Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition Receives Grant From Verizon to Assist Victims of Domestic Violence
Attorney General Jon Bruning Takes Part in Check Presentation
LINCOLN, Neb., Aug. 24 -- Nebraska domestic violence prevention advocates will learn how to use the latest technology to help keep abuse survivors safe, thanks to a new partnership between the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition (NDVSAC) and Verizon.
Funded through a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, the new program will offer face-to-face and web-based seminars designed to educate domestic violence advocates throughout Nebraska on the use of cutting-edge technology. They will then share this critical information with domestic violence survivors, support groups and law enforcement officials in their communities.
"The Coalition is pleased to partner with Verizon, a corporate leader in supporting innovative solutions to end domestic violence," said Lynne Lange, NDVSAC's executive director. " It is critical that we help educate advocates on the ground to harness the benefits of technology and increase their capacity to serve victims and survivors."
Providing more resources for those advocates who directly work with the survivors of domestic violence, makes sense for Verizon, according to Seamus Hyland, president-Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless. "This initiative will enable victims and survivors throughout Nebraska to become familiar with the latest communications tools," said Hyland.
"I applaud the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition (NDVSAC) and Verizon for coming together to provide survivors with life-saving information," said Attorney General Jon Bruning. "Partnerships like these make a positive impact on the communities they serve."
Verizon Wireless has supported domestic violence awareness and prevention efforts over the last decade through the company's award-winning HopeLine® phone recycling program. Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories, in any condition, from any wireless service provider. Phones that can be refurbished are sold for reuse and those without value are disposed of in an environmentally sound way. All proceeds benefit non-profit shelters and organizations that focus on domestic violence awareness and prevention. Over the last five years, Nebraskans have donated more then 25,000 phones to HopeLine and since the program began more then 7 million phones have been recycled or refurbished.
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational website, Verizon Thinkfinity (http://www.thinkfinity.org), and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2009, the Verizon Foundation awarded $67.9 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. It also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $26.1 million in combined contributions to nonprofits. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation's largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 5 million hours of community service since 2000. For more information on the foundation, visit http://www.verizonfoundation.org.

Following on the heels of the publication of The Necromancer (May, 2010), the e-book original is a short story that will fascinate fans. "With the exception of the two teen characters, Michael Scott's series is based entirely on individuals transplanted from history, mythology, folklore, and legend," explains Beverly Horowitz, Delacorte publisher. "Michael's new e-book original is certain to entertain fans and satisfy them as they wait until the publication of the next book in the six-part series, The Warlock (2011)." For more information about Michael Scott and the series visit Facebook.com/SecretsofNicholasFlamel. Fans can also play the online game at QuestfortheCodex.com.
THE DEATH OF JOAN OF ARC: A Lost Story from the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel is available wherever e-books are sold.

Instead, she was rescued from death by Scathach the Warrior. The truth about that day is revealed in the last will and testament of William of York. Scott's new short story will leave readers wondering if Joan of Arc still roams the Earth today. This e-book original offers a never-before-seen story of two warriors who would become sisters.

Nexus Recognized by Cisco as a Video Surveillance Authorized Technology Provider
VALENCIA, Calif., Aug 24 -- Nexus announced today that it has achieved Video Surveillance Authorized Technology Provider (ATP) status from Cisco. This designation recognizes Nexus as having fulfilled the training requirements and program prerequisites to design, resell, install and maintain a full range of video surveillance and access-control solutions.
Cisco® physical-security solutions provide network-centric capabilities to video surveillance, Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, electronic access control and other groundbreaking technologies by converging voice, data and physical security into a single appliance. This enables customers to preserve existing investments in analog-based technology and to use the network as a platform upon which more collaborative and integrated physical-security systems can be built. As customers converge physical-security infrastructures and operations and begin using the network as a platform, they gain rapid access to relevant information and increase interoperability with other IP-centric systems. This enables higher levels of situational awareness in environments where intelligent and timely decision making is crucial.
"At Nexus, we engineer and deploy technology-based systems that protect the people, places and things that are important, providing security as a service of the network. Our Physical Security team includes individuals with combined experience spanning decades," said Mike Heiman, Nexus Vice President of Engineering. "We're pleased to become a Cisco Video Surveillance ATP Partner, and look forward to expanding our physical security solutions as part of our complete portfolio of advanced technology offerings."
"As we move into new markets and emerging technologies, the Cisco Authorized Technology Provider Partners are instrumental in helping our customers turn innovative technology into a competitive advantage," said Steve Benvenuto, director of emerging technologies for worldwide channels at Cisco. "As a Cisco Video Surveillance ATP Partner, Nexus brings a unique set of skills to potential customers, combining a proven physical-security track record with Cisco expertise."
