Huawei Announces New Breakthrough in All-Optical Cross-Connect Field

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has today announced that it is releasing ultra-large port non-blocking wavelength adding/dropping technology (also known as ADWSS) and corresponding optical node architecture.

The announcement was made at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC) 2016, the largest such global conference and exposition. Huawei also showcased an 8-degree ADWSS prototype that supports wavelength adding and dropping on 128 ports, implementing the free optical cross-connection of 640 wavelengths on these ports. This is a new technical breakthrough in the all-optical cross-connect field and achieves dramatic progress in developing all-optical cross-connections on transport networks.

With the rapid increase in data traffic and the development of software-defined networking (SDN) technology, flexible grooming of optical-layer node services is now crucial. At the moment, many independent optical modules are required to construct colorless, directionless, and contentionless optical nodes. For example, at least 8 multicast switch (MCS) modules, 64 optical amplifier (OA) modules, and 128 fiber connections are required for an 8-degree node, which are expensive, have low integrity, and poor flexibility and maintainability.

The Huawei 8-degree ADWSS prototype adopts a leading optical switching engine and innovative two-dimensional optical processing technology. One module implements the functions of eight independent sub-systems and supports non-blocking adding and dropping of 640 wavelengths on 128 ports, requiring no OA or internal fiber connection and featuring high flexibility. In addition, the supported port number can be easily increased to 256, 512, or even higher. The brand-new optical nodes, constructed based on the ADWSS prototype, have high integrity and flexibility, greatly reducing cost and improving maintainability.

This technology is important for the evolution of transport networks to all-optical networks. Huawei continues to strive to make technical breakthroughs in the all-optical cross-connect field. It has also released the wavelength-based multidimensional all-optical cross-connect technology, Petabit Photonic Cross-Connect (PPXC) prototype, and all-optical cross-connect network architecture that can be applied to all topologies to support the application of optical cross-connect technology, assisting customers to efficiently handle challenges presented by the future growth in digital information.
