U.S. Air Force Ready to Launch Third Advanced Extremely High Frequency Satellite Built by Lockheed Martin
CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla., Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Air Force's third Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications satellite, designed and built by a Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] team, is ready to launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Launch is set for Sept. 18 with a two-hour launch window opening at 3:04 a.m. EDT.
The AEHF system provides vastly improved global, survivable, highly secure, protected communications for strategic command and tactical warfighters operating on ground, sea and air platforms. The system also serves international partners including Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Canada was the first of these nations to connect to AEHF during tests with multiple terminals, and Lockheed Martin announced last week that the Netherlands is now using the system.
"Thanks to a focused government-industry team, the third AEHF satellite is ready to launch," said Mark Calassa, vice president of Protected Communication Systems at Lockheed Martin. "We've increased affordability while maintaining a focus on mission success. Our AEHF-1 and -2 satellites are delivering improved capability during on-orbit testing, having already connected three allies and 10 terminal types. From suppliers to engineers to launch operators, we are committed to our customer and this mission."
A single AEHF satellite provides greater total capacity than the entire legacy five-satellite Milstar constellation. Individual user data rates will increase five-fold, permitting transmission of tactical military communications, such as real-time video, battlefield maps and targeting data. In addition to its tactical mission, AEHF provides the critical survivable, protected and endurable communications links to national leaders, including presidential conferencing in all levels of conflict.
Lockheed Martin is under contract to deliver six AEHF satellites and the Mission Control Segment. AEHF-1 and AEHF-2 are on orbit, and AEHF-4 through -6 are progressing on schedule. All satellites are assembled at the company's Sunnyvale, Calif., facility.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 116,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products, and services. The Corporation's net sales for 2012 were $47.2 billion.

OverDog Launches the First Sports App on iOS and Android Devices that Connects Gamers with Pro Athletes
Official OverDog Athletes include Baseball's David Price, Football's Matt Forte, Ray Rice, Chris Kluwe, Soccer's Juan Agudelo, Heath Pearce, Kei Kamara, and many others
First Athlete vs. Athlete Challenge sees Seattle Seahawks' Christine Michael defeating San Francisco 49ers Chris Culliver 21-14 in Madden NFL 25
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- OverDog, a new mobile sports app that connects professional athletes and their fans to play video games together on Xbox and PlayStation announced today its official launch on iOS and Android devices. Ushering in a new era of connectivity in the sports world, the head-to-head video gaming service co-founded byformer Chicago Bears Linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyerfeaturesover 200 Official OverDog Athletes and is free to download and play against the athletes. Athletes levy Challenges online to take on their fans in a variety of games including Madden NFL, FIFA 14, Call of Duty and NBA2K, along with many other multi-player games.
"OverDog provides an experience to both fans and athletes that they can't find anywhere else," said Hillenmeyer "For fans, they get unprecedented access to their favorite athletes. For athletes, it turns a favorite hobby into a way to interact with fans that is more engaging than an autograph line and a lot less invasive at the same time. We're really not sure whether our fans or athletes enjoy it more."
"I was pretty fired up to hear what Hunter and his guys had built. I've played with a bunch of Bears fans, and it's been pretty fun so far," said NFL All-Pro Matt Forte. "I told Hunter to put some stats in the app, because people need to see how serious I am in Call of Duty and Madden."
"I like to compete, I think all athletes do, but so do our fans. It's a really cool thing with OverDog for both sides to be able to game together, but that doesn't mean we don't both want to win," said NFL All-Pro and Super Bowl Champion Ray Rice. "I play Madden, NBA2K, and Call of Duty. When I play Madden, I'm the Ravens and #27 gets the ball A LOT."
OverDog also features Athlete vs. Athlete gaming events, the first of which took place on Sept. 12 in advance of yesterday's battle between NFC West rivals the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. The Madden NFL 25 match-up pitted Seahawks running back Christine Michaelagainst 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver; with Michael and the Seahawks prevailing 21-14. Highlights from the game: http://youtu.be/eMSFgN0BIDg
With its official launch today on iOS and Android devices, OverDog's roster of Pro-Bowlers, Cy Young winners, Olympians and MLS All-Stars can now challenge their fans directly, and within three minutes one lucky OverDog fan will be gaming against professional athletes from the world of football, baseball, soccer, basketball and MMA (see accompanying list of participants). OverDog beta-tested on iOS systems in May with 75 athletes, including OverDog Board Members David Price (Tampa Bay Rays), Chris Kluwe (NFL Punter) and Hank Baskett (Retired NFL WR).