To qualify for the Video Surveillance ATP Program, Nexus had to meet a number of requirements, from having staff who fulfill specific job responsibilities to achieving the Cisco Express Foundation Specialization. Those requirements are designed to help a partner maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
The Cisco ATP Program is a key part of Cisco's emerging technology go-to-market strategy. The program helps define the knowledge, skills and services that channel partners need to successfully sell, deploy and support a subject technology. As markets mature and technologies progress along the adoption curve, some ATP programs may migrate to Cisco specializations.

Verizon Launches Campaign to Encourage More Residential Phone Customers to Switch to Online Billing
'Great Paper Escape' Sweepstakes Will Give Away $10,000 Grand Prize, Other Daily Instant Prizes for Those Converting to Paperless Bills
NEW YORK, Aug. 24 -- In a new initiative to encourage thousands more customers to switch to environmentally friendly online billing, Verizon has launched the Great Paper Escape sweepstakes. Featured is a grand prize of $10,000 to a Verizon customer who switches to paperless billing by Dec. 31, 2010.
The goal is to motivate about a quarter of a million Verizon customers to join the nearly 2.4 million customers who already receive their monthly bills online. The sweepstakes is but one front in an ongoing Verizon campaign to reduce the environmental impact of the company's business operations around the world.
"Earlier this year Verizon launched a comprehensive sustainability program to help our company and our customers reduce their impact on the environment and to conserve energy," said James Gowen, Verizon chief sustainability officer. "Through the Great Paper Escape sweepstakes we're offering customers an easy and fun way to reduce their carbon footprints while also providing a faster, more secure and clutter-free way to pay their bills."
Consumers who make the switch to receive and pay their bills online by Dec. 31 will be entered to win a grand prize of $10,000. Customers who sign up to just receive their bills online (paperless billing) will earn an entry in the grand prize drawing -- and a second entry if they enroll in a Verizon automatic payment plan. Verizon customers already enrolled in paperless billing and auto pay also will receive sweepstakes entries.
In addition to the grand-prize sweepstakes entries, customers signing up for paperless billing will have an opportunity to play the daily instant-win game and be eligible to win prizes ranging from reusable and environmentally friendly tote bags to an energy-efficient washer-dryer combo. Other daily prizes will include $50 Verizon Perks gift cards and a Trek Eco Urban bicycle. Existing paperless-billing customers also are eligible for the daily instant-win game.
In 2009, more than 27 million Verizon paper bills were replaced by online bills, and this June alone, Verizon customers made more than 8 million electronic bill payments.
Starting this week, customers can enter the Great Paper Escape sweepstakes and instant win game by either visiting http://greatpaperescape.verizon.com/ or by logging in to their Verizon account at http://myverizon.com/ and enrolling in paper-free billing and an automatic bill payment service.
By going paper-free, customers can obtain instant online account status and receive reminder payment notices about their amount owed and due date; download and print their bill; and track the last 12 months of their bills for record-keeping purposes. When paying via Verizon's automatic pay service, all transactions are processed on a secure server.
Verizon has long been committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations and is helping its customers do the same. Since 2001, Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program has collected more than 7 million no-longer-used wireless phones and kept more than 200 tons of batteries and electronic waste out of landfills.
In April, Verizon launched a comprehensive sustainability program to find practical and innovative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of its global operations. The initiatives range from significantly increasing the number of alternative energy vehicles in the company's fleet to conducting trials of energy-efficient FiOS-TV set-top boxes to using more green products and services.
In addition, Verizon is the first telecommunications company to establish its own energy-efficiency standards for telecom equipment, requiring vendors to manufacture equipment that is 20 percent more efficient.

PLYMOUTH, Mich., Aug. 24 -- Independent developer and publisher Stardock released the much-awaited PC fantasy strategy title Elemental: War of Magic today. Elemental: War of Magic opens a world of magic and ancient lore as players begin the game as one of the few beings in the world still able to channel power from shards of magic - a series of mystical artifacts left over from a great cataclysm. You must decide how much of your power to imbue into your heroes as you build cities, explore dungeons, learn spells of ever-increasing power and negotiate with friends and foes.
Elemental: War of Magic is available at retail stores throughout North America starting today. The Limited Edition ($69.95) and the standard edition ($49.95) are also available via Stardock's digital distribution platform, Impulse (http://www.impulsedriven.com) or via the game's web site (http://www.elementalgame.com.)
