it wakes you up. . .
In the futuristic city of Chicago, the survivors of a previous war isolate themselves from the rest of humanity, erecting a fence around the outskirts of their largely-abandoned town. After the war, humanity began to blame different negative human qualities for the evil in the world. Society was divided up into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue.
→ Those who blamed lies formed Candor, the honest.
→ Those who blamed ignorance formed Erudite, the intelligent.
→ Those who blamed hatred formed Amity, the peaceful.
→ Those who blamed selfishness formed Abnegation, the selfless.
→ Those who blamed cowardice formed Dauntless, the brave.
The city is ruled over by Abnegation representatives who, because of their commitment to selflessness, are incorruptible resulting in a seemingly utopic society. There is peace.
At the age of sixteen, teens are required to complete an aptitude test to define the faction they are most suited for. The test is to examine the child's aptitude or the disposition towards one of the five traits of the five factions. It is a good indicator of what faction a child should choose based on his/her predominant characteristic. The following day they must choose which faction they will devote their lives to - and "faction over blood" is taken very seriously. Though the aptitude test may be taken into consideration, a person must make the final decision for themselves. New members of a faction then go through an initiation process where they are tested and assessed on their abilities. Full concentration is required, as those who fail to complete initiation end up with the factionless. And trust me when I say - you'd rather be dead.
But there are those that threaten the system. The Divergent.
Faction leaders want their members to think and act a certain way, according to how their faction states. For most, it is easy adapt. The factions have conditioned their members to think and act a certain way, and they've made their members find a pattern of thought that works and stays that way. But the Divergents' minds are said to "move in several different directions" and can’t be confined to one way of thinking, meaning they cannot be controlled. They are to be eliminated.
After all, the future belongs to those who know where they belong.
" I choose to turn away from my reflection, to rely not on myself but on my brothers and sisters, to project always outward until I disappear. "
-Abnegation Manifesto
Abnegation was formed by those who blamed selfishness for human nature's errors. They believe in selfless actions and attaining peace through the elimination of selfishness. By doing so, they choose to completely forget themselves and only serve others. Abnegation value the virtue of selflessness over any other. Abnegation initiates upon attaining membership are forced to reject a life of vanity and self-indulgence, protecting themselves from greed and envy which are considered forms of selfishness. Gossiping, using the mirror for long periods of time and buying luxury items are forbidden. As an Abnegation, the focus of their lives will be in serving others instead of themselves, anything done for self-enjoyment is thereby discouraged. Abnegations are usually very quiet as they don't like to call attention to themselves and they find joy in helping others.
Members are expected to be compliant to others at all times, even if that person is in Abnegation as well. They take the stairs and allow the elevators to be used by others. It is not unnatural for strangers on the streets to see an Abnegation helping them with anything such as carrying their groceries or treating their injury. Immoral actions are not a trait of an Abnegation such as the usage of guns for violence. The faction mandates that guns be only used for self-defense. Their morally incorruptible quality makes them the only reasonable faction to be able to govern the city as political leaders. Because of their apparent submissive nature, it oftentimes allow other factions to think of them as weak.
The main goal of Abnegation is to forget yourself and serve others, so they wear gray to be less noticeable. Abnegation clothes are very baggy. Gray robes are also common among members and children. Women usually pin up their hair and men have it cut short.
Candor:
" Truth makes us transparent. Truth makes us strong. Truth makes us inextricable. "
-Candor Manifesto
Candor was a faction formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception, who believed that dishonesty is the key fault in human nature which began evil and war. They believe in the principle that honesty and openness would lead to a more peaceful and perfect society.
Candor are serious about their views on honesty against dishonesty. Some might describe the Candor as being honest to a fault — even, in some cases, so honest as to be insulting. But a true member of the Candor faction would rather insult someone then stoop to lying; likewise, a member of Candor would rather be insulted than lied to. They view complete and utter honesty as the ultimate perfection.
The Candor believe that the truth is black-and-white, so that is what they wear. Typically they dress formally, with suits and ties being standard uniform with men and women seen in long skirts, while their everyday clothing is typically black pants and white shirts. They greet each other by shaking hands.