HOW IT WORKS:
-- Athletes and fans download the OverDog App on their iPhone or Android
device
-- Both log-in via Facebook and Twitter, with fans providing info on when
they game to help customize their Athlete Challenge notifications
-- The Athlete then records a quick Challenge video, giving fans three
minutes to accept the Challenge
-- One lucky fan is then chosen and, using gamertag information, OverDog
auto-friends the athlete and fan via their gaming console and
auto-disconnects them post-game. Athletes traditionally play multiple
games against their fans.
FEATURES INCLUDE:
-- Customized Notifications: Fans get notifications only from the teams and
athletes they are interested in playing against
-- Social Share: Bragging rights are key - OverDog allows fans to share via
their social media that they played a Pro-Bowler, a Cy Young Winner, an
Olympian or any of their Pro Athletes, with automated Tweets and
Facebook posts
-- Fan vs. Fan Challenges: Fans can compete against each other to game with
fellow fans or challenge their rivals while they wait for the next
Athlete challenge
OverDog plans on expanding its roster into NBA and NHL by the start of their respective upcoming seasons. Additionally the app will be launching in South America and the EU by the end of 2013, prior to the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
About OverDog
OverDog was co-founded by eight-year NFL veteran Hunter Hillenmeyer, who serves as President, along with fellow co-founder and CEO Steve Berneman, who previously served as legal counsel for high-tech startups in Austin, Texas, and cut his teeth in sports working for a number of professional baseball teams. Hillenmeyer and Berneman were introduced by a mutual friend in Nashville in March 2012 and quickly formed a friendship and business relationship, incorporating OverDog in June 2012. OverDog looks to unite athletes and fans through their shared love of gaming in an efficient, exciting platform. Board Members include the Tampa Bay Rays' David Price, NFL punter Chris Kluwe, former NFL Wide Receiver Hank Baskett, and NHL Superstar Jeremy Roenick, among others.

Sharing Expert Armament Advice
AUTOTESTCON will feature Marvin Test Solutions' CEO Steve Sargeant in its plenary session Automatic Testing for the Next Decade - Keeping Pace with the New Military on September 18. Today's 4(th) generation aircraft have armament systems with new smart weapons, bearing little resemblance to the original systems; yet, maintainers are still required to use the same or similar armament circuits preload test set (ACPTS) used for earlier aircraft - creating a test gap for today's armament systems. As a Major General USAF (Ret.), CEO of Marvin Test Solutions, and Vice President of Strategic Development for The Marvin Group, Steve Sargeant will shed light on changing needs in the market and where test efforts should be focused to overcome the armament test gap and maintain flight readiness for today's smart weapons and advanced aircraft.
In addition, Marvin Test Solutions' executives will present two papers at this year's conference:
-- Incorporating Optical Test Capabilities into a Depot Test Platform
(Sept. 17): Learn how an existing depot test platform that supports a
variety of missile launcher systems (LAU 7, LAU 88, LAU 117, LAU 127,
LAU 128, and LAU 129) was modified to address support for Paveway laser
guided bomb kits.
-- Instrument, Hardware, and Software Simulation in a Test System (Sept.
19): Discover how an application run-time engine that is part of a
commercial application development environment, i.e., ATEasy, can be
enhanced to support a test program simulation mode.
Showcasing the MTS-3060 SmartCan(TM) in Booth 307
This year at AUTOTESTCON, Marvin Test Solutions will feature a range of test solutions that demonstrate the company's continued commitment to delivering systems that provide outstanding value and performance for military and aerospace customers. In booth 307, Marvin Test Solutions has an array of products supporting operational-, intermediate-, and depot-level test including the MTS-3060 SmartCan(TM).
The SmartCan(TM) is an innovative universal O-level test set for 4(th) generation fighter aircraft that are typically tested with insufficient ACPTS created for earlier generation aircraft. As the only flightline test set capable of fully emulating smart weapons such as JDAM, SmartCan(TM) allows technicians to test the MIL-STD 1760 bus interface between the weapons and aircraft. The hand-held, AA battery-operated SmartCan(TM) flightline test set weighs less than three pounds and packs the capability to conduct full pre- and post-load operations while possessing pre- and post-flight audio and video channels for troubleshooting legacy systems such as AIM-9 and AGM-65. Today's SmartCan(TM) solution joins the ranks of other proven Marvin Test Solutions equipment currently deployed or ready to deploy on platforms such as the F-35, F-22, A-10, F-15, F-16, F-18, TA-50, FA-50, F-5, Hawk, and UAS.
