U.S. Department of Energy Adopts BuildingEnergy.com for Building Data and Decision Support System

Building Energy's application is enabling a leap forward in building energy efficiency, built on its trusted and open network of building data

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Building Energy Inc. announced today that it is licensing its cloud-based application to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to make its national database of building energy and asset data accessible, open, and secure.  The DOE's goal is to enable managers, engineers, and financiers of energy efficiency projects to make confident and informed decisions about building energy efficiency.

Building Energy seeks to address the energy data problem that exists today: there is no reliable network of data from which to derive deep insights, and what is available is rarely accessible.  Building Energy is changing this dynamic with its application.  "All vendors will have access to the valuable data the DOE is collecting because it is protected by Building Energy's anonymization technology to ensure the privacy of sensitive information," said D. Magnus Cheifetz, Building Energy CEO.

In addition to providing secure and selectively shared storage of building energy and asset data, Building Energy makes use of powerful algorithms developed by the DOE at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  The algorithms enable statistical and actuarial analysis of energy savings performance of buildings, providing users with the ability to quickly search for results meaningful to their own business.

This has led to opportunities for various stakeholders within the industry.  "The Kiewit Building Group has a unique ability to deliver a full range of commissioning, LEED Consulting, energy audits, retrofits, and facility services as a Fortune 500 General Contractor," stated Shervin Ansari, KBG Sustainability Manager. "By powering this groundbreaking DOE resource, Building Energy extends its secure access and intelligent applications so that we can use the largest energy database to help our customers evaluate their best options," said Ansari.

Cheifetz believes that that by creating the network of buildings, the entire ecosystem of building performance professionals will benefit.  "The Building Energy open ecosystem catalyzes the movement to better buildings by connecting big data, innovative organizations and brilliant people with breakthrough apps," Cheifetz added.

The power of the network created by Building Energy is a vision shared by other Building Energy customers and partners.  "I am looking forward to convening a group of my retail sector peers in Building Energy to use the full range of its apps so that we may learn from each other's data in a protected setting," said Gary Levitan, Manager, Energy, Utilities, and Profit Improvement, Saks Fifth Ave. Inc. "The DOE adds a dimension of data so that we will be able to quickly and easily compare building performance across our own portfolios and the DOE portfolio to identify optimal measures for energy savings and GHG reduction," Levitan added.