Erudite:
" 'Ignorance' is defined not as stupidity but as lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding. "
- Erudite Manifesto
Erudite was formed by those who blamed human ignorance for the faults of society. They formed Erudite as a way of eliminating ignorance and darkness from human minds. Erudite values the virtue of intelligence and wisdom over any other. The members focus their lives on the pursuit of knowledge. Erudite are expected to delegate themselves in the library reading books, or, most commonly, reading something from the computer. They are also known to have memorized the city map. Members are also known to be particularly eloquent. Because of the Erudite's thirst for knowledge, they are the ones easily susceptible to moral corruption as knowledge leads to lust for power.
Each member must wear at least one article of blue clothing per day. Erudite's main color is blue, as it is a "calming color that helps stimulate the brain". Also, most faction members wear thick glasses to make them seem smarter.
" Give freely, trusting that you will be given what you need... Do not be angry. The opinions of others cannot damage you... The wrong is past. You must let it rest where it lies... You must no longer think cruel thoughts. Cruel thoughts lead to cruel words, and hurt you as much as they hurt their target. "
-Amity Manifesto
Amity is the faction that dislikes war. They formed Amity in order to have a peaceful society free from conflict and sadness caused by wars and instigation.
As the faction that symbolizes happiness and freedom from human conflict, members generally wear clothing that is bright and pleasant. Their attire consists of clothes that are red and yellow. Their dress code is less formal than other factions and an Erudite transfer could wear blue jeans without causing uproar.
Dauntless: " We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another... We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves. "
-Dauntless Manifesto
Dauntless was a faction formed by those who blamed cowardice for society's problems. The only answer is to face your fears and find bravery. The Dauntless value the virtue of bravery over any other, as such they train to fight and use weapons to prepare their bodies to respond to threats and challenges, which is necessary if they want to survive life as a Dauntless member. The faction also emphasizes the idea of freedom from fear, and test this daily by attempting death-defying feats. Dauntless members and initiates are the only ones allowed to ride the train and do so in a daring way; jumping onto and off the train while it is moving.
The Dauntless are the only faction that have their members, upon reaching a certain age that hinders their ability to uphold the virtue of their faction, become Factionless or choose to die. Hence, the faction does not have a member that is of old-age.
Dauntless always dress in black. The women wear skin-tight pants, tights, tight dresses, and black boots and shoes. The men wear black pants and form-fitting shirts. Dauntless like to tattoo and pierce their bodies. Girls might wear dark eyeliner and makeup. They might also dye their hair unusual colors.
This RP will be focusing on Dauntless initiates, just so you know. It'd be difficult to do all of the groups since none of them interact with one another, and Dauntless has the best initiation process. Your character may be Dauntless-born or they can have transferred from any other faction of your choosing.
Rules:
→No Godmodding, obviously. There could be quite a bit of action, but don't take the oppurtunity to control other people's characters. On a related note, dodging every attack is also not an option.
→Don't make your character overpowered. Someone from Amity isn't going to be a spectacular fighter. Just add flaws and stuff, okay?
→My character will be the only Divergent. I say this because otherwise everyone will end up making a character with Divergence and it will be messy. If you REALLY want to, we can talk it out through PM.
→Characters must be accepted before you begin roleplaying. There's no limit.
→I don't know if people will join this, but if you do; please stick with it and I'll love you.
→My responses might be slow. I'm sorry, I can't do anything about that.

Wow, you really have a lid on this thing. What's your secret? Mellow jazz, bongo drums, huge bag of weed? - Tony Stark, The Avengers
The table of Abnegation members is silent as they await the Aptitude Test. Helena's eyes drift lazily across the room. She rests her head on the palm of her left hand. The rest of her faction seem happy to wait quietly as they concentrate on a particular spot on the table, hands placed neatly atop their laps. She notices the Amity, how they laugh and chatter and sing rhyming songs. It must be nice to be so peaceful and not have to worry. Next she examines the Erudite, many of whom are engrossed in newspapers. The others seem to be discussing something they find interesting. Right next to the Erudite sit the Candor, who talk loudly and express their feelings through extravagant hand gestures. Though they seem to be arguing, Helena can tell that they aren't angry at one another by the small smiles on their faces. Finally, she watches the Dauntless. They don't seem frightened at all as they laugh and talk and play cards. How could they not be afraid? They were only going to be told where they belong.
