I need to stop buying so many board games. I'm off to a bad start though as I recently purchased Hive.

I have an addiction. I got into board gaming a couple of years ago and have steadily increased my buying habits.

I wasn't even aware there were so many games and gaming genres in the world. I had only ever been introduced to your standard "roll the dice and move" games as well as party games. And then traditional abstracts like Chess or Go. Lately I've been really getting into light-heavy strategy games.

I gotta say the same. I guess I myself never found any board games worthwhile to play so I never got interested.

The games I play aren't considered 'tradtional' I guess. I'm not playing Monopoly or Risk. My current favorites are:

El Grande - A sweet area control game with minimal luck. The board will set up differently every time so you will never play the same game twice. In the rare cases when I win El Grande, I feel like I've actually accomplished something. It's got just the right amount of strategical and tactical decision making to keep me hooked.

Carcassonne - It's a traditional gateway game, but there are enough expansions and possibilities for this game that I'm brought back again and again. Every non-board gamer I have introduced this too has, at the very least, enjoyed playing it.

Stone Age - It just came out this year and while it has dice, the worker-placement mechanic, tools, and general number of times you roll dice in the game will mitigate any luck playing too large a role in the game, i.e. your rolls should even out over time. I've only played a few games of it, because it's a little daunting to teach at first, but I love playing it. There are so many avenues to victory and I'm sure that because of the dice, no one strategy can work every time.

Well there are a few board game editions of computer games.

Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery and StarCraft: The Board Game are both pretty highly regarded. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to try either.

I saw StarCraft for sale at my gaming store for 50% off, but I ended up buying Stone Age instead because Stone Age came out this year and has been hard to get recently. Also, I have more of a chance of my girlfriend playing a game like Stone Age then StarCraft. Something about the Sci-Fi theme would probably turn her off. Especially the extreme tactical and confrontational nature of that game.

She does like a little confrontation and player interaction during gameplay, but I feel like she would never want to play a game against me where the point was to eliminate me. Especially with so many rules to remember. I've just recently gotten her to start playing Hive and I'll stick with that until I think she'll be interested in something like StarCraft.

In other news, I'm really not doing well on this resolution. Haha, I passed by this store in the mall that was going out of business. They had a bunch of board games so I decided to take a look around. There really wasn't very much in there. Your standard American "roll and go" or party game, board games. There were a couple of gems though.

They had The Settelers of Catan, which is one of the original games that got me into the hobby. They also had re-issues of Diplomacy and Acquire by Avalon Hill Games. In the end, I snagged up the last copy of Ingenious for 50% off. What would have been a 36-40$ game ended up only being 18 bucks. I felt like it would have been a shame to leave it there. I've never played it before, but the designer, Reiner Knizia, has made a few of my favorite games to play so I decided to try it. I'll let you all know how I like it after a few games.

Indeed, the WoW game is pretty bland as far as fantasy board games go. But in truth I think WoW is pretty bland as far as computer games go so that might have something to do with it.
