They should be if they're not. I mean, the only downside is predators catching on and cutting the shoes off the kids. I like that it's a portable from one shoe to the next for kids.

I thought the movie was so-so. I didn't think much of it either way. I'm sure that most people I know believe that Jesus was a man that was Jewish.

I guess being Jewish, it was harder for me to understand some of the symbolism.

I thought it was a pretty good movie. I couldn't get through the book, unfortunately.

From Thread: Could this be Planet Dune? Old Fri Mar 2, 2007 2:41:44 AM
IIRC it only takes ~200 years for a planet infested with them to become dune like, and a bit longer for all surface water to be hidden completely. IIRC Dune isn't found for another 2k years and even then it's settled by the zensunnis, people (read as: Guild, Bene Gesserit, etc) don't discover the spice until around 10,000 years from now. 200 BG or so.

And if you have a panel from all disicplines, who picks the people to be on the panel?

Probably the same way that the experts who award Nobel prizes are selected. By picking people who have a proven and outstanding track record of expertise in their field. Of course, you'll never eliminate human error.

»California Eyes OpenDoc

California has introduced a bill to mandate that government documents be preserved in an open format. It seems that some state governments understand the terrible concept of vendor lock-in.

Quote

The bill was introduced on Friday by Assemblyman Mark Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco, and read on the floor of the state Legislature on Monday. The bill is not yet scheduled for a vote, according to Leno's office, but if passed could go into effect as soon as January 1, 2008. AB 1668's wording particularly excludes the use of proprietary file formats used only by one application, such as those found naturally in Microsoft's Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

So did he think he can just go into a foreign country and abduct somebody with no consequences? I think he'd probably have to file papers or produce a warrant before he just grabbed the guy.

It's all about the ratings.

Well, if he's extradited to Mexico and is found guilty, it'll be all about the sentence.

This is for the new movie. I think they should have gone with an entirely new era. We need another series as well.

They screwed up Enterprise at the end.

I never caught on to Enterprise, but I think they should have moved into another era for the new movie. Maybe I series will do that.

From Thread: AMD's Onboard Graphics Chips Old Wed Feb 28, 2007 5:37:21 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»AMD\'s Onboard Graphics Chips

We knew it was coming. Though, it's a bit disappointing that the graphics chips won't be for gamers. However, I do see the business side of what AMD is doing here. With these chips built onto boards, PC's will become fully "Vista Ready" without the need for a separate graphics card. This lowers the cost of "Vista Ready PCs." It'll be very popular in the mid and low end PC market, and a big win for AMD. AMD needed to find some way to create new revenue to fund further R and D. This way they can compete with Intel's Core 2 Duo, which is by far the best processor on the market today..... http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/16800947.htm

Quote

"Advanced Micro Devices will announce today the first fruits of its $5.4 billion acquisition of graphics chip maker ATI Technologies -- a new graphics chipset. The development is an initial step toward the ultimate goal of the merger: combining onto a single chip the functions of the microprocessor, the brains that orchestrate a computer's operations, with those of the graphics processor. AMD said the new graphics chipset, the AMD 690, can be placed onto the main motherboard of the PC, eliminating the need for an add-in graphics card to handle three-dimensional graphics. Sunnyvale-based AMD said the new chipset, available in March, should help lower the cost of graphics-capable computers. More than 30 motherboard makers plan to work with the new chipset, AMD said."

From Thread: CompUSA Closing Most Stores Old Wed Feb 28, 2007 3:41:32 AM
That's weird, I knew they were struggling, but to close stores on that short of a notice sounds more like creditors seizing assets than a well planned store closing.
Their press release says they will get a $400 million cash infusion out of the deal (something they can burn through pretty quickly with 100 stores and their on-line operations)

When I first read the list I thought that was the stores that were closing, but it's actually the ones that will survive (for now) I guess I'll have to go see what the liquidators are blowing out, we have/had too many COMPUSA's around here, some just a couple miles apart. (some were Good Guy's stores they converted to regular CompUSA stores)
I won't miss their incompatent staff, but they did have some pretty good sales/rebates (regular prices were way too high)
