole new way."
For example, guests walking near the swimming pool can touch the screen to watch a video of Eleanor and the children playing by the pool, standing in the space where it actually happened. Or they will be able to watch touching footage of Edsel and Eleanor ice skating before Edsel's untimely death. (For a sneak preview of the iPhone tour, visit http://www.fordhouse.org).
"This technology is a liberation from the traditional, passive museum experience. It's really about you - what do you want to explore? This positions the Ford House as a real leader in the field," said Rob Pyles, Creative Director at the app's developer, Audissey Media.
The app is available free from iTunes and as a web app from most smartphones at http://www.fordhouse.org/mobiletour. Ford House admission includes a guided tour and iPod Touch use.

Verizon Wireless Reports $146 Million Enhancement to Florida Digital Network in First Half of 2010
TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 9 -- Verizon Wireless, the nation's leading wireless company with the largest, most reliable voice and 3G data network, announced today that it invested $146 million in the first half of 2010 to further enhance advanced wireless services and coverage for Florida customers.
The investment included construction and upgrades to large network facilities, installation of high-tech in-building systems at numerous high-traffic or high-priority Florida venues, the integration of former Alltel network facilities, and the deployment of test teams and vehicles roaming the state to ensure the most reliable and advanced 3G coverage. In addition, technicians have been making intensive preparations to launch even more advanced 4G high-speed data services in Florida, with a rollout scheduled later this year.
South Florida "super switch"
Completed in early 2010, the new South Florida Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO) is a 45,000-square-foot facility located in west Broward County. The facility now serves as the company's main call-processing hub for South Florida, with the capacity to handle tens of millions of voice calls and wireless data transmissions each day. The structure, designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, is equipped with large-scale back-up power generation, further enhancing the everyday and emergency strength of the Verizon Wireless network. The facility joins other Verizon Wireless "super switches" in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa Bay and Jupiter.
In-building systems
Verizon Wireless completed numerous high-tech in-building systems that use dozens of small wireless transmitters - which resemble small smoke detectors - to ensure strong inside coverage. These systems were installed in high-priority public safety facilities such as police stations, emergency command centers and hospitals, as well as high-traffic wireless consumer locations such as hotels, resorts and tourist attractions.
Alltel integration
Verizon Wireless technicians have integrated more than 700 Alltel cell sites and several large switching facilities across the state to work as part of the largest and most advanced Verizon Wireless network. With the assimilation of former Alltel resources, many of which located in smaller markets along the Gulf Coast or rural areas in North Florida, the Verizon Wireless company-owned network now covers nearly the entire state and virtually 100 percent of Florida's population.
Test teams
Verizon Wireless network technicians traveled more than 25,000 miles across the state so far this year in special vehicles to measure connection quality on the Verizon Wireless network versus other carriers. Using sophisticated testing equipment, the local test teams conducted more than 100,000 voice call attempts and almost 600,000 data tests on the Verizon Wireless network and those of major competitors to ensure network superiority.
4G or Long Term Evolution technology
Verizon Wireless plans to launch by the end of the year its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network in 25 to 30 markets nationally. LTE will deliver significantly greater high-speed network capacity than even today's most advanced 3G coverage. Verizon Wireless technicians have been making extensive hardware and software installations and enhancements to thousands of network resources (switching facilities, cell sites, etc.) in Florida to provide LTE services to customers when 4G launches in the state.
Ongoing effort
The investment to enhance network reliability in Florida is an ongoing focus of Verizon Wireless. Since the company formed in 2000, more than $2 billion has been spent to keep enhancing Verizon Wireless coverage and services for customers in the state. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $60 billion to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.
Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable and largest wireless voice and 3G data network, serving more than 92 million customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 79,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ)(NASDAQ: VZ) and Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD). Tasktop Introduces Agile Planner for Eclipse at Agile 2010
New product enables Agile planning from the IDE and integrates multi-vendor Agile ALM solutions
ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 9 -- Agile 2010 -- Tasktop Technologies (http://www.tasktop.com), creators of Eclipse Mylyn and the leader in Agile Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) integration and productivity, today announced the Tasktop Agile Planner, a new product that leverages Mylyn connectors to provide Agile teams the ability to manage existing defect and project management systems with planning support that spans across multiple vendors' solutions. The planner provides a rich desktop client and Eclipse-based user interface for accessing Tasktop Certified Agile project management integrations, including ThoughtWorks Studios' Mingle, IBM Rational Team Concert, Rally, CollabNet's ScrumWorks, Atlassian's JIRA and VersionOne.
The Tasktop Agile Planner provides a unique Eclipse-based native user interface for Windows, Mac and Linux that enhances the web-based interfaces of those solutions and additionally provides offline access to plans. Only the Tasktop Agile Planner offers cross-repository planning facilities that enable user stories to be associated with defects stored in external systems, such as HP Quality Center and Bugzilla. The Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE) integration supports automatic linking between plan items and source code artifacts, and enables developers and team leads to create and monitor Agile development plans directly from Eclipse, making it effortless to maintain project status awareness and keep plans up-to-date.
"The problem of plans becoming disconnected from development activity is rampant in enterprise adoptions of Agile," said Mik Kersten, CEO of Tasktop Technologies and creator of the open source Eclipse Mylyn project. "The Tasktop Agile Planner addresses this by ensuring that all ALM systems involved with planning are linked and accessible directly from the Eclipse IDE, where developers and team leads spend the majority of their workday. When combined with the Tasktop developer tools this additional level of integration enhances the best-of-breed Agile project management solutions that we integrate with by ensuring that plans are a real-time representation of development activity."
Tasktop Agile Planner provides project managers, developers and quality assurance team members with a lightweight yet complete planning platform for managing the entire Agile planning process. Core features of Tasktop Agile Planner include:
-- Task Planner: supports release and iteration planning that spans
multiple systems, for instance, a plan can include a story in Rally
that is linked to defects in a JIRA repository (which also are
displayed on the plan).
-- Task Board: provides a visual display of tasks not started, in
progress and complete, right in the developer's IDE.
-- Burn Down Charts: provides a graphical representation of outstanding
work over time.
-- Time Tracking: automates the tracking of time spent on stories and the
ability to view actual time tracking information recorded in the IDE
on the plan.
Availability
The Tasktop Agile Planner is available now in a beta version through Tasktop's early access program, with general availability set for mid-September. Learn more at http://tasktop.com/agile or contact Tasktop at http://tasktop.com/about/contactus/ to join the early access program. Tasktop will be demonstrating the product at its booth at Agile 2010 (http://www.agile2010.org). When released, the Tasktop Agile Planner will support in-IDE planning for Tasktop Certified ALM solutions, such as IBM Rational Team Concert, Atlassian JIRA, CollabNet's ScrumWorks, Rally, ThoughtWorks Studios' Mingle and VersionOne.

LG Electronics Unveils Self-Diagnosing Customer Service Feature for Laundry Systems
'SmartDiagnosis' Makes Troubleshooting More Efficient, Helps Minimize Service Calls
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Aug. 9 -- LG Electronics USA today launched a new self-diagnosis technology for LG clothes washers and dryers that delivers added convenience while saving consumers time and money.
Called SmartDiagnosis(TM), this LG-developed innovation helps customer service representatives quickly and efficiently troubleshoot mechanical issues over the phone, limiting costly, inconvenient service calls and in-home visits. The combination of this new feature, along with the unprecedented 10-year warranty on LG's Direct Drive washer motor, illustrates that the company's customer service is as reliable as its laundry products, according to Peter Reiner, senior vice president of marketing, LG Electronics USA.
"LG is the long-time innovation leader in the laundry category - from pioneering technologies such as TrueSteam(TM) in washers and dryers to new design palettes previously unavailable," said Reiner. "SmartDiagnosis technology is another example of LG's commitment to offering smart appliance innovations that deliver new levels of interactivity, convenience and reliability, ultimately offering consumers something better."
