Bronx Park Becomes 24th NYC Park Location with Free AT&T Wi-Fi

NEW YORK, Aug. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T officials today launched free AT&T Wi-Fi service at Hunts Point Riverside Park with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the New York City Parks Department. Hunts Point Riverside Park is the third Bronx park to receive the service through the "Wi-Fi in the Parks" initiative; a collaboration between AT&T and the Bloomberg Administration to provide free Wi-Fi at 26 parks locations across the five boroughs. In addition to Wi-Fi, AT&T has made major investments in the Bronx wireless network over the past year, including the addition of LTE service and 239 network upgrades.

"AT&T is committed to providing Bronx residents and all New Yorkers creative ways to stay connected whether they're at home, at work or in Hunts Point Riverside Park," said Marissa Shorenstein, President, AT&T New York. "Through our continued efforts with the Wi-Fi in the Parks Initiative and our ongoing improvements to the network, Bronx residents now have even more ways to stay in touch with friends, families and co-workers."

"I am excited about the continued growth of the 'Wi-Fi in the Parks' initiative in the Bronx, and I welcome the expansion of this program to Hunts Point Riverside Park," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. "I want to thank AT&T for its continued commitment to the Bronx and for improving the experience of our park visitors, who for the past year have been taking advantage of free Wi-Fi service at Devoe Park and Joyce Kilmer Park, and will now continue to enjoy the advantages of staying connected at another park in our borough."

"The launch of free Wi-Fi at Hunts Point Riverside Park gives Bronx residents another opportunity to take advantage of the borough's beautiful parks," said Bob Garafola, Deputy Commissioner, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. "We're thrilled to work with AT&T to continue to connect New Yorkers in parks across all five boroughs."

"I commend AT&T, the NYC Parks Department and the Bronx Borough President for working so diligently to improve access to not only beautiful, safe and enjoyable parks, but also for ensuring that like other communities, our residents can enjoy internet access through free Wi-Fi service while at Riverside Park," said Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo. "It is imperative that we continue to enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors, and this initiative is a great step in that direction, facilitating web searches, online reading or allowing local schools to host outdoor classes, and much more."

"I am proud to join the Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr., and AT&T to celebrate the continued growth of 'Wi-Fi in the Parks' in the Bronx," said Sen. Gustavo Rivera. "Having access to wireless Internet is an important tool for Bronxites and has already enhanced the quality of life of my constituents, while also providing new activities and uses for city parks."

In addition to launching LTE service in the Bronx, AT&T has made significant network upgrades in the borough, including a new cell site, two broadband speed upgrades, 124 capacity upgrades and 112 network connection upgrades.