This latest title from Stardock is heavily inspired by classic games from the golden age of PC gaming. The game's Lead Designer and CEO of Stardock Brad Wardell said, "The main idea behind Elemental was that we wanted to create gameplay that was both an advancement of the genre and a throwback to old-school gaming on the PC. Elemental: War of Magic accomplishes that and more."
Included with the game are a series of integrated modding tools allowing fans to create their own fantasy maps, monsters, tiles, effects and much more. The game's story-driven campaign, written by Random House's writing team, was made exclusively with the built-in modding tools.
Wardell continued, "The game allows players to strategize, customize and mod in depth while also providing straight-forward accessibility for those who just want to jump in and get in the game as quickly as possible."
Besides including the sand box game and campaign, Elemental also includes a multiplayer mode in which up to 16 players can play online while taking simultaneous turns. Players can save their multiplayer games online and return to them to continue in order to support players who wish to play more epic-sized games.
Also launching today is the companion novel to the PC title, ELEMENTAL: DESTINY'S EMBERS, written by Elemental: War of Magic Executive Producer Brad Wardell. The novel weaves a captivating tale that takes place in the land of Elemental, giving readers and players alike a unique perspective on the land in which they seek to rule in the game. The novel is available at bookstores nationwide from Random House's Del Rey publishing division.
Customers who purchase a copy of the book ELEMENTAL: DESTINY'S EMBERS will be able to download the additional, exclusive video game campaign, Elemental: Destiny's Embers. The campaign will release in four stages, with the first component being released in September.

National Instruments and Texas Instruments Deliver Affordable, Portable Educational Device for Engineering Students
NI myDAQ Provides Computer-based Instrumentation That Supports Hands-on Learning Anywhere, Anytime for Students and Institutions
AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 24, 2010 -- National Instruments (NASDAQ:NATI) today announced the release of the NI myDAQ portable instrumentation device for students in university engineering courses. NI myDAQ advances engineering education by making it possible for students to experience engineering outside of the lab, in their dorm room or anywhere they choose, at any time. The device is designed by National Instruments and features Texas Instruments analog circuits including data converters, amplifiers and interface and power management components. NI myDAQ hardware integrates with NI LabVIEW graphical development software to help reverse the trend of rising educational costs by giving students hands-on interaction with real analog circuits, sensor measurements and signal processing for about the price of an engineering textbook.
"Students need exposure to real circuits and hardware, but the problem for engineering professors is trying to meet the increasing cost of providing real electronics with continually tighter budgets," said Dr. Tony Ambler, chairman of electrical and computer engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. "NI myDAQ is inexpensive enough for every student to have their own, plug it into their laptop at home, in the dorm or in the park, and experiment with the real electronics all around them, without using lab time or lab equipment."
Compact enough to fit in a student's pocket and powered by USB connection, NI myDAQ provides a solution for college engineering professors who want their students to experiment during homework and beyond, through a student-owned measurement, signal processing and control device. NI myDAQ bridges the gap between theory and real-world practice by providing students eight LabVIEW software-based instruments including a digital multimeter (DMM), oscilloscope, function generator, Bode analyzer, dynamic signal analyzer, arbitrary waveform generator, digital reader and digital writer. Students can use all these instruments to perform many laboratory-style experiments.
When combined with LabVIEW on a PC, NI myDAQ delivers a complete solution for hands-on learning of core concepts in engineering curricula that include analog circuits, sensor measurements and signals and systems courses. Multiple universities throughout the United States already are developing NI myDAQ curricula, and National Instruments is making these and other resources available to educational institutions and students at http://www.ni.com/mydaq.
NI myDAQ also integrates with the NI Multisim circuits education environment to provide a far-reaching educational platform. The device includes the eight software-based instruments, DMM cables, an audio cable and a reusable storage tray. LabVIEW Student Edition software and Multisim Student Edition software also are available with the device at a significant discount to students.

"The new CookTek website is designed with the customer in mind," said Edward Nunn, CookTek's vice president of sales and marketing. Our easy-to-use site gives visitors access to product images, features and benefits, owners' manuals, spec sheets, videos, industry news, and much more."

More than 30,000 current college students voted for the "Top 10 for '10"
NEW YORK, Aug. 24 -- Unigo, the web's largest resource for student-written college reviews, today revealed their first-ever college rankings, the Top 10 for '10. More than 30,000 current college students from across the country contributed to the rankings, which name the top ten schools in ten unique categories. The lists represent a wide variety of institutions, and offer a more nuanced (and irreverent) look at their individual attributes.
The Top 10 for '10 include: "The New Ivies," the top 10 schools that are the next generation of excellence; "Never Lock Your Doors," the top 10 safest schools; "Life is But a Game," the top 10 schools where sports rule; and "No Last Call," the top 10 party schools. The full list of categories and schools is available at http://www.unigo.com/articles/top_10_in_2010.