How It Works
With SmartDiagnosis, troubleshooting washer and dryer issues is made easier. Consumers calling the LG customer service center are instructed to press select buttons on the laundry unit, which in turn trigger a series of diagnostic tones. Each tone corresponds with a specific potential maintenance need and can be identified by trained service technicians over the phone, allowing them to evaluate the information and provide feedback based on the data that was received.
LG SmartDiagnosis eliminates a step in the troubleshooting process, because issues can at times be identified without the need for a service technician to visit the home for diagnosis, saving time and money. In those instances where a service visit is required, the field technician can come prepared with the correct parts, enabling the repair to be resolved in one visit.
Laundry Innovations
SmartDiagnosis is available on LG's newest front-load SteamWasher(TM) with 6Motion(TM) Technology (models WM3875 and WM3885) and the company's first top-load Wave(TM) Series washer (models WT5101 and WT5001), along with their matching dryers. Both washer series feature LG's Direct Drive motor which has fewer moving parts than conventional motors, helping to guarantee performance time and again. The Direct Drive motor enables innovations such as 6Motion technology that allows the drum to tailor each load with a combination of motions including rolling, stepping, swinging, scrubbing, filtration and tumbling. It also is the catalyst for advanced washing options like ColdWash(TM), an energy-efficient washing option available on both washers, which delivers warm water performance with cold water savings. ColdWash technology allows the deep clean of a warm water wash with less energy consumption, saving consumers up to 60-82 percent on their energy bill.
LG Electronics USA, Inc., based in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., is the North American subsidiary of LG Electronics, Inc., a global force and technology leader in consumer electronics, home appliances and mobile communications. In the United States, LG Electronics sells a range of stylish and innovative home entertainment products, mobile phones, home appliances and business solutions, all under LG's "Life's Good" marketing theme. Introducing MedNetworks: New Venture Based on Social Network Analytic Technology Developed at Harvard University
Company launches with $5 Million in Funding from Excel Venture Management
NEWTON, Mass., Aug. 9 -- MedNetworks, Inc. today launched as a new venture based on the social network analytics research of professor Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University. Christakis is a physician and social scientist internationally renowned for his groundbreaking research on social factors influencing health. MedNetworks has an exclusive license from Harvard University to use the Christakis technology in the healthcare sector. MedNetworks also announced today that it has raised $5 million in Series A financing from Excel Venture Management.
MedNetworks offers pharmaceutical firms, health plans, corporations and hospitals a first-of-its-kind method for analyzing real-life social networks of physicians and patients and identifying patterns of influence. Using sophisticated analytics, MedNetworks maps social networks, evaluates strength and dynamic development of connections of members of these networks, ranks individual influence and performs predictive modeling. The company can apply this analysis to virtually any type of network where data allow connections between individuals.
"For most human phenomena, the power of social influence reverberates through any network -- be it social or professional," said Christakis, scientific founder and board member of MedNetworks. "Identifying and harnessing these patterns will fundamentally change the way the healthcare industry understands its providers and patients. This knowledge will empower our clients to leverage existing data to disseminate information and focus interventions more efficiently, rapidly and effectively." Professor Christakis is co-author of "Connected" and one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world in 2009.
Among physicians, for example, MedNetworks can map detailed networks in communities, evaluate the number and strength of connections between physicians, identify clusters of practitioners and discern influence patterns. By applying this analysis to large data sets, MedNetworks creates detailed, actionable information, allowing more efficient and effective use of promotional efforts.
"While the applications for the social network analysis models coming out of the Christakis Lab are extraordinarily broad, healthcare offers an excellent starting point," said Larry Miller, MedNetworks CEO. "It's a sector where data are often available, but not always used effectively. For example, we're already turning conventional wisdom on its head regarding pharmaceuticals, proving that current approaches fail to take advantage of critical information about social networks. Our analyses indicate that significant influence occurs in social networks beyond high prescribers, so there are advantages to adjusting the focus of promotion. Use of network approaches takes advantage of the 'multiplier effect,' where interventions can have dramatically greater effects as they propagate throughout the networks. The result is a much more efficient, and likely more effective, approach to promotion."