But that wasn't why Helena was afraid. No one could prepare you for the test, because you weren't told what it was going to be like. Would it be like a written test, or physical? Her eyes widen as her brother Jonah emerges from the doors, looking quite confident. She wants to ask him how he did, what she could expect, but he just walks straight past her. If Jonah had been called, that meant that-
"Helena Lue-Elling!"
Helena averts her gaze towards the doors where a woman dressed in black stands. Dauntless. If the tattoos and piercings hadn't given it away, her dress sense did. Body-hugging, tight-fitted black clothing and clunky boots. Helena felt out of place as she stood next to the smiling woman who introduced herself as Laura. Up close, Helena notices that Laura was not that much older than herself. Maybe nineteen, or twenty.
"You can't be tested by someone from your own faction. The rest of the testers are Abnegation volunteers, except for me and one other Dauntless." Laura grins down at Helena, obviously trying to make the young brunette feel less afraid. Helena appreciates the gesture, but it doesn't stop the constant thumping of her heart against her chest.
In a dimly-lit room, a chair stands next to a complex-looking machine. Helena is reminded of a dentist surgery. She sits as Laura gestures for her to do so, inhaling and exhaling heavily and slowly. As Laura hooks her up to the machine, Helena is still left clueless about how the test will go. Will they read her mind to see where she belongs and learn that she is not selfless? Or peaceful, or brave, or honest, or even smart. I am Factionless. I will be Factionless.
"I'm hooking you up to a simulation." Laura explains, her voice making Helena jump, "The computer puts you into a scenario. Your result will be decided on how you respond." Noticing the young Abnegation girl's worried expression, Laura laughs, "Don't worry, it's perfectly safe." As Laura injects a needle into Helena's arm, the world fades to black.
When she opens her eyes once more, Helena finds herself in a room that looks just like the cafeteria in school, but instead its empty. All that's left is a table where a knife and a wedge of cheese lay side by side. Struggling to remember what Laura had told her, Helena racks her brains. Something about this being a simulation?
A stern female voice surprises her as it speaks out from nowhere, "Choose one." Helena searches wildly for the one who speaks. Finding no one in the room other than herself, she gulps before asking,
"Why?"
"Choose one." the voice speaks once more, this time more insistent. But instead of doing as it asks, Helena simply stares at the two items before her until the woman tuts, "Fine! Have it your way!" the knife and cheese disappear, leaving Helena in a completely empty room. The door behind her swings open and Helena twirls on the balls of her feet rapidly, eyes widening as a vicious looking dog emits a growl. It bares it's teeth, staring her down. Helena feels like her feet are frozen to the ground and she tries not to panic as the animal begins to charge. Suddenly, Helena remembers something she learnt in class a long time ago. It was in her textbooks, about submitting to animals. Taking a deep breath, Helena forces herself onto her knees and then to the floor. Avoiding eye contact with the canine, the Abnegation girls simply lays there for a while, praying that this is right until she hears a growl in her ear. This wasn't right, she was going to die, she had done it wrong. But then Helena feels a wet tongue glide across her cheek. The dog barks happily as it continues to lap at Helena's face and as she sits up she begins to laugh herself. Her relief is short-lived however as she hears a high-pitched squeal.
"DOGGIE!"
Helena's horrified gaze moves to a young grinning girl who throws her arms into the air and chants the word 'doggie' several times, thinking the beast is going to hug her. But the dog has it's teeth bared and it begins to foam at the mouth, and Helena knows it will tear her to pieces. The Abnegation girl's reaction is quicker than the beast as she darts forward, but the dog isn't far behind. As the vicious canine overtakes her, Helena throws herself at the dog without a second thought and tackles it to the floor.