Marvin Test Solutions, a vertically integrated test company, has delivered innovative, feature-rich test solutions for factory, flightline, intermediate-level, and depot-level applications since 1988. As a member of the Marvin Group, an award-winning aerospace company with a 50-year history in the Defense and Commercial Aerospace industries, Marvin Test Solutions has test equipment deployed in support of most of the major defense aircraft and munitions in use around the world. Marvin Test Solutions quickly delivers full-spectrum, successful test solutions - making test, maintenance, and sustainment of the most mission-critical systems easier and faster.

e-Nabler's eMobilePOS and iAPS® Improves VIP Dining Experience
Carts of Colorado, e-Nabler's eMobilePOS software and the Daily Systems iAPS® Sled exceed the demands of restaurant mobile tableside service for the Mercedes Benz VIP Club at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater
PASO ROBLES, Calif., Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, one of the largest outdoor amphitheaters in the southeast, has been a popular venue for well-known touring artists and bands.
The exclusive Mercedes-Benz Club is a private bar and restaurant that is available to amphitheater Box Suite holders and VIP guests. The Club is a luxurious area for box ticket-holders and corporate sponsors to relax with its own dedicated staff to assist patrons looking for an upscale and unique theater experience.
The Operating Challenges
One of the most appreciated perks offered in the Club is table-side service, allowing guests to avoid long lines at the concession stands for drinks and meals. Previously, servers would manually hand-write orders on slips of paper and deliver them to the bar or kitchen for preparation.
Problems arose, delays became inevitable, and operating challenges became operating barriers during peak hours. Diners regularly became irritated by slow service and mix-ups. The back-and-forth to the kitchen and bar alone was exhausting and time consuming and would lead to confusion in the kitchen resulting in longer wait times.
The Complete Solution
The operators of the amphitheater found a solution in e-Nabler's e-Mobile POS software, and the iAPS Sled. This mobile POS combination turns any iPhone, or iPod touch into a fully functional complete mobile POS terminal with integrated magnetic stripe reader, smart card reader, bar code scanner, and receipt printer all built into one device.
The iAPS Sled allows wait staff to send orders to the bar and kitchen, managers to oversee operations in real-time, and payments to be processed securely and receipts printed right at a customer's table through the eMobile POS system. A process that previously took 7 steps is now cut down to 3 easy steps. Credit cards never leave the customers' sight while payments are being processed, virtually eliminating the opportunity for fraud and theft.
Narrowing the ordering process down allowed the amphitheater to increase productivity, and increase sales. "We are excited to help Tuscaloosa Amphitheater create a great experience," said Rene Oliver, CEO of Daily Systems. "The iAPS and eMobile POS solution helped decrease order time and labor resulting in happy customers which ultimately increased sales."

"This device breaks down barriers to the home that used to exist, in order for providers to extend their brands and deliver a more engaging experience to their users," said Charlie Nooney, CEO and Chairman of MobiTV. "MobiTV's deep expertise across platforms, and especially with Android, allows us to be creative with our delivery by integrating social recommendations and advertising insertion, among other cutting-edge advances."
Like the tablet and the smartphone, the dongle has strong potential to make waves in the industry. Texas Instruments invents new data converter category
Inductance-to-digital converter revolutionizes position and motion sensing
DALLAS, Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today unveiled the industry's first inductance-to-digital converter (LDC), a new data converter category that uses coils and springs as inductive sensors to deliver higher resolution, increased reliability, and greater flexibility than existing sensing solutions at a lower system cost. Inductive sensing is a contactless sensing technology that can be used to measure the position, motion, or composition of a metal or conductive target, as well as detect the compression, extension or twist of a spring. For more information about this new data converter technology and the industry's first LDC, the LDC1000, visit http://www.ti.com/ldc1000-pr.
Applications for inductive sensing range from simple push buttons, knobs, and on/off switches to high-resolution heart rate monitors, turbine flow meters, and high-speed motor/gear controllers. Given their versatility, LDCs can be used in many different markets, including automotive, white goods, consumer electronics, mobile devices, computing, industrial, and medical.
