QNX Unveils Latest Generation of Operating System and Tool Suite

OTTAWA, April 27 -- QNX Software Systems today unveiled the latest generation of its operating system and development tools for the automotive, industrial, medical, networking, and defense markets. Version 6.5 of the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) and the QNX Momentics® Tool Suite introduces many new capabilities, including support for ARM Cortex-A9 processors and Freescale Power e500MC processor cores, a Persistent Publish/Subscribe service, a variety of performance optimizations, and an enhanced toolchain that includes Eclipse CDT 6.0, GCC 4.4.2, and GDB 7.0.

With version 6.5, the QNX Neutrino RTOS now supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) on ARM Cortex-A9 processors and Freescale Power e500MC processor cores. Moreover, QNX Neutrino can now support SMP on multi-core processors with up to 32 cores, providing massive scalability for compute-intensive applications in networking, image processing, and other environments.

Release 6.5 of the QNX Neutrino RTOS also delivers faster kernel performance under heavy memory utilization and significantly higher file system throughput on many platforms. Other RTOS enhancements include support for Intel advanced programmable interrupt controllers (APICs), Intel message signaled interrupts (MSIs), and expanded support for x86 boards from Advantech, Intel, and Kontron.

Version 6.5 supports a new Persistent Publish/Subscribe (PPS) service, which can greatly simplify the design and maintenance of systems that integrate many disparate hardware devices and software components. In a home energy management system, for example, the PPS service can allow sensors, thermostats, alarms, and other components to be replaced or upgraded without requiring changes to the system's human machine interface (HMI).

The QNX Momentics Tool Suite offers a comprehensive Eclipse-based IDE with innovative profiling tools that help developers gain maximum insight into system behavior. Version 6.5 of the suite introduces support for the Eclipse platform 3.5.2, Eclipse CDT 6.0, GNU debugger (GDB) 7.0, binutils 2.20, and GNU compiler (GCC) 4.4.2. Compiler enhancements include optimized dynamic linking, including lazy linking and GNU hashing. The tool suite also includes performance enhancements to its system profiler, a visualization tool that allows developers to analyze complex software behavior on both single- and multi-core systems.

Availability

The QNX Neutrino RTOS 6.5 and the QNX Momentics Tool Suite 6.5 are slated for commercial availability in June 2010. Developers can now download experimental versions of these products from Foundry27, the QNX community portal.

Demos at ESC Silicon Valley

This week at ESC Silicon Valley (booth #1738), QNX Software Systems will demonstrate:

--  The LTE Connected Car, which is based on the QNX CAR application
      platform.
--  An interactive demo of QNX Software Systems' smart energy reference, a
pre-integrated software stack that makes it easier to design, deploy,
and extend home energy management systems.
--  A hypervisor/realtime control demo that runs the QNX Neutrino RTOS and
Microsoft Windows on a single multi-core chip.