The world around her fizzles out once more and when Helena opens her eyes again, she's standing on one of the bus carriages she uses to get to school. It's empty once more, until a man with severe burns across his face enters. In his left hand, he holds a newspaper. Helena simply watches as he sits and begins to read, her heart rate trying to calm itself down from the last scenario. Eventually, the man pipes up in a gruff voice, "Do you know this person?" he shows Helena the front cover of the newspaper where a photograph of a man who has been charged with murder fills the page. Helena feels as if he recognises the criminal, but she cannot place a name. A feeling erupts in the pit of her stomach and her instinct tells her to lie, "Well, do you?!" as she shakes her head, the burnt man becomes angry, "If you tell me who he is, you can help me. Look what he did to me, I need to show him!" if Helena were selfless, she would tell him no matter what the consequences, but her gut tells her that if she tells the truth, something bad will happen.
And so with the most convincing voice she can muster, Helena looks the man straight in the eye and says, "I already told you, I don't know him."
That's when the simulation ends and Helena sits up abruptly in her chair, blinking confusedly. She looks to Laura, who's previous grin has been replaced with a frown. Helena coughs before choking out, "How did I do?" Laura continues to stare at her for several moments, before eventually speaking in a low voice,
Divergent. Helena had never heard the word before. Laura spins around in her chair and begins typing into the computer rapidly. It's about a minute before she turns her attention back to the confused girl, "Most people only get one result from the machine. In fact, we made it so that you can only get one result. But you- you got. . . three."
"Three?" Helena chokes out. Laura nods before explaining,
"You didn't take the knife - which was a Dauntless response - or the cheese - which would have been Amity. So you didn't rule one of them out. Then you submitted to the dog, which was an Erudite response. And finally you threw yourself at the dog, which was both an Abnegation and Dauntless response." Laura seems to be involuntarily shaking her head, "I put you into another scenario, hoping you'd maybe be able to rule out other factions but it didn't work. I've reported your results manually as Abnegation, okay?" Helena nods, though she wonders what's so bad about being Divergent. And if it is so bad, why is Laura protecting her? As she gets up to leave, Laura calls her one last time, "Helena?"
Helena spins around to face her and Laura grimaces, "You can't tell anyone." Helena gulps before asking her final question,
"What if they already know?"
Laura has no answer to that and Helena feels her heart begin to pick up the pace once more as she exits the room.
"Isaac Hampton" one of the instructors calls to the room of waiting people. Isaac stands up and puts his book down on the table as he makes his way to the test room. "Isaac, I am..." the instructor begins, but is interrupted "does it matter? really I know what is gonna happen, you are to administer a test of some sort and I am to be deemed an erudite, really I am only going along with this because it is mandatory, if not for that I would already be back at the library gaining even more knowledge then I already have." Isaac says arrogantly. the instructor smirks as he leads Isaac to the chair and hooks him up to the device. "this test won't be a written exam, it is a simulation." he says as the machine turns on and Isaac's eyes close. he opens them and finds himself in a burning building. he instantly gets down low to avoid smoke, and makes his way to the door. he takes the edge of his sleeve to test the doorknob and see if it is hot, as he touches it, the heat seeps through the cloth and Isaac pulls his hand away fast. he turns and faces the window. he grabs a chair which is in the corner and throws it through the window, jumping to the side of the window in case of back-draft. he looks out and sees that he is only four floors up. he turns to a corner of the room where a bed is and pulls off all it's sheets and covers. he ties them end to end, then ties one end to the bed post. he throws the makeshift rope out the window and begins to climb out. he smiles as he is now home free. he gets ready to touch the ground with his feet, completing his test, when he hears the screams for help from the second floor. he looks down to the ground "I'm so close. I just need to touch down on the ground and I can go back to the library, even get into the erudite section." he thinks to himself "besides, this is a sim, she isn't real." he thinks again, but as he is thinking this the girl screams again, this time in pain and he instantly starts climbing back up. "stupid, stupid, stupid. I'm so stupid for this!" he yells as he jumps through the window and finds the girl huddled under her bed. he reaches out to her "don't worry, I'm here to help you." he says, grabbing her and putting her on his back "hey, hold on tight, ok?" he says, she nods as he grabs his makeshift rope and climbs back down to the ground. the moment his feet touch the ground everything goes dark. the simulation is over and he opens his eyes in the real world. "well, a surprising performance from a erudite, I must say" the instructor says "well, from someone who WANTS to be a erudite anyway." he smirks as he shows him his test results. "dau...DAUNTLESS!? but....I....come on, I couldn't just leave her there, I used my brain to save her right? so I..." Isaac starts, but the instructor stops him "you ran into a burning building, risking life and limb for that girl. it was brave. Stupid, but brave. perfect for a dauntless." he says as he escorts him out of the room.
