QNAP Launches Enterprise ZFS NAS ES1640dc, Featuring Intel Xeon E5 Dual Active Controllers for Near-zero Downtime Reliable Services

TAIPEI, Taiwan, August 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

QNAP Systems, Inc. launched the new Enterprise ZFS NAS ES1640dc, a whole-new product
line for mission-critical tasks and intensive virtualization applications. Representing a
milestone for QNAP's step into the enterprise storage market, the ES1640dc delivers
business-class cloud computing data storage with Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5 processors, dual
active controllers, and full support for virtualization environments. The ES1640dc runs
the new FreeBSD-based QES operating system that assists businesses in building the most
cost-efficient VDI platform and storage for critical data with near-limitless snapshots,
block-level data deduplication, and thin provisioning with reclaim.

    The ES1640dc is powered by Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5-2420 v2 processors with 32GB RAM and
features dual active-active controllers, providing businesses with near-zero downtime high
availability. Other features include battery-protected DRAM write cache, dual 10GbE ports,
optional 40GbE NIC, redundant power supplies, and a field-replaceable design for easier
maintenance. The new FreeBSD-based QES operating system also provides advanced features
including flexible storage pools, simplified management, high-performance SSD cache,
near-limitless snapshots, SnapSync, block-based data deduplication, in-line compression
and thin provisioning with reclaim for optimized utilization in virtual machine storage.

"The ES1640dc adopts dual active-active controllers to provide the utmost reliability
and high availability," said Waterball Liu, Product Manager of QNAP, adding "The new QES
operating system provides superior system functionality, but also provides a similar user
experience as our well-reputed QTS operating system to make it easier for existing QNAP
NAS users to learn the system."

As QNAP's first OpenStack Ready NAS, the ES1640dc is suitable for virtualization,
virtual desktop environments, and is the best choice for cloud applications. QES supports
iSCSI Cinder Node drivers and provides block-level storage space to virtual machines. It
accelerates the deployment of virtual machines, enhances virtual machine image access
efficiency through iSCSI, and is easier to integrate into commercial cloud storage
platforms. "VDI applications usually contain lots of duplicate data, and block-based data
deduplication and data compression can help reduce storage usage, achieving optimal
virtual desktop performance as deduplicated virtual desktops become easier to cache,"
added Liu.

The ES1640dc is also certified for VMware(R) vSphere(TM) 6.0, and is compatible with
Microsoft(R) Hyper-V(R), benefiting flexible deployment and management in virtualization
environments. The ES1640dc supports VMware VAAI and Microsoft ODX to increase performance
by offloading server loading for ESXi server and Hyper-V respectively. The QNAP vSphere
Client plug-in, web plug-in and QNAP SMI-S provider are also supported to enhance
operational and management in virtualization applications.

EJ1600 expansion enclosures are also available for the ES1640dc. They connect via the
dual path mini-SAS design to sustain continuous operations even if an external cable is
disconnected.
