»Microsoft Uses Patents Against Open Source

It seems that Microsoft will try to extort money (or FUD, at least) from Open Source companies and such by saying that many projects infringe on its patents. The funny thing is that Microsoft will not release which patents are being infringed on... This leads to a baseless argument since the Open Source community cannot defend itself.

When Novell and Microsoft announced their patent deal, the Free Software Foundation was quick to say it would move to prohibit such arrangements in a future version of the General Public License (GPL), the most widely used open-source license. The most recent draft seeks to prohibit all future deals of that nature and potentially past ones, too. The timing of Microsoft's pronouncement is telling, Radcliffe said, "particularly when you think that GPL version 3 is still in draft. I don't think that is a coincidence," he said.

As if Microsoft is really suffering, give me a break. It also is a little reminiscent of the SCO claim that parts of Linux kernel was copied from their UNIX kernel. Of course they didn't really sue, just extorted sums of money by threatening to sue....

But SCO is now dry of cash due to the legal matters.

The new OS Xtreme theme is out in FORCE. Try it now and be amazed. It is the best style we've got.

Which reminds me to check in on the going to hell thing. I wonder if you can go somewhere you don't believe in. Personally, I don't have much faith in the existence of NJ.

Yeah, I see your point. The likelihood of Microsoft not being solvent is pretty slim, isn't it?

Eh, sometimes I wonder why Microsoft doesn't have better things to do.

I would think that Microsoft would be more interested in fixing the problems with Vista than with sueing people over things like that. But, I guess if their products are selling as well as they had been, they might need a new influx of money?