Isobel appears to be in a heated discussion with another Candor member when her name is called. Forced to stop in mid-sentence, the girl dressed in black and white stands and whirled around to face the Abnegation volunteer who has summoned her. Rolling her eyes, the Candor girl strides her way towards the door without even waiting for an introduction from the test administrator. Candor and Abnegation didn't really get along; the selfless would lie if they thought the truth was not beneficial to others, and Candor seek only the truth.
Once in the room, Isobel seems calm but her heart beats quickly. Taking a seat she sighs and attempts to relax, steadying her breathing as the administrator hooks her up to the machine, explaining to her that it's just a simulation. Isobel's eyes widen however as the plain woman dressed in grey pulls out a large looking needle. The administrator laughs rather plainly before speaking, "I would tell you that it doesn't hurt much, but apparently the Candor don't like to be lied to." Isobel doesn't have enough time to respond before the world fades to black.
When she opens her eyes, Isobel is laying on the floor of a speeding train carriage. She struggles to keep her balance as she gets to her feet and clutches her head. It's then that a man in a black and white suit enters - Candor. His face is plain with not very distinguishable features. If Isobel were to see him again, she would not recognise him. "You have something for me." the man speaks with no emotion; his voice is almost robotic, "The package - in your pocket." Surely enough, when Isobel's hand travels subconsciously to her pocket, she can feel something. It's not for him - it's for someone else. Don't give it to him. You need it. Isobel has to bite her tongue to stop herself from blurting out the truth. She shakes her head,
"No, I don't have anything for you."
"You're lying." the man tells her sternly, holding out his hand, "Give it to me. Isobel stares him down defiantly, and it's then that emotion rushes into his voice; sadness and desperation, "Please, I'm very ill. It's the only cure - please, please..." Isobel's eyes widen. Anyone selfless or loving would give it to him no matter what in this situation, but Isobel is neither of those things.
"I told you, I don't have anything." she speaks firmly, and then the world fades once more.
This time, a gun with one bullet is laid out on a table in an empty room. Glancing around nervously, Isobel is unsure of what to do and so uncertainly, she takes ahold of it and then-
"Shoot one!" a voice commands in her ear. Isobel's eyes widen as she sees her family before her, blindfolds across their faces and hands tied behind backs. She lets out something that sounded like a sob before the voice speaks once more, this time a whisper, "Go on, they don't know it's you. You can do it, it'll be easy. Shoot one, or I will."No, you can't. Isobel aims the gun and squeezes her eyes shut. She whispers three words.
"I'm not afraid." Isobel releases the trigger and shoots herself, and the world fades to black once more.
Isobel wakes up breathing heavily. For a moment, the fear had been so real that she had forgotten it was a simulation. Beside her, the Abnegation volunteer taps something into the computer,
"Interesting result for a Candor. . . Apparently, honesty and bravery go hand in hand." the woman chirps brightly at Isobel who doesn't even smile back. The young girl just stands up and straightens herself out before exiting the testing room leaving the Abnegation staring after her.
(I guess we wait for Prussia, then we can get to actual initiation~!)