Unigo surveyed students at 225 colleges for their opinions about their own schools and peer institutions. With more than 30,000 votes cast, the results were vetted by Unigo's editorial staff and educational advisory board to ensure accuracy. For each school on each list, current students sent in photos and supporting quotes, offering on-the-ground insights into why their school made the Top 10 for '10.
"Our goal with these rankings was to present high school students and parents with interesting, authentic insights into the experiences at these institutions as they begin their college research," said Unigo's CEO, Jordan Goldman. "Unigo is one of the world's largest resources for college information created by current college students, offering information you can't find anywhere else. These rankings were a natural fit."
More details, and the full rankings, are available at http://www.Unigo.com. The ten lists, with their supporting materials, will be rolled out on the site one per day, from August 25 through September 3.
About Unigo:
Unigo.com is the go-to resource for high school students and parents looking for authentic, up-to-date information about America's colleges. The site features tens of thousands of interactive college reviews created by the real experts - current college students. Unigo's college reviews were described by The New York Times Magazine as "...so evocative they make the one-page U.S. News summaries read like junk mail ... they are vivid in a way no guidebook can match."

Allied Telesis Firmware Upgrade for AT-9000 Series Increases Switch Efficiency
AT-S100 v2.0 Firmware Reduces Power Consumption, Enhances Security, Supports Voice VLAN, and Improves Network Diagnostics
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 24 -- Allied Telesis, a global provider of secure IP/Ethernet switching solutions and an industry leader in the deployment of converged multi-play networks, announced today the AT-S100 v2.0 firmware upgrade for its range of AT-9000 series eco-friendly Gigabit Layer-2 switches. The upgrade yields, on average, six-percent lower-power consumption, enabling the switch to run cooler, reducing the need for air conditioning, and lowering utility bills.
Allied Telesis has achieved even higher-power efficiency with the AT-S100 v2.0 easily installed upgrade for the AT-9000/28 port switch. Maximum power consumption is reduced by 7.5 percent to 29.5 watts and regular power consumption is reduced by 6.1 percent to 27.7 watts.
"We are helping businesses reduce CAPEX costs and reduce carbon footprints - a step towards achieving the reductions outlined in the Kyoto agreement," said Dael Bartlett, product strategy and marketing director, Allied Telesis, Inc. "Making the AT-9000/28 switch more efficient and reliable is one milestone in our continued effort to help customers 'go green.'"
The AT-S100 v2.0 firmware improves security by adding IEEE 802.1x support, allowing the new switch to be installed in networks where IT managers employ user authentication, higher security is required, and software such as Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) or Symantec Network Access Control (SNAC) is deployed. This ensures stored personal and financial data is fully protected, complying with Data Protection Acts and SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance) legislation. The AT-S100 v2.0 delivers improved Access Control Lists (ACLs) to allow network managers to define lists of approved or denied devices that can connect to their networks. It also incorporates SSLv3 (Secure Sockets Layer v3) and SSHv3 (Secure Shell v3) enhanced security on the management port for the Web graphical user interface (GUI) and a Telnet interface.
With the migration of phone systems from analog and digital systems to VoIP (Voice over IP), network infrastructures carrying voice traffic need support features and functions to ensure installation and a better user experience. The AT-S100 v2.0 features LLDP-MED (Link Layer Discovery Protocol - Media Endpoint Discovery) and voice VLANs (virtual local area networks) to ensure Quality of Service (QoS). Voice VLAN prioritizes voice traffic and LLDP-MED simplifies network set-up by automatically detecting when a VoIP phone is connected.
The enhanced switch also includes the sFlow specification mechanism that enables traffic monitoring on all ports, and reports this to an external sFlow collector application. With sFlow, network administrators gain improved network diagnostics, which aids in complex network management.
The AT-S100 v2.0 is available now.

NetEx and Veeam Software Partner to Provide Free WAN Optimization Software for New Veeam Backup & Replication Customers
MINNEAPOLIS and COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 24 -- NetEx®, the leader in WAN optimization software, and Veeam Software, innovative provider of data protection, disaster recovery and systems management solutions for VMware virtual datacenter environments, announced today they will partner to supply free HyperIP® software to customers who license Veeam Backup & Replication for VMware.
This exclusive agreement entitles Veeam users to a free one-year subscription to the 2Mb/s HyperIP (VM edition), a virtual appliance that improves the performance of moving large amounts of data across a WAN. Solution provider partners will be given the opportunity to deploy HyperIP with Veeam Backup & Replication beginning immediately. New customers who license Veeam Backup & Replication after July 1, 2010 are eligible for two complimentary 2Mb/s one-year subscriptions of HyperIP. The program will be available through July 2011.