"LDC technology enables engineers to create sensors using low-cost and readily available PCB traces or metal springs. LDCs provide high-resolution sensing of any metal or conductor - including the human body," said Dave Heacock, senior vice president of TI Silicon Valley Analog. "LDCs provide system designers with a new platform for developing breakthrough solutions to difficult system problems. We can't wait to see what they come up with."
Key benefits of LDC technology:
-- Higher resolution: Enables sub-micron resolution in position-sensing
applications with 16-bit resonance impedance and 24-bit inductance
values.
-- Increased reliability: Offers contactless sensing that is immune to
nonconductive contaminants, such as oil, dirt and dust, which can
shorten equipment life.
-- Greater flexibility: Allows the sensor to be located remotely from the
electronics, where PCBs cannot be placed.
-- Lower system cost: Uses low-cost sensors and targets and does not
require magnets.
-- Limitless possibilities: Supports pressed foil or conductive ink
targets, offering endless opportunities for creative and innovative
system design.
-- Lower system power: Consumes less than 8.5 mW during standard operation
and less than 1.25 mW in standby mode.
Tools and support
The LDC1000EVM, which includes an MSP430F5528 microcontroller (MCU), is available to evaluate the device and can be purchased today for US$29.00.

Dutch social enterprise disrupts mobile phone market through values and transparency
The first smartphone designed and produced by putting social values first showcases
this week during the London Design Festival. Starting September 18th the Dutch social
enterprise, Fairphone, hosts a two-day Pop-Up Space where people can learn about the
considerable challenges faced in the processes behind production, meet the team who has
made it all happen and be the first to hold a Fairphone prototype.
15,000 people have already pre-ordered this new smartphone online without ever holding
one in their own hands, making this crowd-funded movement more than just a phone. These
conscious buyers are part of a movement of consumers who are buying politically and want
to change the way products are made.
Bas van Abel, Fairphone's Founder and CEO: "We've opened up parts of the supply chain,
dug into the details of making a smartphone. Our first edition Fairphone has sparked a
movement of people and organisations that together are working on creating an economy
based on fairer principles. Our values-based approach to production, while not perfect,
wants to disrupt the focus on technology-centred improvement. Doing so means redesigning
the product and the processes behind our global economy by putting people and the
environment first. Although our first phone is enabling some early stage interventions
that we're proud of, these are only the first steps on our journey to systemic change."
For a few days in the heart of Soho, there will be a Fairphone microcosm with our
software partners from Kwamecorp. Pop by and you'll be able to get an insight into why we
embarked on the journey, how the phone is built, what it's made of, and how you can repair
it yourself (easier than you'd think!). Live demonstrations and presentations, urban
mining and design workshops, a hackathon by partners Kwamecorp, the RSA's Great Recovery
Project, Forum of the Future and the Restart Project. Full programme here

RS Components Brings 3D Design Capability to all Engineers with DesignSpark Mechanical
OXFORD, England, September 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Free, fast and intuitive design software opens up new possibilities for
engineers from concept design through to manufacturing
RS Components (RS) and Allied Electronics (Allied), the trading brands of
Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the world's leading high service distributor of
electronics and maintenance products, today announced a significant development in the
history of 3D design software with the launch of DesignSpark Mechanical, a new 3D solid
modelling and assembly tool that is available to all - totally free of charge.
Developed in conjunction with SpaceClaim, the leading provider of flexible and
affordable 3D modelling software for engineers, the new easy-to-use DesignSpark Mechanical
will bring major benefits to design engineers around the world and is available in
multiple languages. It is a significant step in the evolution of the DesignSpark online
resource hub for the engineering community.
The availability of DesignSpark Mechanical overcomes the two major barriers to entry
faced by potential users who do not currently have access to a 3D design solution, but who
could benefit enormously from the use of 3D modelling to quickly develop sophisticated
concepts and products. These impediments are the prohibitive costs and the considerable
investment in learning time associated with traditional 3D CAD tools. Not only is
DesignSpark Mechanical free, its simplicity of use means that engineers and others
involved in product development can become fully conversant with the software within
minutes, rather than the weeks or months required to become skilled with traditional 3D
CAD tools.
"The launch of DesignSpark Mechanical is the first time a 3D design tool with this
level of sophistication has been made freely available. Engineers will love using
modelling software that is so intuitive and flexible," said Glenn Jarrett, Global Head of
Product Marketing at RS Components. "The use of DesignSpark Mechanical early in the design
cycle can eliminate much of the time-consuming rework associated with traditional product
development processes. This is a highly significant initiative that helps engineers to
bring innovative products to market quickly, and DesignSpark Mechanical's STL output
format enables direct export of designs to 3D printers."
