Updated Ricoh remote forensic collection tool addresses costly challenge of 'full-disk encryption'

Remlox 4.1 enables remote live forensic imaging of hard disks that employ increasingly sophisticated protection

WEST CALDWELL, N.J., June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced that HSSK Forensics, Inc., a Ricoh company, has released a new version of its Remlox(TM), its forensically sound remote data collection tool.

Remlox 4.1 enables any litigation team to take advantage of forensically sound, cost-effective remote live data acquisition, even in the face of increasingly sophisticated encryption technology.

Precise and validated acquisition of data is a key step in forensic analysis and eDiscovery, which is the process of collecting, culling, processing and reviewing electronically stored information (ESI) subject to discovery.

Remlox 4.1, available today, addresses the growing challenge of more technically sophisticated "full-disk encryption," a technology increasingly present on enterprise PCs and laptops that until now has complicated remote data collection. Full-disk encryption has often forced companies to pay for costly expert forensic teams to travel to client sites to collect data in an unencrypted state for further downstream processing. In some cases, the advanced full-drive encryption tools have also compelled clients to share ultra-sensitive encryption keys.

Remlox 4.1 solves these problems as the first and only fully customizable remote data collection tool that supports the acquisition of a full forensic image of a PC or laptop hard drive, even in the presence of advanced full-disk encryption. Clients can continue to reap all the benefits of remote live imaging - efficiency, convenience and cost control - under conditions that would foil most other tools.

The pivotal difference in Remlox 4.1 is that it has the option to acquire hard-disk data at the volume as well as the physical level. The forensically acquired data is protected in transit using AES 256-bit encryption, ensuring the integrity and security of the acquired data.

Remlox has delivered results for clients in 36 countries since its initial release in 2008, and HSSK Forensics has continued to innovate since its acquisition by Ricoh in January 2012. Remlox has been named in several court cases as the specified method for collecting ESI, due to its effectiveness and cost-efficiency.

How Remlox data collection works

The Remlox unit is simply couriered to a custodian, who attaches it to the target computer. The Remlox process then acquires a forensic image of the entire drive. The custodian then returns the unit to HSSK Forensics' forensics lab, along with the included chain-of-custody form, where certified professionals validate the process.

Remlox is part of Ricoh's full suite of eDiscovery services, which includes comprehensive best-in-class technologies that provide customers with customized support throughout the entire electronic discovery process, including data forensics, electronic discovery, document imaging, document coding and Web hosting.
