VDI Project Powered by Tegile Systems Pays Dividends for Bank of Stockton
NEWARK, Calif., Nov. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tegile Systems, the leading provider of flash driven storage arrays for virtualized server and virtual desktop environments, announced today that the Bank of Stockton, with 16 branches in Central California, has deployed hybrid storage arrays from Tegile Systems to power its new virtual desktop infrastructure project.
The 146-year-old company with nearly $2 billion in assets is the oldest bank in California, but the first in its market to pioneer new technologies like electronic banking, Internet banking and mobile banking. Its VDI initiative's initial rollout included 80 virtualized desktops running VMware View hosted on NetApp arrays. But users experienced slowdowns when branch activity peaked, and the storage performance could not keep up.
The bank chose Tegile over NetApp, HP and Nimble Storage, and installed two Tegile Zebi HA2100EP arrays that leverage the performance of flash storage and the cost and capacity of hard disk drives. Tegile's Zebi arrays intelligently integrate DRAM, flash and hard disk storage to create an optimized hybrid storage appliance with best in class data protection features and user-friendly interface.
However, despite Tegile's vastly better value proposition, Vincent Lo, the bank's vice president, applications and support, remained skeptical of Tegile's data deduplication and compression claims, and purchased more capacity than Tegile recommended. The bank calculated it would need about 8TB to support 100 VDI instances and other applications, but after the Zebi arrays performed capacity optimization, 160 virtual desktops and other data consumed just 3TB of the 32TB total capacity the bank purchased, leaving ample headroom for expansion.
"Their data reduction claims were accurate and then some, we just didn't believe them," Lo said. "The price/performance value was much higher with Tegile. It just doesn't happen for people to deliver at their level of service. I've been in the IT business for 25 years and this is the strongest customer support I have seen."
Instead of using the more common linked-clones VDI scheme, Bank of Stockton uses persistent desktop images, introducing a higher I/O load on SAN storage in a VDI install. Tegile delivered more than six times the performance of the bank's previous storage: it now averages 20,000 IOPS for the VDI environment, with a peak of 40,000 IOPS.
"The search for a storage upgrade that could deliver the IOPS to keep up with their VDI requirements sent Bank of Stockton to a number of strong solutions, but in the end, only Zebi arrays delivered the holy grail of storage - high performance, high capacity and high reliability at low cost," said Rob Commins, vice president of marketing, Tegile Systems.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announces sample shipments of its TCM5126GBA, a VGA 1/4 inch CMOS image sensor for automotive camera applications. The device combines a small chip-scale package (CSP) with through silicon via (TSV)( 1) technology for a 30 percent size reduction compared to equivalent products (2). The ultra-compact image sensor will drive smaller camera modules for rear viewing in parking assist systems, surround view systems and side view systems in new car models.
"The automotive industry has a keen focus on driver safety, as such there will be a dramatic increase in the number of cameras in new cars," says Andrew Burt, vice president of the Image Sensor Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. The TCM5126GBA delivers 60fps (full resolution) image quality. It integrates a high dynamic range (HDR) function that reproduces superior image quality of objects backlit by the sun or vehicle headlights. The sensor also incorporates a picture-flip function that can horizontally and/or vertically flip output images, an on-screen display function that outputs preliminary set parking guidelines together with the image, and a zoom function for use in rear view cameras in parking assist systems. A built-in timer function sustains images when the transmission is shifted from reverse to forward, allowing drivers to see a continuous video stream when backing into a parking space. The stand-alone operation support (SAOS) function enables automatic operation when power is supplied without external microcontrollers, also contributing to the design simplification of automotive view camera systems.

ATK Supports Launch of United Launch Alliance's Atlas V
ATK Composite and Propulsion Technologies Help Launch MAVEN Spacecraft
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- ATK (NYSE: ATK) provided critical hardware for the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V vehicle that launched a first-of-its-kind spacecraft today from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
Now on its way to Mars, NASA's MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) spacecraft will survey the upper atmosphere of the red planet to help scientists understand how the loss of atmospheric gas over time has changed the Martian climate. Lockheed Martin Space Systems (NYSE:LMT) designed and built the MAVEN spacecraft for NASA.

For the ULA Atlas V rocket, ATK produced the 10-foot diameter composite heat shield, which provides essential protection for the first stage of the launch vehicle. The assembly was fabricated using advanced fiber placement manufacturing techniques at ATK's Iuka, Miss., facility.
The Atlas V rocket flew in the 401 vehicle configuration with a 4-meter fairing. This is the 41(st) Atlas V launch using ATK-built composite structures.
This flight also marked the sixth successful flight of the ATK retro motors. Eight of these solid motors supported separation of the spent first stage. The Atlas retrorocket is built at ATK's Missile Defense and Controls facility in Elkton, Md.
Additionally, ATK manufactured the fuel and pressurant tanks for the MAVEN spacecraft as well as the reaction control system propellant tank for the Atlas V at its facility in Commerce, Calif.

AwoX is a board member of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), the audio/video
interconnection standards body, and holds numerous major international patents for its
connected technologies and multimedia products. AwoX's design and R&D activities are
carried out at its corporate headquarters in Montpellier (France), while production
management is carried out by its industrial subsidiary based in Singapore. AwoX has sales