With access to more than 38,000 3D models in the extensive DesignSpark online
component library, DesignSpark Mechanical gives all engineers the ability to rapidly
undertake an end-to-end design with professional-grade modelling tools that are at zero
cost. RS and Allied have also collaborated with world-leading 3D content company
TraceParts to provide access to millions of models from the online tracepartsonline.net
CAD portal in DesignSpark Mechanical format.
"Allied and RS are partnering with SpaceClaim to launch DesignSpark Mechanical, which
combines the power and ease-of-use of direct modelling technology from SpaceClaim with
access to the massive library of standard parts from RS and Allied, trusted by millions of
engineers around the world," said Rich Moore, vice president of business development for
SpaceClaim. "Feature-based CAD is more difficult to learn and with DesignSpark Mechanical,
users can rapidly create 3D models to accelerate engineering design and improve their
competitive advantage."
The active base of 3D CAD seats globally is currently estimated at approximately 1.5
million. However, it is also estimated that there are an additional 20 million engineers
globally who do not currently use 3D CAD, but could significantly benefit from a tool such
as DesignSpark Mechanical. It will not only enable design engineers to be more creative,
but will also support a more efficient product development process, allowing the
production of professional concepts right through to delivering highly detailed and
dimensioned manufacturing blueprints.
DesignSpark Mechanical employs a powerful methodology called 'direct modelling', which
is very different from traditional feature- or parametric-based 3D CAD software. The tool
uses simple gestures that enable real-time editing and instant feedback, making it
possible for engineers and others to create geometry and easily explore ideas and product
concepts in 3D. All basic designs can be achieved quickly and easily via the use of the
software's four basic tools - Pull, Move, Fill and Combine - in addition to its employment
of familiar Windows keyboard shortcuts such as cut/paste, undo/redo, which makes it highly
intuitive for new users.
The software can also be used as a complementary 3D tool in the product development
process for the creation of early concept designs, for instance, alongside 3D CAD tools
that are already in use today. The tool can remove bottlenecks in the early design process
by allowing changes and additions in seconds, rather than having to wait for the CAD
department using the traditional 3D tools to rework the design.
3D designs can also be exported in STL, the standard file format to enable rapid
prototyping builds and computer-aided manufacturing, in addition to providing the ability
to quickly obtain Bill-of-Materials (BOM) quotes via the RS and Allied websites. The tool
can also import circuit layout files in IDF format from any PCB design tool, including the
award-winning DesignSpark PCB software.
RS Components and Allied Electronics are the trading brands of Electrocomponents plc,
the world's leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products. With
operations in 32 countries, we offer more than 550,000 products through the internet,
catalogues and at trade counters to over one million customers, shipping around 44,000
parcels a day. Our products, sourced from 2,500 leading suppliers, include electronics,
automation and control, test and measurement, electrical and mechanical components.
Electrocomponents is listed on the London Stock Exchange and in the last financial
year ended 31 March 2013 had revenues of GBP1.24bn.
Utimaco Launches New High-end HSM Series: CryptoServer CSe-Twice the Performance at Top Security
AACHEN, Germany, September 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The German manufacturer of Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) launches its new product
series SafeGuard CryptoServer CSe. The CSe-Series follows from the extremely successful
high-end CS-Series-offering twice the performance and maximum security while keeping total
cost of ownership to a minimum.
Utimaco introduces the latest generation of its FIPS 140-2 security module certified
to Level 4. The new CSe-Series performs high-speed elliptic curve calculations of up to
1,500 operations per second, to name just one key function. This means it offers the
fastest software implementation speed in the HSM market. "We always have an eye on the
total cost of ownership for our customers. This enables us to provide this new Series at
the same cost of the previous model-and even lower operational costs. Sustainability is
extremely important to us," explains Matthias Pankert, Vice President HSM. With the
CSe-Series, cryptographic performance has been doubled while maintaining low energy
consumption. In regards to individual cryptographic operation, effective energy
consumption is even reduced by 30 percent, which is interesting from both a financial and
an ecological point of view.
Like its predecessor, the CSe-Series is one of just a few HSMs in the market that
meets the requirements for FIPS 140-2 Level 4 certification for physical security. This
means, in addition to traditional sectors, it is particularly suitable for highly
sensitive applications within growth sectors such as Smart Metering, eID or eHealth.