"The technology MedNetworks is using to analyze and activate social networks has tremendous power and broad applicability to help grow various businesses and enhance their profitability," said Dr. Steve Gullans of Excel Venture Management. "This approach has spawned an entire field in academia and is now poised to transform healthcare by helping reduce overall costs and improve outcomes." In connection with this financing, Dr. Gullans and Juan Enriquez will join the MedNetworks Board of Directors.
"We're delighted that this important work will be applied in the healthcare sector," said Isaac Kohlberg, senior associate provost and head of Harvard's Office of Technology Development. "As a leader in technology transfer, Harvard has an obligation, consistent with our public service mission, to help expedite the translation of new technologies to address questions in healthcare delivery."
About MedNetworks
MedNetworks offers the only fully validated and functional technology to map, analyze and activate social networks across the healthcare sector, including consumers, patients, health plan members, physicians and hospitals. This technology, based on groundbreaking research of Harvard University Professor Nicholas Christakis, enables MedNetworks' customers to dramatically increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their interventions. ALPHARETTA, Ga., Aug. 9 -- In its ongoing effort to provide the best wireless service, Verizon Wireless announced today that it invested more than $55 million in the second quarter of 2010 to enhance its network in Georgia. This network enhancement is part of Verizon Wireless' consistent, aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company's voice and data services.

The integrated network is 100 percent 3G.
Trusted Wireless Connectivity
Verizon Wireless invests more in its network than any other wireless service provider in the United States and tests its network and those of its competitors to ensure the Verizon Wireless network remains the nation's most reliable. Using sophisticated testing equipment in specially equipped company vehicles, Verizon Wireless network systems performance engineers drove 497,700 miles to conduct 1.69 million voice call attempts and 9.7 million data tests on the Verizon Wireless network and the networks of major competitors across the United States during the first six months of 2010.
Currently, 97 percent of Georgia's population is covered by Verizon Wireless' 3G network, providing customers with the ability to browse the Web faster for quick page-loading times, quick downloads for music and 3D games, streaming video, e-mails with attachments, video conferencing and more.
"Our focus is on providing the best customer experience, which we know is largely driven by our network," says Mango. "Our test men and women in Georgia enable us to not only understand our customers' experiences today, they also allow us to make decisions on network investments that will provide the best service in the future. A superior and reliable wireless network is no longer measured by 'bars' or new cell towers. Our investment is largely focused on adding power and capacity to our existing statewide 3G network."

New KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections One-of-a-Kind Service Helps Brides Take Treasured Photographs out of the Electronic Shoebox to Create, Share and Preserve Memories with Customized Heirloom Albums
Kodak Trialing Unique Offering Where Designers Create Heirloom Albums for Consumers
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 9 -- It's a new kind of bride, who, rather than engaging professionals to photograph her wedding day, chooses friends or family members and designates them the "official photographer" of the day. Unlike the professional photographer - who not only captures the wedding, but also helps retouch and lay out photo and print images - the friend or family member simply hands over a DVD/CD of the day. As a result, these brides become the "orphaned brides," who, after the honeymoon is over, realize they want more than just a DVD/CD to remember their day. In spite of good intentions, at best, the DVD/CD often sits on a shelf gathering dust. At its worst, it gets damaged, leaving the couple with no photographs to tell the story of their wedding day.
To help these brides relive their day and preserve their memories for future generations, Eastman Kodak Company is trialing KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections. This unique new service for consumers provides access to designers to create one-of-a-kind stunning heirloom albums, taking the work and hassle out of creating an album on their own. The service leverages Kodak's network of professional photographic labs for design and printing to offer a service unmatched in quality and premium album selection.
