iBoss Web Filters Give Students Access to YouTube EDU Videos, Offering Parents and Teachers Peace of Mind by Restricting Content

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- While Internet filtering is designed to shield students from inappropriate material online, it also can prohibit them from accessing the vast resources available on the web. One relatively new resource is YouTube EDU, a dedicated channel designed to give schools customized access to educational videos.

Currently, many schools restrict student access to YouTube.com due to unwanted content. This, in turn, also restricts access to YouTube EDU. With the new iBoss Enterprise Web Filter firmware, schools can simply paste their unique YouTube EDU ID and open a direct path to the YouTube EDU channel while still restricting general student access to YouTube.

iBoss (http://www.iboss.com) is an expert in the field of Internet filtering. The company provides gateway security for large organizations across the globe.

The YouTube for Education integration with the iBoss Enterprise can be group based. This allows districts to enter specific keys for different schools - such as for elementary, middle, junior high and high schools - and still provide direct integration. This option is ideal for districts or education service centers that support many different campuses under one umbrella. iBoss is the first web-filtering solution to offer group-based integration with YouTube EDU.

The Federal Communications Commission reports that 97 percent of schools across the country had Internet connectivity as of 2010, according to an Education Week article. In 2010, restrictive Internet filtering was the top student complaint about Web use in data from Speak Up research by Project Tomorrow.

Many schools are required by law to restrict student Internet access; twenty-five states have Internet filtering laws that apply to publicly funded schools or libraries. Some states even require publicly funded institutions to install filtering software on library terminals or school computers.

"The new YouTube for Education portal provides a powerful tool for teachers and students to access videos from well-known organizations such as Stanford, PBS and TED," said Peter Martini, iBoss chief operating officer. "Our engineers quickly integrated this feature to provide students seamless access to these resources without exposing them to general content on YouTube.com."
