Geek Convention Gives Locals Another Way to 'Play' in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Local game enthusiasts head into their 5th year of Neoncon, a conference built around games.

Las Vegas locals have plenty of options when it comes to playing in this city. Luckily, they have one more. Built around community and board games, Neoncon is a four day conference taking place Nov. 3-6 that lets attendees engage in long game-playing sessions, some as long at 5 hours.

Events feature an open and organized play track that may include: tabletop and live action role-playing games, miniatures, collectible card games, family card and board games.

The convention has expanded to include additional events that attract and foster budding writers, game designers and artists.

The conference is open to the public and tickets are at a discounted $50.00 for all 4 days.

"We want to celebrate what most people consider 'geeky.' Neoncon is a place to get away from real life and engage in fantasy. It's a place to let your imagination run wild and be surrounded by others who want to take a break from the 9-5 and just play," states Doug Daulton who is the founder of Neoncon and organizer of the event.

The exhibit hall is open and free to the public. The real fun happens inside the game rooms. Led by moderators, even newcomers can jump in and be coached on how to play. For those more experienced players there are prizes and opportunities to win a spot to play these games around the country in tournaments.

The Tropicana is host to the event this year and locals are encouraged to make a "staycation" from the event. "After you spend all night playing in a game, you'll want to head up to your room to crash before you wake up and do it again," states Todd R. Levy, a novice to the event.

Neoncon is family friendly with games open to kids as young as 8. Games include some popular titles with large followings such as Settlers of Catan, Pathfinder and Dungeon & Dragons. And, new games will be open for play including those published by a local company 42 Games.

Volunteers are also welcome and have the benefit of working and playing throughout the conference in shifts.  Tickets can be purchased through the website at neoncon.com. Follow neoncon at Facebook.com/neoncon and Twitter @neoncon.