The partnership addresses the challenges of varying network configurations and conditions that can be common in virtualization and cloud computing environments, including packet loss, latency, and jitter.
"NetEx and Veeam have a common goal of ensuring performance and reliability of VMware data protection and disaster recovery," said Ratmir Timashev, Veeam President and CEO. "We know that no matter how good the backup and replication software, network conditions can sometimes result in less-than-ideal results for customers, so we are happy that NetEx will provide its software-based WAN optimization solution to our customers in this exclusive free offer."
"Time and time again, we have proven how HyperIP extends the functionality of VMware, and Veeam's backup and replication product provides an excellent platform for demonstrating this to a new market," said Robert MacIntyre, Vice President, Business Development and Marketing at NetEx. Award-Winning Premium eGo Portable Hard Drive Line First to Feature All USB 3.0 Models with Hardware Encryption And Industry-Leading Ruggedness, Too
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 24 -- Iomega, an EMC company (NYSE:EMC) and a leading innovator in digital protection solutions for consumers and small and medium businesses, is excited to announce that it is moving to the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface for all Iomega USB 2.0 portable hard drives, beginning with the award-winning line of Iomega® eGo(TM) Portable Hard Drives. The new all-USB 3.0 eGo Portable Hard Drives will feature hardware encryption and super toughness, too, thanks to a drop spec twice the industry average - all at USB 2.0 product prices. This market-leading move continues Iomega's tradition of technology leadership.
"As a market leader in external hard drive solutions, Iomega is proud to be the first to move towards an all USB 3.0 portable hard drive lineup - and at no extra price premium to our customers," said Jonathan Huberman, president of Iomega Corporation and the Consumer and Small Business Products Division of EMC. "With a super fast USB 3.0 interface delivering speeds of up to 10 times that of USB 2.0, super tough with a 7-foot drop spec that's twice the industry average and super secure with AES 256 hardware encryption, Iomega's eGo Portable Hard Drives will be the premium must-have portable storage product. USB 3.0 Transition Timeline for Iomega Portable Hard Drives
Iomega plans to move all eGo Portable Hard Drives in 500GB* and 1TB** capacities to the new USB 3.0 interface by early October. In the first quarter of 2011, Iomega plans to move the Iomega® Prestige Compact Portable Hard Drive line to USB 3.0 on all models. Shortly thereafter, Iomega will move the rest of its portable external hard drive models to the USB 3.0 interface.
Perfect for slipping into a laptop bag or pocket, all of Iomega's 2.5-inch portable hard drives are host powered, requiring no external power supply beyond the power provided through the USB bus on a personal computer, laptop or netbook. Iomega's new USB 3.0 portable hard drives are completely backward compatible with personal computers and other devices that only have USB 2.0 ports. Iomega offers USB 3.0 adapter cards (sold separately) to insert into USB 2.0 laptop and desktop computers so users can experience native USB 3.0 transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second.

Novell Announces General Availability of Novell Cloud Security Service
Novell Cloud Security Service provides provisioning, access, security and compliance solutions for computing in the cloud
WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 24 -- Novell today announced the general availability of Novell Cloud Security Service. Part of Novell's WorkloadIQ(TM) vision, Novell Cloud Security Service® gives cloud providers the ability to deliver secure access and compliance in the cloud for their customers. Novell Cloud Security Service is a critical part of Novell's broader identity and security portfolio, which enables enterprises to have a consistent framework for managing identities across physical, virtual and cloud deployments. Novell is the only vendor to offer this integrated capability, which helps organizations manage complex security and compliance requirements through a cost-effective and easy-to-use suite of products.
With Novell Cloud Security Service, enterprises can quickly and easily extend their identity infrastructure to any public cloud. Any changes that are made to their users or permissions are immediately replicated in the cloud environment, thus ensuring one consistent identity and security framework for the enterprise, regardless of where the computing is actually taking place.
"Security is the biggest hindrance to cloud adoption that service providers offering cloud services need to overcome," said Antonio Piraino, Vice President of Research, Tier 1 Research. "The ability to provide interoperable security solutions for and between an enterprise's internal infrastructure and the cloud provider's platform will alleviate the biggest assurance, vulnerability and SLA concerns enterprises have today."
As cloud computing vendors that offer software-, platform-, or infrastructure-as-a-service seek to differentiate themselves in the marketplace, value-added services like customized security become increasingly important. Novell Cloud Security Service helps cloud service providers deliver trusted security assurance and compliance to their enterprise customers. It is the first, and only multi-tenant identity and access management solution that provides just-in-time provisioning, authentication, authorization and support for compliance.
