Avoid Bedbugs at your Thanksgiving Dinner Table

Heated Luggage Protects Travelers from Bedbug Infestations

CHICAGO, Nov. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- When an estimated 46.9 million Americans are expected to travel this Thanksgiving holiday season, they'll be looking forward to a four-day weekend, feasting, football games, and fellowship. But a rise in bed bug infestations could mean travelers may bring along some unwanted guests to the holiday dinner table.

No longer just a risk in the bedroom, bedbugs are also found in hospitals, nursing homes, movie theaters, retail stores, universities and public schools, and even on airplanes. Eight of the top 10 busiest airports for Thanksgiving weekend from Nov. 25 to Nov. 30 as reported by Orbitz are located in the top 30 cities for bedbugs (as reported by Orkin).

"With the large number of people expected to travel this year for Thanksgiving, there is a higher risk for bringing along bedbugs as they hitchhike from one person to another," said Brian Hirsch, director of sales for ThermalStrike, a line of products that features state-of-the-art infrared technology that is lethal to all stages of bed bugs. "With a few simple precautionary steps, an infestation can be avoided and families can eliminate stress about a potential encounter with the pests."

According to Hirsch, while there's a heightened concern about bedbugs, there's also a lot of confusion about how you get them and what to do. "Getting rid of bedbugs is no easy task," Hirsch says. In fact, the National Pest Management Association recommends exposure to temperatures above 118°F for bedbug management. ThermalStrike Luggage is designed to exceed these temperatures to kill all stages of bedbugs and eggs, while regulating temperatures that are safe for most items.

"By raising the luggage's handle and simply plugging the unit into a traditional wall socket, it treats all of your belongings," Hirsch says. "It is peace of mind for travelers once they get to their destination, and when they return home."

Available in two sizes, a 20  carry-on and 24  upright, ThermalStrike luggage is TSA and FAA compliant and features an ultra-thin heating system with an integrated thermometer that automatically shuts off after reaching the desired temperature to kill all life stages of bedbugs.

Hirsch offers additional tips for travelers to consider this holiday travel season:

    1. Be prepared: Protect yourself while traveling. Check the hotel room and
       use bedbug-proof luggage like ThermalStrike.
    2. Be on the lookout. Bedbug signs include: itchy, red welts on skin, black
fecal material in mattress folds and black/red spots on sheets.
    3. Be Aware: Bedbugs hide in common spots like trains, buses, movie
theaters, the gym and other public places.
    4. Use helpful apps like Bed Bug 101 mobile app to stay aware on the go.