In terms of technology, the CSe-Series features a PCI Express Bus for faster
communication, a new processor, two USB ports as well as a storage capacity that is two to
eight times higher-all this in addition to the improved software implementation speed.
Like all Utimaco HSMs, the CSe-Series is available either as a 19-inch network appliance
or as a plug-in card.
"We continued with our philosophy this time around, too, and kept the investment
security for our customers in mind during the development of the CSe-Series," explains
Dieter Bong, Product Manager CryptoServer. "Thanks to our architecture's downward

New remote control designs from Philips Home Control at IBC 2013
-- Philips Home Control is set to unveil the new Surf and Argento off the shelf remote controls for OEMs and MSOs.
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- At this year's IBC event, taking place in Amsterdam from 13-17 September, Philips Home Control is introducing two new remote control designs to their off the shelf portfolio for OEMs and MSOs, as well as a number of new technology solutions. Together they address the dynamic and exciting challenges coming from the emerging market of smart and connected devices with endless content possibilities.
The Surf platform joins Philips Home Control's successful dual keyboard remote control product family. The compact and refreshing industrial design is poised to set a new benchmark in the market. It offers a broad choice of wireless solutions and numerous advanced control features including touch control for intuitive navigation, motion control for gaming and voice input for search, as well as a new head's up text entry experience. That makes it a versatile and effective solution for OEMs and MSOs looking to offer their customers a novel smart TV experience.
Alternatively for the connoisseur who appreciates a remote control as a piece of art, the Argento delivers high-end design with intuitive control. It is a direct result of Philips Home Control's leading industrial design heritage. Every detail of this slim, sleek and simple remote has been carefully thought through and crafted with precision, to achieve its intended look, feel and usability.
Continuing to push innovation
Imagine the possibilities of taking any remote control and simply and cost-effectively turning it into a touchpad. RevoTouch (Revolutionary Touch) from Philips Home Control does exactly that, reusing the same rubber or plastic keys as any normal remote yet it does not need the stiff, flat areas normally required by touch pads.
It delivers full design flexibility for very ergonomic, stylish remote controls that offer both 'normal' key clicks (up / down / left / right / OK) as well as touchpad interactions (flick up / down gestures, cursor control, etc.) using the same cursor pad area.
OEMs and MSOs can also forget about printed manuals, instead they can just give customers the luxury of a graphical wizard running on the TV screen. SimpleSetup already offers a thoroughly user-tested way to program a universal remote. With Philips Home Control's extensive IR code library which can be embedded in the remote or hosted in the cloud, end customers can control their legacy IR equipment in no-time. OnScreen SimpleSetup only needs an HTML browser for painless integration on any modern STB platform. The Philips cloud based service takes care of the rest.
As wireless technology and protocols continue to develop, Philips Home Control's protocol support (proprietary RF, Zigbee RF4CE, Zigbee Pro, Bluetooth 3.0, etc.) is being expanded. The company now offers software stacks and profiles for Bluetooth 4.0 low energy (Bluetooth SMART) and Wi-Fi Direct. With years of wireless RF design-in and mass-production experience, Philips Home Control also offers hardware integration support for optimal co-existence and software support up to the customer user interface level for an optimal user experience.
"We are stepping up our investment in R&D as well as active and open partnerships with leading chipset, hard-, soft- and middleware providers. This will bring further meaningful, easy to adopt and sustainable innovative solutions to our customers," said Jean-Paul Abrams, general manager, Philips Home Control business.

popSLATE Partners with Plastic Logic to Create the Always-on Second Screen Display for their Apple iPhone 5 & 5S Accessory
CAMBRIDGE, England, September 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Plastic Logic has entered into an exclusive strategic partnership with popSLATE for
their new Apple iPhone Always-On 4 second screen display
Plastic Logic and popSLATE are pleased to announce that, following a joint development
programme, the first product will be an accessory for the Apple iPhone 5 and 5S,
incorporating a secondary electrophoretic display (EPD) from Plastic Logic.
