Greenplum Debuts Greenplum Chorus, The First Commercial Enterprise Data Cloud Platform

Ushers in New Era of Enterprise Social Collaboration For Data, Analytics and Insights; Announces Latest Edition of Greenplum Database 4.0

LAS VEGAS, April 12 -- GREENPLUM DAYS -- Greenplum Software, the world's leading data infrastructure company, today introduced Greenplum Chorus(TM), the industry's first commercially available Enterprise Data Cloud(TM) platform.  Greenplum Chorus's innovative self-service provisioning, data collaboration and data services features offer global organizations the opportunity to complement their traditional enterprise data warehouse (EDW) with a new class of software that empowers people within an enterprise to more easily collaborate and derive insight from their data.

Greenplum today also announced Greenplum Database 4.0, a major release of the company's high-performance database software. Greenplum Database 4.0 is the culmination of more than seven years of development and addresses the most rigorous data warehousing needs of the world's largest organizations. This release introduces the next generation of advanced workload management and self-healing fault tolerance capabilities, allowing it to comfortably power data warehouses and marts of any scale and complexity. Greenplum Database 4.0 also powers the databases provisioned by Greenplum Chorus.

"Today's announcements represent a true breakthrough in the way enterprises can manage and benefit from all of their data, and mark significant milestones in the evolution of our company," said Scott Yara, president and co-founder, Greenplum.  "We've invested considerable resources and undertaken a tremendous effort to make our vision a reality, and today we have delivered on our promise with the revolutionary Greenplum Chorus Enterprise Data Cloud platform, and Greenplum Database 4.0, the world's most powerful analytic database."

The Greenplum Chorus EDC platform, and Greenplum Database 4.0 will be on display at the invitation-only Greenplum Days event taking place alongside the Gartner Business Intelligence Summit at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, April 12-13.

Greenplum Chorus

Greenplum Chorus is a new class of software that empowers people within an enterprise to more easily collaborate and derive insight from their data. As the first commercial Enterprise Data Cloud platform, it provides the key services necessary for organizations wrestling with all data, big and small, structured and unstructured, to realize the benefits of private cloud computing techniques and social collaboration for enterprise data warehousing and analytics.

Chorus serves the needs of data analysts, IT and business executives with three core pillars of functionality.

--  Self-service provisioning of data marts and secure, controlled
sandboxes relieves IT of the management overhead and operational
complexity usually associated with data mart deployment.
--  Data services, allowing analysts to effortlessly discover, combine and
share useful datasets within and across data marts.
--  Data collaboration, providing rich social networking capabilities that
link data and data analysts to accelerate collaboration and insight.

"Greenplum is at the forefront of a market shift," said Tim O'Reilly, founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media and a Greenplum advisor. "It's a shift that is moving beyond hardware, software, and even the Internet. It's a shift about data. Big Data. Small Data. All Data.  What Greenplum is delivering today will create new opportunities for enterprises to harness their data to improve how they operate, respond to customers, and create new products and services."

Greenplum Chorus is built for global scale, and is powered by the Greenplum Data Hypervisor(TM), a distributed cloud-scale execution framework that manages complex cross-database state, data movement and orchestration in a fault-tolerant and self-healing manner.

"Greenplum's EDC technology is driving a new era of safe, trusted sharing," said Scott McNealy, industry visionary and executive advisor to Greenplum.  "Greenplum is breaking down the walls of the data warehouse with a wonderful, next-generation architecture that I think is very, very exciting and which could see very wide adoption in a very quick way."

Greenplum Database 4.0

Greenplum Database 4.0, a major release of Greenplum's industry leading massively-parallel (MPP) database product, is the culmination of more than seven years of development. Already regarded as the most scalable mission-critical analytical database and in use at more than 100 leading enterprises worldwide, the new release raises the bar with numerous powerful features and enhancements.

--  Dynamic Query Prioritization: Extends Greenplum's Advanced Workload
Management with patent pending technology providing continuous
real-time balancing of the resources of the entire cluster across all
running queries. Gives DBAs the controls they need to meet workload
SLAs in complex mixed workload environments.
--  Self-Healing Fault Tolerance: Traditional MPP database fault-tolerance
techniques were suitable for <100 servers, but TCO increased
dramatically beyond that scale. Greenplum's new fault-tolerance
capabilities provide intelligent fault-detection and fast online
differential recovery, lowering TCO and allowing cloud-scale systems
with the highest levels of availability.
  --  Polymorphic Data Storage(TM) - MultiStorage/SSD Support: Greenplum
Database 3.3 introduced Polymorphic Data Storage(TM), including
tunable compression and support for both row- and column-oriented
storage within a database. With Greenplum Database 4.0, this is
extended to allow the placement of data on specific storage types such
as SSD media or NAS archival stores.
--  Analytics & Language Enhancements: Support for PL/Java, and optimized
C and Java function support for Greenplum MapReduce.
--  Performance Enhancements: A range of enhancements, including faster
single-row operations (select, update, insert & delete), and index
access methods for columnar and AO table types.
--  Health Monitoring & Alerting: Provides email and SNMP notification in
the case of any event needing IT attention

Other enhancements in Greenplum Database 4.0 include a fast parallel data-out capability, and a wide range of minor enhancements and optimizations.
