Unitrends Lowers the Cost and Overhead of Backup Deduplication with New 'Adaptive Deduplication' Approach

New Unitrends Backup Deduplication Technique Overcomes the Limitations of Traditional Deduplication Solutions

COLUMBIA, S.C., April 27 -- Unitrends, the leader in affordable, heterogeneous, vertically integrated, disk-based all-in-one data protection appliances, today announced Adaptive Deduplication. Unitrends' Adaptive Deduplication is a content-aware data reduction mechanism that adapts dynamically to reduce the storage footprint of the content it is protecting while overcoming the overhead and high costs associated with other deduplication processes.

"What often gets lost in the hype of backup deduplication is that the purpose of deduplication is to provide more storage for less money," said George Crump, lead analyst, Storage Switzerland. "Yet, many approaches for deduplication result in increased integration, monitoring, and management responsibilities for backup administrators."

"With Adaptive Deduplication, we are delivering the advantages of deduplication without the capital expense of dedicated hardware-based deduplication devices," said Dr. Mark Campbell, chief operating officer, Unitrends. "The result is a cost-effective deduplication solution that offers better performance and manageability than software-based solutions."

Adaptive Deduplication is a data reduction scheme that is integrated directly with the Unitrends backup appliance. The solution adapts dynamically based on a range of factors including:

--  The content of the data being protected
--  The data reduction possible using compression
--  The data reduction possible using deduplication
--  The amount of secondary (disk) storage that may be used by Adaptive
      Deduplication
--  The amount of primary (RAM) storage that may be used by Adaptive
      Deduplication
--  The number of processor cores that may be used by Adaptive
      Deduplication

Adaptive Deduplication is a feature of Unitrends upcoming release 5, available in May, and will be offered on all current generation Unitrends appliances.
