Nancy Duarte's "Resonate" Published as First Interactive Business Book for iPad Built Entirely in Apple's iBooks Author

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Duarte, Inc., a presentation communication agency, announces the publication of the award-winning book, Resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences, for the Apple® iPad®, making it the first business book engineered to take full advantage of the tablet's ability to support interactive applications and multimedia.

The Duarte team engineered Resonate(TM) for the iPad by integrating the book's many visual elements through video and interactive applications. They used Apple's iBooks Author, a tool to help publishers create digital books that leverage the iPad's video, sound, interactive diagrams and text functionality.

"The iPad is a major revolution in the presentation and consumption of information, so we wanted to push iBooks Author further than anyone had before in order to transform Resonate into this truly new medium," said Nancy Duarte, author of Resonate and CEO of Duarte, Inc. "The electronic edition is a self-navigating story that enables the reader to experience the content in a manner that combines the best features of cinematic storytelling, interactive exploration and traditional books."

The app enabled Duarte's designers to create and convey content not possible on the printed page. In fact, the book's original print publication contained references to online multimedia content, but since that additional content was not integrated with the book, it was a separate experience for the reader.

"Even though Duarte originally packaged Resonate for print, this book was waiting for the interactive opportunity made available in iBooks Author," said Ms. Duarte. "The iPad technology allows us to produce the book in the visual, cinematic manner I originally envisioned."

For example, among the key concepts in Resonate is the "sparkline," a representation of the dramatic shape of any persuasive presentation. While this is explained in the print version of Resonate, in the new iPad publication the sparklines come to life through the use of embedded interactive JavaScript applications. These interactive apps intertwine the data in the sparklines with audio recordings of the speeches. The book includes analysis of speeches given by President Ronald Reagan, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Steve Jobs.

Resonate was originally published in traditional printed book form in September 2010 and was lauded by businesspeople, academics and communicators. Its methodology showed how story structure - used for centuries in literature, politics and cinema - can be used to transform any presentation into an engaging journey. Resonate explains how to understand an audience, create persuasive content, elicit a groundswell response, and analyzes some of history's most effective presentations in business, politics, science and art. It spent more than 300 days on Amazon's list of 100 best-selling business books.

The popularity of iPad and other tablet devices is accelerating growth of the ebook industry. Global annual revenues from ebook sales for portable devices are projected to increase from approximately $3.2 billion in 2011 to nearly $10 billion by 2016, with about 30% of sales for tablet devices, according to estimates by Juniper Research.