One of the product's key features is the display: daylight readable, shatterproof,
ultra-thin and ultra-lightweight. EPD technology is 'always-on' in the sense that an image
is retained and power only required to write a new image. Plastic Logic's market leading
flexible EPD technology combines their unique plastic OTFT backplane with reflective
frontplane technology from E Ink(TM). These benefits mean this technology is ideally
suited to applications such as the high growth market for smart mobile accessories.
popSLATE has pioneered the smartphone Always-On Experience by embedding Plastic
Logic's EPD display into the phone case. In combination with the popSLATE app, users can
customise their case with the images they love, create dashboards with the information
they need, and use their favourite apps in an entirely new, at-a-glance, context-aware
manner. popSLATE is also working with leading artists to create dynamic content channels,
so users can 'pop' a myriad of stunning images to the backs of their phones.
"As the innovators in the space, popSLATE has created a dynamic new product category
and we are incredibly focused on building the best possible product for our users,"
explains popSLATE CEO Yashar Behzadi. "Plastic Logic's solution uniquely meets our
product's demanding design requirements. Working together, our two companies are building
the lightest, most durable, and thinnest ePaper second screen solution in the world."
"We're pleased that, after rigorous testing, popSLATE has endorsed our display
technology as being the one that meets the requirements for their innovative product. Our
flexible EPD technology is proving ideal for smartphone accessory applications, and we are
glad to be working with popSLATE in this market", said Plastic Logic CEO Indro Mukerjee

displays are ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight and very low power, offering huge advantages

Qt Insights Report Reveals Vibrant Community of Application Developers Ready to Extend into Mobile and Internet of Things
LONDON, September 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Report shows Qt application development community is growing, robust and ready to
extend into mobile app development and become a catalyst for explosive growth in Internet
connected devices
A new global study of the Qt developer community by Quadriga Consulting reveals a
strong, broad-spectrum community that is planning to extend its reach into mobile and
machine-to-machine (M2M) applications.
Qt is a software development framework used to create desktop, mobile and embedded
applications. Qt developers surveyed as part of the Qt Insights program create
applications targeting businesses, consumers and in-house business use.
The Qt Insights study included a survey of nearly 2,000 developers in over 90
countries as well as discussion panels and developer interviews. Respondents claimed high
levels of satisfaction with the framework. Moreover the survey data indicates that Qt
adoption is growing with around 10% of users adopting the framework in the last 12 months.
Kevin Franklin, one of the authors, commented, "The Qt developer community spans a
broad spectrum of companies from well-known corporates to small companies and individual
developers. The framework enables them to target the widest range of device types and
operating systems. Developers told us they achieved productivity gains through time
savings in coding and prototyping, and are able create applications with the highest
levels of performance. Availability of good documentation, support, and an active, growing
community means that applications are being produced in abundance. Qt developers target a
broad spectrum of sectors including media & entertainment, defence & aerospace, and
academic research."
Jeffrey Peel, who jointly led the Qt Insights project, said, "Qt developers will
continue to create desktop applications across Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. But this
multi-platform mentality means that Qt developers are increasingly moving beyond the
desktop or embedded systems into mobile."
He continued, "Although Qt is not widely used to develop consumer apps for
smartphones, there are signs that mobile developers are choosing Qt to expand their user
base by targeting mobile devices and platforms. Qt's imminent support for Android and iOS
will accelerate this trend. Use of Qt to develop applications for embedded Linux systems -
for example in the automotive and medical industries - continues to be a strong use-case.
But the explosive growth in Internet-connected devices means Qt could be a key catalyst
for the creation of the Internet of Things."
The 2013 Global Qt Insights Report is available to download free of charge from http://www.qtinsights.com.
Notes for Editors
Qt is used to develop applications for a wide range of operating systems on a variety
of devices including conventional desktop & laptop computers, tablets, smartphones and on
embedded systems. It can be used to develop rich UIs and also to create non-UI
applications such as file handling, database access, thread management and network
support.
Qt is a mature technology first available in 1994 and has been developed and refined
by companies such as Nokia and a large open source developer community. It is available
for use under a commercial license and also to download under an open source license.
The Qt Insights Global report (September 2013) is now available for free download and
is published under a Creative Commons license.
Qt insights conducted a global survey in June 2013 that was fully completed by 1,862

IBC 2013: Eutelsat and Samsung Announce a Partnership to Promote Ultra HD
Consumer electronics leader and pioneer Ultra HD satellite operator combine their skills for Ultra HD promotion
AMSTERDAM, LONDON and PARIS, September 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) and Samsung Electronics today announced
an agreement to combine their industry-leading expertise to partner on the promotion of
Ultra HD. The two companies have launched a dedicated Ultra HD satellite channel that can
be received directly by Samsung's latest Ultra HD TVs with embedded satellite receivers
and incorporating the Samsung Evolution Kit which enables support of current and future
transmission standards.
