Broadcom Powers the Gigabit Era of DSL

New Chipset for DSL Infrastructure Delivers Faster Broadband over Installed Copper Cabling

AMSTERDAM, Oct. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadband World Forum 2014

News Highlights:

--  Industry's highest density solution for G.fast, with bandwidth up to
        1Gbps per twisted pair
--  World's highest integration VDSL with 2x density(1) and up to 36 ports
        of fully-vectored VDSL(2 )
    --  Provides the industry's most integrated G.fast and G.Vector
        infrastructure solution
Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced a new chipset that will enable operators and service providers to deliver Gigabit performance over currently installed twisted pair copper cabling. Built on Broadcom's field-proven central-office DSL technology, the BCM65200 DSP and BCM65900 analog front end family of chipsets are the industry's highest density G.fast solution, providing a critical step in paving the path to Gigabit-speed services over copper to the home. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.

Today's introduction unlocks the Gigabit-speed potential of operator and service provider's installed copper plant, providing fixed line operators with a path to highly-competitive broadband services over the next several years. Complementing the BCM65200/900 family, Broadcom's end-to-end portfolio for residential home gateways includes the BCM63138 with full support for G.fast and G.vector deployments.  Broadcom will showcase its full line of G.vector and G.fast technology October 21-23, 2014 at Broadband World Forum in Amsterdam, booth #MR7.

"As an industry leader in G.vector and G.fast technologies, Broadcom is supporting the in-progress deployments and trials of operators evaluating cost-effective ways to boost the performance of their broadband services across existing access networks," said Greg Fischer, Broadcom Senior Vice President and General Manager, Broadband Carrier Access. "Worldwide support for G.fast is growing as it enables operators to provide FTTH-like speeds without the cost associated with fiber deployments."

The BCM65200 DSP and BCM65900 analog front-end VDSL chipset with on-chip vectoring and integrated G.fast support a new state-of-the-art DSP architecture to deliver unmatched levels of integration.  Incorporating up to 36 lines of VDSL2 or six lines of G.fast, plus high-speed vector interfaces that eliminate the need for external PHY and framing devices, the BCM65200/900 family delivers the most power-efficient system solution for high-density G.vector DSLAMs as well as new G.fast-based fiber-to-the-distribution point (FTTdp) architectures. With full backward-compatibility to existing VDSL and ADSL technologies, including simultaneous G.Fast and G.vector crosstalk cancellation, the BCM65200/900 family is the only commercially available chipset solution to provide operators a means to selectively deploy G.fast to new customers in the same system as VDSL2, preventing the forklift upgrade required for alternative solutions.

"Building on our success with Broadcom in launching VDSL solutions, Swisscom continues to pioneer the application of G.fast technology to wireline broadband," said Oliver Lamparter, Swisscom Innovation Product Manager. "We will continue to work together to address challenges and unlock the dramatic potential of evolving copper access technologies. As we consider high-density deployments, Swisscom will look to leverage Broadcom's new end-to-end G.fast solution in our near-term G.fast offerings."

"As one of the first vendors to begin G.fast and vectoring deployments, Broadcom has already made traction in the burgeoning vectoring and G.fast markets," said Jeff Heynen, Infonetics Principal Analyst, Broadband Access and Pay TV. "As operators in Europe and beyond expand both vectoring and G.fast, Infonetics expects that 63 percent of the of the cumulative 179 million VDSL ports shipped globally from 2014 to 2018 will be vectoring-capable."

BCM65200/900 Family Key Features

--  Advanced 28 nanometer (nm) process technology
    --  36 ports of VDSL2 17a
--  Leverages leading process technology and density to reduce VDSL2 power
consumption per port up to 30 percent
--  Multimode and auto-moding support, selectable per channel, simultaneous
support of G.fast, G.vector, VDSL2 and ADSL protocols on a per line
        basis
--  Support for chip-, board- and system- level vectoring modes
--  Integrates all 10G-KR vectoring interfaces; lowering bill-of-materials,
size and power consumption and providing direct interface to the line
        cards
