SGI and Extreme Networks Partner to Bring High Performance Big Data and Hadoop Solutions

SGI Chooses Extreme Networks' High Performance Ethernet Solution for Hadoop Support; Big Data for Critical Business Decisions Can Now be Analyzed in Days Instead of Weeks

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR), a leading provider of high performance network solutions, today announced an agreement with SGI (Nasdaq: SGI), the trusted leader in high performance computing (HPC) and Big Data, to be their select networking partner in order to provide comprehensive Hadoop solutions globally. SGI will include Extreme Networks' Summit® X670 fixed Ethernet switches, with 10/40GbE capabilities, as part of its SGI Clusters for Hadoop. The integrated solution is designed to help customers harness valuable information and rapidly improves the speed at which data can be analyzed.

Big Data delivers knowledge capital and bottom line benefits to enterprises, re-shaping the way customer information is analyzed and consumed. With the recent launch of data centric network and compute solutions such as Hadoop 2.0, the Big Data industry is expected to reach $24 billion by 2016, according to research firm IDC.(1)

"As businesses continue to tackle Big Data, they face the challenge of how to unlock value at greater speed, scale and efficiency," said Bill Mannel, general manager of Compute for SGI. "We're applying the expertise we learned in designing and building the world's fastest high-performance supercomputers to our Big Data Analytics solutions, allowing customers to increase ROI on their Big Data investments as they scale."

"Customers today want to make faster decisions from all available data," said Steve Conway, IDC Research Vice President, High Performance Computing/Data Analysis. "The combined SGI and Extreme Networks solution is designed to alleviate bottlenecks in traditional networks and facilitate better and faster decisions for business users."

Through the partnership, SGI's customers, ranging from research and education to government and financial industries, will be empowered to handle and maintain the massive amounts of data they process. Hadoop will enable customers to generate reports that incorporate billions of stored data within one night, versus the weeks that conventional databases take. It will also simplify the management of these files, images, sound and video, opening the possibility for quick data retrieval when the information is most needed.

"Partnering with SGI, the global leader in high performance computing, provides our customers with the performance required to turn Big Data into actionable insights," said Eileen Brooker, vice president of strategic alliances for Extreme Networks. "The integrated SGI/Extreme solutions offer customers the low latency performance required for Big Data and Hadoop environments."

Extreme Networks Summit X670 series provides exceptional high-performance switching and cross-platform stacking for building next generation enterprise data centers and cloud networks. The purpose-built top-of-rack Summit X670 is designed to support emerging 10GbE-enabled servers and helps optimize new server deployments with its optional, future-proofing 40GbE uplink for 10GbE-based high-performance servers to start the transition to the new virtualized environment.