The Ultra HD channel has been launched on the EUTELSAT 10A satellite that provides
full European coverage, enabling Samsung to reach exhibitions, industry shows,
point-of-sale outlets and other promotional venues for demonstration on its expanding
range of Ultra HD consumer displays. With over eight million pixels, four times the
resolution of today's Full HD displays, Ultra HD enables viewers to sit closer to the
screen and benefit from a much higher immersion. This enhanced viewing experience is
demonstrated using Ultra HD content which has been specially produced by Samsung and
Eutelsat to showcase the benefits of this new technology.
"Ultra HD is the future of television because, not only offers a superior user
experience but also creates exciting new opportunities for the whole TV industry. The
Ultra HD technology is now a commercial viability and we hope that our collaboration with
Eutelsat will become the tipping point for a wider cooperation across the industry for the
acceleration of the standardisation and deployment of Ultra HD TV services," said Vassilis
Seferidis, Director, European Business Development of Samsung Electronics.
Jean-Francois Leprince-Ringuet, Eutelsat's Chief Commercial Officer, added: "Having
launched Europe's first demonstration broadcasts of Ultra HD in January this year, we are
delighted to partner with Samsung on building a reliable and efficient end-to-end 4k
distribution chain. The insight and experience we are gaining of Ultra HD is constantly
strengthening our capability to respond to broadcasters, pay-TV operators and service
providers who are preparing to introduce consumers to a viewing experience that is
literally out of this world."

Westchester County, N.Y., Executive Astorino Credits Friends of Westchester County Parks
VALHALLA, N.Y., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A walk in the park just got a little easier thanks to the first mobile app of its kind for a county park west of the Mississippi. Outdoor enthusiasts can now leave their cumbersome maps in the car and explore the County's 50 parks and 1,800 acres of open space. Friends of Westchester County Parks announced the launch of the Westchester County Parks Pocket Ranger® app, a free on-the-go interactive guide for park goers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The new app will expand the use of technology to provide information to visitors of the Westchester County, N.Y. parks system. Introducing useful technology has been an ongoing initiative of the Friends of Westchester County Parks for improving the parks experience for tourists and residents alike. Now visitors can use the mobile app for a myriad of parks experiences such as hiking, biking, camping, boating, golfing, swimming and more. "To access the free download, a user must search for Westchester Pocket Ranger on their iPhone or Android," said Elizabeth Bracken-Thompson, chairperson of Friends of Westchester County Parks.
The new app was made possible by a grant of $25,000 from Friends of Westchester County Parks, a not-for-profit group dedicated solely to promoting and supporting the award-winning Westchester County Parks System, and a partnering grant from Fujifilm whose USA Corporation headquarters are located in Westchester. "Our organization was proud to make this free mobile app available to help outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the beauty of our 1,800 acres of parkland. It speaks to a whole new generation of recreational enthusiasts who are used to turning to their mobile devices," she continued.
Commenting on Fujifilm's gift, President of Fujifilm Holdings America Corporation Shig Sano said, "Fujifilm has long been a supporter of Westchester County Parks as part of our global commitment to sustainability, and we are constantly seeking ways to be more innovative in our business." He continued, "This mobile application project is the perfect blend of innovation and environmental awareness that helps improve the surrounding community in which we work and live."
"I thank Friends of Westchester County Parks and Fujifilm for bringing this extremely helpful new technological tool to our park visitors and also to people from outside the region who would like to explore our award-winning park system," Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino said. "And, thanks to the support of these two sponsoring partners, the app is free to users and there is no cost to county taxpayers."
In addition to state-of-the-art GPS technology, the Pocket Ranger provides numerous other tools to make exploring Westchester's beautiful parks a breeze. Visitors can decide which park to visit using the 3-in-1 Explore search feature, allowing users to search all parks or narrow it down by activity or destination type. The Calendar of Events is updated in real time and informs app users of all the upcoming events for each park. Park rules and regulations are a click away, an especially helpful feature to anglers and sportsmen. Planning an extended visit is easy with a few quick clicks to secure overnight reservations.
From the home page users can:
1. Choose by park name or location/town/ city/village
2. Choose by activity or interest (kayaking, archery, hiking, biking)