"Zayln Marko." Zayln looks up from her friend and sees an Abnegation volunteer motioning for. As she stands she grins at her friend. "Wish me luck!" Her friend laughs as she skips toward the Abnegation woman. "Hi! How are you?" She asked the woman as she was lead into a room and sat on a chair. "I think today is more about you, than it is me." She replied. Zayln rolled her eyes. "You Abnegation and your refusal to socialize. I swear!" The woman laughed lightly as she got Zayln ready. "Good luck." Was the last thing she heard before everything went black.
Zayln opened her eyes and saw she was moving. Looking around she realized she was in a train car. "Cool!" She yelled. She looked around and saw only one other person was with her. This person seemed very familiar but she couldn't figure out why. With a shrug of her shoulders she dismissed it. She stuck her head out of the car and laughed. "Jump!" The person next to her instructed. She whipped her head around to look at them, but no one was there. "Where'd he go?" She asked. She felt something push against her side and looked down. Her little sister smiled up at her. "Jump!" She yelled with a grin. "Fat chance!" Zayln yelled back. "Are you afraid?" Marcy asked. Zayln looked at her, knowing she was terrified and said, "No! Of course not!" Suddenly her and her sister were grabbed from behind and had rope around their wrists. Two men in black glared at her. "Jump or the little girl goes!" And they held Marcy out of the car. Marcy screamed. Zayln felt rage rush through her veins and kicked one of the men. "Don't touch my sister!" The one holding Marcy, brought her back in and dropped her, before rushing at Zayln. Zayln kicked him in the nuts, then shoved him off the train. The other guy, knowing he was next tried to run. But Zayln got her before he could. She kicked him in the back, laughing when she yelled in pain, and shoved him off too. Then the black was back.
When Zayln opened her eyes for a second time and the Abnegation woman was smiling gently at her. "You were very surprising." She said, looking at the computer. "What?" Zayln was confused. Why was she surprising? The woman looked back at her, then turned the screen to her. "I'm Dauntless?" She asked in confusion. When the woman nodded, Zayln grinned. "Sweet! Now I'm aloud get a tattoo!" She stood up, with the woman's help, and skipped out of the room.

Wow, you really have a lid on this thing. What's your secret? Mellow jazz, bongo drums, huge bag of weed? - Tony Stark, The Avengers
Helena had heard murmurs and gasps as her blood sizzled on the coals of Dauntless. Of course there would be talk; neither of the Lue-Elling children had stayed with their parents. To everyone's surprise, selfless Jonah had chosen to join the Erudite, and Helena wondered if she had ever known him at all. She had never known him to be curious or knowledge-seeking. But she had little time to consider this as initiation apparently began immediately.
With the other Dauntless initiates, Helena runs with little regard for health and safety. She lags behind, unable to keep up with most of them. No, she's come this far - she's not left her family to become factionless. Up ahead, she sees the train only the Dauntless ride and the initiates hopping up into it. Most of them are Dauntless-born but there are several transfers. It takes all of her strength, but she picks up the pace and changes direction to follow the train. She panics as carriages speed past her and she almost trips on her long, grey skirt - the only reminder she now has of Abnegation. As far as she knows, she's the only transfer from her own faction; everyone else seems to have more suitable clothes. As someone grabs her hand, Helena gasps as she is pulled into the carriage by small hands.

"You alright, Stiff?" Isobel addresses the girl she has helped into the train, eyes intently taking in her attire. Long, grey and baggy, showing off very little of her figure. The Candor girl wears her faction's colours of black and white - a tight fitting top and loose trousers. The Abnegation transfer doesn't seem to appreciate the derogatory term, but she thanks her all the same before making herself comfortable next to Isobel. "I'm Isobel by the way." everyone always said Isobel said too much, even in her own faction, "Transferred from Candor." the dark-haired girl grinned, showing off pearly whites.
"Helena." Isobel smiled brightly at the new girl before turning towards the others within the carriage. Mostly Dauntless-born, but plenty of transfers.
Isaac walks into the cabin with Isabel and Helena "two girls in a train all by themselves? People might start talking." He jokes "Could I sit with you? The other cabins are taken and I feel like staying with other transfers." He says.