The Novell Cloud Security Service currently has several beta deployments globally. With today's announcement of general availability, Novell's cloud services team will target more than 200 IaaS, and 1,300 SaaS and PaaS vendors to get them started with this ground-breaking technology that is supported by more than 60 patents.
"Novell's ability to deliver a complete set of provisioning, access, security and compliance solutions that help both organizations and cloud providers control access, monitor activity and provide compliance is yet another example of their leadership in this area," said Jim Reavis, co-founder and executive director of the Cloud Security Alliance. "The Cloud Security Alliance is working closely with Novell to address many of the trust concerns end-user organizations have with cloud computing, including issues that go beyond just technology solutions."
Novell Cloud Security Service is hosted in the cloud, either where the provider hosts its application or via a Novell hosting partner. A user can log on directly or via the enterprise identity system. The service first verifies the identity and, if successful, will generate an identity token in the format needed by the SaaS provider. The user is now authenticated to the SaaS service. Once inside the application, the application connectors that are provided with the service capture deep page-level user activity and provide the audit stream for compliance purposes.
NCSS expands Novell's identity product portfolio in WorkloadIQ
WorkloadIQ is Novell's vision to deliver products for the rapidly growing intelligent workload management market, which IDC estimates is more than $4.2B. A key part of this vision is to deliver a spectrum of cloud-ready Identity and Security solutions to meet today's enterprise need for security in physical, virtual and cloud environments.
As cloud models mature and businesses look at cloud solutions, security questions such as protecting data in the cloud, providing audit reports for inspection and ensuring regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important. For enterprises looking at moving critical workloads to the cloud, the combination of Novell Identity Manager 4® and Novell Access Manager® is the only solution that offers seamless provisioning and access in real-time.
"Despite the speed with which organizations are deploying virtualized systems and moving to SaaS, reporting on access to cloud-based resources is a continuing challenge. Novell Identity Manager provides an intelligent, identity-driven framework to ensure consistent management of identities, both in our organization and in the cloud," said Mark Edson, infrastructure manager, Huntington National Bank. "With Novell Access Manager, we've built a flexible solution to establish a secure, federated connection with our cloud providers so our passwords are never shared with an external party."
For cloud service providers who want to deliver a secure, compliant computing environment for their customers, the Novell Cloud Security Service offers a multi-tenant environment with built-in metering, billing and auditing.
"There is a tremendous market opportunity to help our customers with their cloud strategy, including deploying and managing cloud applications in a secure and compliant manner," said Kevin Nikkhoo, founder and president of CloudsID.com. "Novell Cloud Security Service offers secure access management from the cloud and works with our customers' existing identity infrastructure to enable us to offer our customers best-in-class solutions."
Many Novell customers today are seeking to move applications to the cloud in order to reduce costs and increase agility.
"Today's enterprises are embracing cloud services while continuing their investment in their physical and virtual data centers. To support these efforts, Novell offers the most complete and interoperable set of provisioning, access, security and compliance products for IT organizations and cloud providers. Novell Cloud Security Service complements Novell's comprehensive suite of Identity and Security solutions," said Jim Ebzery, senior vice president and general manager, Security, Management and Operating Platforms, Novell. "Our goal is to give our customers the ability to take advantage of the economic benefits of cloud computing while also mitigating risk and maintaining compliance."
Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL), a leader in intelligent workload management, helps organizations through WorkloadIQ securely deliver and manage computing services across physical, virtual and cloud computing environments. We help customers reduce the cost, complexity, and risk associated with their IT systems through our solutions for identity and security, systems management, collaboration and Linux based operating platforms. Comcast Adds Remote DVR Scheduling, Launches AnyRoom DVR and Upgrades On-Screen Program Guide in Massachusetts and New Hampshire
New Enhancements Make It Easier, Faster and More Convenient For Customers to Schedule, Record, Manage and Watch Favorite Programs
BOSTON, Aug. 24 -- With the fall TV season heating up in just a few weeks, Comcast today announced the launch of new features to its Digital Video Recorder (DVR) service that will bring more choice and convenience to its XFINITY TV customers throughout most of Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
These new innovations, which include AnyRoom DVR and an upgraded on-screen program guide that enables customers to remotely program their DVR while online, coincide with the release of Comcast's second annual "TV Pulse Survey," an independent nationwide survey conducted by International Communications Research, revealing that more consumers than ever before plan to watch their favorite TV shows anytime, anywhere, using time-shifting technologies such as Digital Video Recorders, video-on-demand and the Internet. The survey found that 70 percent of Boston consumers use these time-shifting technologies to watch primetime TV series and discovered that more than half of the consumers that use these technologies rely on them more than they did one year ago.
