UrbanCode Announces the Launch of Terraform(TM)

CLEVELAND, July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- UrbanCode, the global leader in enterprise build, deploy, and release automation, today announced the launch of Terraform.  The open source software, made available under the Apache 2.0 license, satisfies the need for one-click provisioning of environments for IT teams everywhere.

Terraform was created in response to increasing demand for the rapid creation of virtual environments. Traditionally, manually provisioning a virtual environment could take anywhere from days to several weeks, depending on the size and complexity. This has quickly become an insupportable process given the accelerated demands of businesses for faster releases.

Terraform lets teams slash environment provisioning times from weeks to minutes by automating these time-consuming operations. The process is simple and repeatable: define your virtual machines, startup scripting, and networking rules in an XML template, and then you can spin up as many test environments as you need - one at a time, or in parallel. Terraform currently works on top of Amazon EC2 and VMWare vSphere, with integrations for additional providers planned for future releases.

"We recognized many of our customers asking about automated environment provisioning, and saw an opportunity to address a glaring need," said Maciej Zawadzki, UrbanCode CEO. "Our software offerings focused on automating other aspects of the application deliver pipeline - build, deploy, and release - so creating Terraform was a logical next step for us.  We were able to leverage our existing expertise to deliver open source, ePaaS software in a space that was sorely underserved."

Terraform exposes provisioning of an environment as a self-service. By reducing the time needed to provision environments, teams are now able to test scenarios faster; saving money by detecting issues sooner, and delivering more often. Terraform also lets users track changes easier, and promote topology changes just like code changes.

"One of the great things about Terraform is how it plays into Continuous Delivery," said Eric Minick, Lead Consultant.  "Build was the first bottleneck. Then, it was deployment. Now, teams are running out of environments to test, and that's where Terraform comes into play. It provisions all the pieces that an app needs to deploy."

Terraform features:

    --  Open source, free software
--  Works on top of Amazon EC2 and VMWare vSphere, with additional providers
        on the way
--  Configuration Management via integrations with Puppet and Chef
--  Virtual environment provisioning with the push of a button
