Visteon's Camera-Enhanced Cockpit Concept Keeps "Eyes" on the Driver and Road to Mitigate Distraction
New camera technology recognizes driver to adjust settings, monitor road ahead for obstacles, and help prevent theft
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Sept. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Visteon Corporation (NYSE: VC) is addressing the challenge of driver distraction through a new cockpit concept that uses multiple cameras in the vehicle to keep a constant eye on both the driver and the road ahead.
The new camera-enhanced cockpit concept from Visteon Electronics - designed with input from consumers - uses cameras to automatically enlarge certain driver controls, thus limiting the time needed to operate them and helping prevent potential collisions. The concept also recognizes the driver to adjust settings while helping prevent theft.
Visteon's system offers potential improvements over other camera-based systems by providing a simple user interface, and through the efficient way in which it could be integrated into the vehicle.

During a recent Visteon consumer research study, 80 percent of those surveyed reacted positively to Visteon's camera-enhanced cockpit concept, which allows cameras to be integrated into various locations to provide optimal viewing angles. The cameras determine where the driver is looking and - paired with a microprocessor that calculates data from the cameras - can ascertain which center display panel controls the driver is eyeing. Based on this data, the system can automatically and instantly enhance these controls, making them easier to view.
This recognition capability can also be used to automatically adjust controls like seat position and side mirrors. In addition, it can help guard against theft by ensuring the vehicle's engine won't start in the event of a break-in - even recording images of the intruder.
The front-facing camera captures obstacles ahead of the vehicle, such as pedestrians and road signs. A microprocessor calculates data from the front-facing camera and the driver cameras to ascertain the direction the driver is looking when pedestrians or important road signs appear - and to determine whether they have been seen. This information then can be relayed to the driver through an audible alert and a visual cue on the instrument cluster.

This newest product is a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI(®)) to MIPI(®)( )DSI converter chipset with video de-interlacing, scaling, and format conversion. This is the first and only device in the market that enables HDMI video output to be converted and processed as a MIPI DSI video stream for small form-factor LCD displays in many consumer and industrial applications.(1)

With new LSI video processing, de-interlacing and scaling, the TC358779XBG significantly reduces the memory bandwidth and video processing requirements on the host processor. Up-down scaling and color-space conversion allows output from the application processor to be formatted and scaled to match the display panel's output resolution and color format.
The maximum resolution supported is 1920 x 1200 @ 24 bpp at a refresh rate of 60 fps. The device supports common 3D video formats and protocols compatible with the HDMI 1.4 standard. The TC358779XBG supports a MIPI DSI interface up to 4Gbps to an LCD display panel with configurable 1, 2, 3, or 4 data lanes with lane speeds of up to 1 Gbps per lane.
The Toshiba TC358779XBG is an 80-pin device for non-HDI boards with a small package size of 7.0 x 7.0 mm, 0.65 mm ball pitch and 1.0 mm maximum height.

fully playable video game, 'Workplace: The Game'. The game launches to celebrate