"We know that Boston area consumers depend on time-shifting technologies to watch their favorite TV shows on their schedules," said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast's Greater Boston Region. "These new enhancements, like AnyRoom DVR, remote DVR scheduling and the enhanced on-screen guide, are just the latest innovations to our XFINITY platform designed to deliver customers expanded access to their favorite entertainment on their terms and the most choice and control available today."
AnyRoom DVR Service
AnyRoom DVR service gives customers the freedom to watch their recorded TV shows from any room in their house, anytime they want. This AnyRoom DVR option, which requires new equipment, enables customers to control all their recordings from one primary DVR that can store approximately 50 hours of high definition programming and 240 hours of standard definition content. With its 500 GB hard drive, the primary DVR outlet gives customers access to all their DVR features, including the ability to schedule and delete recordings, change settings and pause live TV. The AnyRoom DVR service is available with up to three additional HD-capable set-top boxes that can access the primary outlet through the network to enable customers to view and sort recorded programs, as well as fast-forward, rewind and pause their selections from any room in the house. Customers can even begin watching a recorded program in one room and finish watching it in another. Recordings can only be scheduled or deleted from the primary DVR outlet.
With AnyRoom DVR service, both the primary DVR and the networked boxes are HD-capable and function as a regular digital set-top box, including offering access to the interactive program guide, more than 17,000 On Demand movies and programs a month, parental controls and more.
New On-Screen Program Guide Features
Watch in HD Button
-- The new Watch in HD button feature allows customers to quickly switch
to the HD version of the program they are watching and eliminates
searching for the HD version of the channel.
-- The Watch in HD Button cuts scroll times and allows customers to jump
from the SD channel to the corresponding HD channel faster.
On Demand Skip Ahead/Skip Back
-- On Demand Skip Ahead and Skip Back enables customers to skip ahead or
skip back in five minutes increments while watching On Demand
programming by using the Page Up (skip ahead) and Page Down (skip
back) arrows on the remote control.
myDVR Manager
-- myDVR Manager allows customers with a Comcast DVR and high-speed
Internet service to remotely schedule and adjust their recordings
online using Comcast TV Listings. Comcast customers can log on to http://www.comcast.net/tv to add programs to their recording list and manage
their scheduled DVR recordings as well as change the priority of
recorded series. In addition, customers with an iPhone or iPod Touch
can remotely schedule their DVR recordings using the Comcast Mobile
App.
DVR Search & Record
-- DVR Search & Record enables customers to search for a program by
actor, title, director and keyword. For example, if a customer
searches for "Clint Eastwood" all programs Clint Eastwood acted in or
directed that are in the TV Listings would appear. If the customer
saves the Clint Eastwood search, the DVR would automatically search
for new matches and schedule recordings anytime a Clint Eastwood
program aired on any channel.
DVR Skip Ahead/Skip Back
-- DVR Skip Ahead/Skip Back allows customers to skip ahead or skip back
in five minute increments by pressing Page Up and Page Down arrows on
the remote.
DVR History, Cleanup and Folders
-- DVR History displays information on already recorded, watched and
deleted programs.
-- DVR Clean Up allows customers to manage their DVR by deleting in bulk
programs they no longer want to save.
-- DVR Folders - When customers record more than one episode of a series,
DVR Folders will automatically create a folder where programs are
stored.
Comcast's new AnyRoom DVR service and interactive guide enhancements are part of the company's commitment to deliver more choice and control to its customers through its XFINITY services, which include more than 100 HD channels, 3,000 HD choices, 50 to 70 foreign-language channels, On Demand video choices increasing to 25,000 and increased broadband speeds of up of 50 Mbps now and even faster in the future. XFINITY also offers thousands of online entertainment choices through XFINITY TV (http://www.fancast.com) as well as applications that enable customers to program a DVR from the Internet or a mobile device, and cross-platform features like Caller ID to the TV and PC.
For customers who are interested in more information about AnyRoom DVR service or other XFINITY products, please visit http://www.xfinity.com or call 1-800-XFINITY. For more information on the new interactive program guide, customers can visit http://www.comcast.net/newguide.

The new PICSIO pocket cameras, the GC-WP10 and GC-FM2, both feature Full HD video, excellent low-light performance, a three-inch touch screen for easy operation and playback viewing, and compatibility with Eye-Fi cards for Wi-Fi connectivity. And for the ultimate in versatility, the PICSIO GC-WP10 is waterproof.
