Halokit Announces a New High Tech Electroplating Process That Gives Steel Apple Watch an 18-karat Gold Body

Halokit's new, advanced electroplating technology makes 18-karat gold Apple Watches affordable with true color-matched authenticity

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Halokit has developed a new technology that permanently bonds real 18-karat gold onto any Apple Watch. The advanced electroplating process uses a low powered current to bond gold to all the standard stainless steel components of the Apple Watch.

Halokit is targeting a huge gap in the Apple Watch market. The special edition watch that features an 18-karat gold body, is currently being sold for more than $10,000, making it one of the most expensive wearable devices on the planet.

That hefty price tag puts the gold Apple Watch out of range for the average consumer. However, with its affordable technology, Halokit is making the gold watch a reality at a fraction of the retail price.

Electroplating involves passing an electric current through a solution called an electrolyte. This is achieved by dipping two electrode terminals into the electrolyte and connecting them into a circuit with a stable power supply. When the electricity flows through the circuit they make the electrolyte split up and the gold metal atoms are deposited in a layer on top of one of the electrodes - the steel Apple Watch -- creating a permanent gold bond.

According to Halokit's CTO, Brian Yang, their proprietary 18-k gold electroplating method uses the latest technology to coat each watch with exactly color-matched 18-karat gold that is extremely resistant to fading. The gold plating is thicker than that offered through any other process - and comes with a full two-year warranty guaranteeing customer satisfaction.

"There are other gold plating services and kits on the market, but they have been known to damage the Apple Watch," says Yang. "That's because most services use an extremely imprecise process called 'pen plating' that will leave your watch blotchy with an uneven coating. Our method completely immerses the watch in a safe solution for a thick, uniform coating that makes the gold layer resistant to fading and scratching. In addition, most services are using a 24-karat gold solution that does not color-match the authentic Apple Watch. Halokit uses 18-karat gold, just like the real thing, giving you the most precise and authentic looking gold hue you can find anywhere."

Yang stresses that Halokit's gold plating technology avoids the use of cobalt as an additive because it commonly gives an orange brown appearance to plated gold.

Using insured and tracked shipping, watches are sent to the Halokit facility in Vancouver, BC. The gold transformation electroplating process is completed and shipped back to anywhere in North America within three to four business days. The service costs $299. The tracked shipping is free of charge.

Halokit emphasizes that its gold-plating alternative is not only cost-effective, but also not harmful to the environment.

"Most consumers don't know where gold comes from or how it is mined," notes Yang. "Gold mining can be a destructive industry that displaces communities, contaminates drinking water, hurts workers and destroys pristine environments. Halokit takes pride in using ethically sourced gold, which has minimal effect on our environment."

Halokit offers a choice of traditional 18-karat yellow gold or rose gold, which can be viewed on their website. All of their gold is 98% pure and will match the Apple Watch Edition. Two-year warranty protection is included.

For those desiring extra bling, the company can also add an optional Swarovski crystal to the crown, in a choice of colors. Diamonds are another option.
