Northrop Grumman Delivers Open-Architecture Software Development Kit to Interested Parties Following AMDR Industry Day

LINTHICUM, Md., June 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has announced the delivery of its Scalable Node Architecture (SNA) Software Development Kit (SDK) to second- and third-party defense product and services firms to foster broader use of open architecture throughout the company's defense program teaming efforts.

Earlier this year, Northrop Grumman's Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) Industry Day brought together a wide range of technology businesses interested in providing hardware and software components for Northrop Grumman's AMDR offering. While the focal point was the AMDR program, the event also served to encourage dialogue among attendees about how to participate in an open-architecture environment on other Department of Defense programs at Northrop Grumman.

As a result, the company will provide the SDK - a comprehensive suite of tools, documentation and programming environment used to streamline the development of software capabilities - to all qualified companies in preparation for bidding on AMDR and other programs using Northrop Grumman's SNA. The kit's components will provide an in-depth understanding of the interfaces and capabilities that enable development of components readily compatible with the AMDR software architecture.

"Our commitment to openness is foundational and comprehensive," said Pat Antkowiak, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Advanced Concepts and Technologies Division. "Advancing resources to highly capable firms strengthens this foundation and increases collaboration opportunities beyond Northrop Grumman."

The SDK includes a robust, open-architecture middleware framework known as the SNA which runs the component-based software capabilities developed with the SDK. Both the SDK and SNA have been assembled using advanced commercial and open source software products and tools integrated with the Linux operating system.

Historically, resources such as the SDK were only provided to those with whom the company had established formal partnerships. As part of this new initiative, the company has begun the follow-on process with firms interested in current and future open architecture opportunities enterprisewide. A few firms to date have received a copy of the SNA SDK documentation in preparation for bidding on software work packages, not exclusive to AMDR.

Northrop Grumman continues to evaluate suppliers that have shown interest and great potential to AMDR and the entire enterprise. The list of supplier attendees at the Industry Day has been categorized according to expertise and best fit with AMDR and other relevant programs. These firms have been contacted to engage in additional dialogue with Northrop Grumman.