"Many couples opt for wedding images from friends and family members on a DVD/CD, but are unclear on how to go about creating high quality wedding albums, or give up due to complexity and time constraints. They also run the risk of losing their photographs, should the DVD get damaged or technology render the DVD useless," said Therese Corrigan-Bastuk, Worldwide Marketing Director, Film Capture, Paper & Output Systems, Eastman Kodak Company. "With KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections, Kodak makes it easy for newlyweds to create customized, one-of-a-kind professional albums, simply by uploading their images to this service and then choosing the preferred features of their own heirloom album. From there, our professional designers take over, laying out the images to tell the story of the wedding day and presenting it back to the customer for final approval. As we enter the trial period with this new offering, we expect KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections to offer valued services while removing traditional roadblocks to premium album creation."
The KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections service provides distinct value to consumers, including professional design support and unlimited layouts with high quality and choice in cover materials. Also, KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections heirloom wedding albums use KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Paper, which lasts for more than 200 years in typical dark home storage. KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections lets consumers blend the images from the designated photographer along with personal candids captured by other wedding guests. As a result, the story of their wedding day will be as beautiful, complete and elegant as the brides remember it.
To create heirloom albums using KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections, consumers need to do three simple steps:
1. Download KODAK PROFESSIONAL Collections software, which shows the
catalog of offerings via http://www.kodak.com/go/professionalcollections
2. Choose from gorgeous covers, custom layouts and versatile sizes.
3. Upload photos. (Note: Consumers are responsible for all images
uploaded, shared or copied using the Service. Copyright law does not
allow Kodak to print pictures and graphics without permission of the
copyright owner. The original photographer owns the copyright in any
photograph, unless the photographer has licensed or sold those rights.)
Once this is complete, a skilled professional will do the rest and present the consumer with a preview for approval and final order. The end result is a beautiful heirloom album that will tell the story of the couple's special day for generations to come.

The 2010 Audi A8 is the first automobile on the market to feature a factory-installed mobile hotspot, representing a significant milestone for in-car Internet technology. The 2010 Audi A8 with MMH technology is now available in Europe.
Marvell and Harman Automotive integrated MMH technology into the Audi vehicle through a built-in WLAN module, enabling high speed online and internet access via cellular link or Bluetooth connected mobile devices. The MMH technology implements a full-featured, WLAN access point integrated entirely on the wireless chip. The technology integrated into Harman connectivity system realizes a full-featured local Wi-Fi mobile hotspot within the vehicle, giving passengers access to Web-based services. Up to eight devices can be supported, from Smartphones to high-performance tablets and other advanced mobile devices like Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras, laptops and portable gaming devices.
"I believe today's consumers want the convenience of seamless connectivity and live content whenever and wherever they choose -- whether in the home, office, classroom or automobile. Marvell is proud to be the industry driver of this new 'connected mobility' revolution," said Weili Dai, Marvell's Co-founder and Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer and Computing Business Unit. "Harman's solution for the Audi A8 sedan is a perfect example of using Marvell's live, always-on technology to bring the car fully into the broader connected ecosystem. Marvell's connectivity technologies transform the car into a mobile office and entertainment center, making accessible everything from productivity tools to passenger gaming and live media experiences. Finally, the car is connected to the rest of our lives."
"We are pleased to partner with Marvell in extending a key component of the mobile office concept to our customers through this milestone application," said Sachin Lawande, Harman Chief Technology Officer and Co-President, Automotive. "We are committed to providing a comprehensive in-car experience in cooperation with leading automakers, and the mobile Wi-Fi innovation takes this to a new level."
Marvell's unique Wi-Fi software architecture is optimized for extremely low power consumption on battery-powered consumer electronics, enabling passengers to connect to the vehicle's network without affecting the battery life of their connected devices. MMH technology provides a secure Internet connection with standard 802.11 WPA2 authentication and data encryption mechanisms.
