OmniVision Launches Cost-Effective, High-Performance HD LCOS Solution for Pico Projection Systems

OVP7200 AND OVP921 ENABLE COMPACT DESIGN FOR NATIVE 720P HD VIDEO DISPLAYS IN MOBILE AND AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced a new complete liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) chipset solution for low-cost, low-power and high-definition (HD) pico projection systems. The single-chip LCOS panel OVP7200 displays native 720p HD video, while its companion chip, the OVP921, provides advanced image processing and a host of other features that simplify system design, save space and reduce power consumption. The combination of these features makes the OVP7200 and OVP921 chipset a highly attractive solution for next-generation projection systems in automotive and mobile applications.

"With demand increasing for pico projection systems in mobile devices and head-up displays for automotive applications, we believe that we're entering an exciting era with growing market potential," said Raymond Sun, senior manager, LCOS business at OmniVision. "The new OVP7200 and OVP921 chipset provides our customers with an easy-to-integrate, complete display system solution, enabling faster time-to-market."

The OVP7200 is a single panel, color field sequential LCOS device that has a native resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, with a diagonal measurement of 0.37-inch. It uses all-digital technology to drive the liquid crystal, resulting in stable, reproducible image quality. The OVP7200 panel is large enough to couple well with LED light sources, yet small enough to meet the demands of compact projection systems for mobile applications.

The OVP921 companion chip provides enhanced system performance without the need for external memory or image processor. It has built-in keystone correction, frame rate conversion, video input scaling, interface to LED controller and an embedded microcontroller. The OVP921 can accept video data from three different signal inputs: 24-bit RGB, MIPI or USB.

The OVP7200 and OVP921 are currently sampling, with volume production expected to begin in the second quarter of 2013.
