Since the debut of the first season in 2005, The Boondocks - based on the comic strip by the same name - has been one of Adult Swim's most popular original series.  In 2007, the envelope-pushing show was recognized with the prestigious Peabody Award for the episode McGruder wrote titled, "Return of the King," in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. awakens from a coma and reacts to contemporary phenomena from gangsta rap to the war on terror.  In 2005 the series was nominated for a NAACP Image Award in the category of "Outstanding Comedy Series."

The animated series is voiced by Regina King (Southland, Ray) as brothers Huey and Riley Freeman, John Witherspoon (Friday After Next) as Robert Jebediah Freeman aka "Granddad," Cedric Yarbrough (Reno 911), Gary Anthony Williams (Boston Legal), Gabby Soleil (Johnson Family Vacation) and Jill Talley (American Dad). In season three, guest characters are voiced by an eclectic mix of actors and media personalities, including Bill Maher, Werner Herzog, Ed Asner, Billy Dee Williams, Star Jones and Marion Ross. The Boondocks is produced by Rebel Base in association with Sony Pictures Television.
