I am surprised that there aren't more comments about the news that a moon bases should be built soon. Are we so engrossed with problems on Earth that we forget to look elsewhere at times?

Wow, that is total BS. They are 16, they knew what they were doing. They obviously both wanted to take pictures. They didn't give them out to anyone but themselves. So lets arrest them. Great idea. Let's worry about drug dealers, and bank robbers, not two 16-year olds taking pictures of themselves having a good time.

From Thread: RAID Technology Part 2: RAID Levels Old Sat Feb 10, 2007 8:56:34 AM
I think Raid 0+1 is extremely wasteful. Plus, the extra layer probably introduces all sorts of latencies, canceling effects somewhat.

Fun fact: Identical hard drives don't necessarily take the exact same time to complete the same tasks. Hard drives use moving parts and as a result, things don't happen exactly the same between drives (or if a drive needs to do an ECC for a sector).

From Thread: RAID Technology Part 1 Old Sat Feb 10, 2007 8:46:30 AM
BTW: Mirroring may have a writing performance hit, but it give you a big gain while reading because both disks (should) have the same information.

Also, "When RAID is not": Please note that RAID is no substitute for real backup, through tape or CD-R. It creates redundancy, not retainership. If you accidentaly mess up your partitions, format your drives, or if your file system breaks down, you will have redundant errors on multiple drives.

From Thread: Logitech G7 Black Gaming Mouse Old Sat Feb 10, 2007 8:35:11 AM
I hear that the Logitec laser mice have had problems with shiner surfaces/mouse pads such as the icemats. However, there was a recent firmware update that many people have reported as fixing these issues.

Personally, I've got a G5, the G7 wired counter part. Where the G7 has the battery, the G5 has adjustable weights, which is pretty nice as you can change how the mouse feels. It's also got a clothy/nylon cord instead of the normal rubber cords and it reduces a lot of friction.

»OLPC Taking an Old Approach to Move Forward

OLPC's computers have a good security approach. However, it limits the ability to integrate programs. If someone can now find a way to maintain OLPC's security with Apple's seamless integration we would get that much closer to the ultimate OS. Sometimes in order to move forward, one has to take a step back. http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,72669-0.html?tw=wn_index_1

Quote

"Krstic's system, known as the BitFrost platform, has only one user prompt (turning on the camera) and imposes limits on every program's powers. Under BitFrost, every program runs in its own virtual machine with a limited set of permissions. Thus a picture viewer can't access the web, so even if a hacker comes up with an exploit that lets him control the program, he couldn't use it to grab all the photos on the laptop and upload them to the internet. Programs downloaded to the computer can't "request a set of permissions that let (them) do bad things," Krstic said, unless that software has been certified by a trusted authority, which will be either One Laptop Per Child or one of the countries signed onto the project. Users can, however, manually assign more power to a particular program through the security control panel. While the idea of limiting permissions program by program dates back as far as 1959, according to Krstic, it's not been adopted widely because it puts the burden on application writers to deal with security. Other Linux/Unix-based systems -- including Apple's Mac OS -- run programs with authority limited to a local user, but that's not enough, said Krstic, because the program can still delete user files, even if it can't touch the underlying system files. Krstic's no fan of Microsoft's security, either -- despite Vista's imposition of limited permissions on programs, and its isolation of Internet Explorer in a virtual sandbox. "Vista's sandboxing is trying to impale sandboxing on something broken," Krstic said. Still, Krstic admits there's a drawback to his system: It limits interactions between applications."

From Thread: Space mirrors could help martian colonization Old Thu Feb 8, 2007 12:27:10 AM
Another idea for 'terraforming' Mars was thought up by Carl Sagan in the late 70s. He mentioned that 'injecting' algae (I can't remember which species specifically) into the upper atmosphere would simply raise the levels of oxygen and greenhouse gases on Mars, rendering it suitable for life as we know it on Earth, i.e., both breathable and warm enough. It's an interesting suggestion, but I haven't heard from it since...

»RIAA Completely Misses Jobs\' Point.

Regardless of Jobs' intentions, it was pretty obvious that he wanted DRM removed from future music. However, the RIAA seems to be clouded in the veil of their own stupidity, as they though he was pushing to use Apple's standard of DRM!

Bit Player reports that our old friends at the RIAA issued a response today lauding Apple's offer to license FairPlay as a "welcome breakthrough" that would be a "real victory for fans, artists and labels." There's only one problem: Jobs didn't offer to license FairPlay at all. In fact, he makes it pretty clear that he thinks that switching to an open model for DRM wouldn't work...

Hilarious.

They put out way way way way way way too many variations of the RAZR and many of them don't sell. Meanwhile, Nokia has thinned down to GSM only and sells high-end phones exclusively on thier site and at their stores.

That being said, Nokia's going to bring back side talking. ><

It's been very rare that I have heard a cover and thought it was done very well.

By the way, if you're talking about that 311 cover of The Cure that came out with that terrible Adam Sandler movie I'm going to have to disagree with you. 311 can't even make their own songs sound good.

Yeah but it just kinda fucked the hardcore guilds over at the time.
I guess I just don't see a way that they could avoid doing that and making the expansion still interesting. I was a new raider (just started raiding in December) and was disappointed to see all my purples get swapped out for quest rewards - but then again, it put us back into leveling mode and I've enjoyed it so far.