To produce stunning photos, PICSIO's CMOS image sensor captures stills at up to five-megapixel native resolution without interpolation. It also records up to 1920 x 1080p/30 fps Full HD video with image stabilization for enjoyment on an HDTV via the camera's HDMI output. Perhaps the most prominent feature on the PICSIO cameras is the three-inch touch screen with on-screen graphics for shooting and playback controls, including the 4x digital zoom. What's more, the touch screen functions are easily operated even when wearing gloves for all-season fun. The large screen also enhances playback, with a large, clear image that makes it easy for all to enjoy what was recorded.

Visa Provides Guidance on Secure Implementation and Management of Payment Applications
Collaborative effort with the SANS Institute to help improve merchant security
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 -- Visa Inc. (NYSE:V) today announced global industry best practices for payment application vendors, integrators and resellers that implement, install or manage payment-related systems on behalf of merchants. The best practices developed by Visa in collaboration with the SANS Institute are designed to complement the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS).
The PA-DSS is a global set of security requirements for software vendors who develop payment applications for merchants who seek business software to manage payment processes. PA-DSS compliant applications do not store prohibited data such as track data, sensitive authentication data, or PIN data, helping guard merchants and agents against compromises and support overall compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
"The PA-DSS provides guidance for developing secure software, while Visa's Best Practices for Payment Application Companies represents a natural companion, providing guidance on how to securely install that piece of software," said Eduardo Perez, Head of Global Payment System Security, Visa Inc. "We saw from data compromise investigations that while an application may be secure and comply with the PA-DSS, implementation and management missteps can create vulnerabilities."
In developing the best practices, Visa collaborated with the SANS Institute, a trusted leader in IT security training for the U.S. government, military and private organizations. "Visa's willingness to share this information with the community is a huge step forward," said Alan Paller, Director of Research, the SANS Institute. "Organizations that fail to implement these practices are needlessly exposing themselves to the inherent risks found in cyberspace."
The SANS Institute is also partnering with Visa to provide further guidance to payment application vendors, integrators and resellers on how to securely implement point-of-sale solutions through a series of training courses. More information is available at http://www.sans.org/visatop10.
Today, a growing number of merchants are using applications that comply with the PA-DSS. Criminals are responding by changing their attack methods and are using tools like memory parsers and key loggers to siphon card data while payments are being processed on merchants' or agents' systems. The best practices help meet the challenges of such an evolving security environment.
Investigations of merchant card compromises have found that in many cases, payment application companies inadvertently left their systems and software improperly configured, putting their customers at high risk for data compromise. It was found that many compromised merchants operated with those deficiencies for months or even years at a time.
"Visa is one of the few organizations that actually understands how financial cyber crimes are carried out, because of their extensive investigations and analysis of attacks involving payment card data. The depth of that experience enables them to provide valuable guidance," said Paller.
Visa's Top Ten Best Practices for Payment Application Companies is summarized as follows, with more detailed guidance available at http://www.visa.com/cisp.
1. Perform background checks on new employees and contractors prior to
hire
2. Maintain an internal and external software security training and
certification curriculum
3. Adhere to a common software development life cycle across payment
applications
4. Ensure that newly released payment application versions are Payment
Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) compliant
5. Conduct application vulnerability detection tests and code reviews
against common vulnerabilities and weaknesses prior to sale or
distribution
6. Actively identify payment application versions that store sensitive
authentication data and/or retain critical security vulnerabilities,
and notify all affected customers
7. Maintain customer service level agreements stating that only PA-DSS
compliant payment application versions will be sold and supported
8. Implement an installer, integrator and reseller training and
certification program that enforces adequate data security processes
when supporting customers
9. Adhere to industry guidelines for data field encryption and
tokenization across payment applications that use these technologies
10. Support capability of dynamic data solutions across payment
applications
"Visa's best practices can help mitigate security issues that may lead to data compromises, but it's vitally important to maintain ongoing compliance with the PCI DSS, which remains the best protection against a data compromise," Perez concluded.
The release of Visa's Best Practices for Payment Application Companies represents the latest of series of Visa initiatives to secure payment applications as a means of better protecting card data. Visa developed the original payment application security standards, which were later embraced by the industry as the PA-DSS. In 2007, Visa launched a series of phased-in mandates in the U.S. and in Canada requiring, by no later than 1 July 2010, acquirers to ensure that merchants and agents use only compliant payment applications. With the successful adoption of these mandates, Visa launched similar mandates for its remaining global regions, ensuring full compliance by no later than 1 July 2012. More recently, Visa announced best practices for data field encryption, tokenization and card account data elimination to help reduce merchant vulnerabilities caused by storing sensitive information.
