Charter Prepares for World IPv6 Day
New Internet Protocol Will Enable Continued Innovation
ST. LOUIS, May 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) is preparing for participation in World IPv6 Day on June 8, 2011, enabling IP version 6 access and transit services to select users throughout Charter's service areas. IPv6 will enable billions more devices to connect to the Internet as the number of IP version 4 network addresses are rapidly dwindling.
World IPv6 Day is a global "test flight" of IPv6, the next-generation Internet Protocol designed to support continuing growth of the Internet and enable improved innovation of IP-based services. Sponsored by the Internet Society (ISOC), Charter and other major service providers, content providers and web sites are joining forces to enable IPv6 Internet connection technology for 24 hours. The goal is both to raise awareness of this major step in the evolution of the Internet, and to gather data on IPv6 readiness. Activity throughout this test day will in no way affect routine Internet use, and Internet users do not need to take any action at this time. Charter will provide more information on IPv6 deployment as we approach full deployment in 2012.

Internet Protocol, or IP, is the "language" spoken across the Internet and across almost all private data networks. The version of IP currently in use (IPv4) is nearly 40 years old, and was not built to sustain the plethora of new network devices and systems, from laptops, tablets, and smartphones to servers in corporate data centers. IP version 6, or IPv6, opens up a vast capacity to support new network devices and services for the foreseeable future, and eliminates the technological tricks that have been used for more than a decade to shore up IPv4. The results of IPv6 adoption will be a more unified means of networking and accelerated innovation of network services.

If users do detect issues with their IPv6 readiness, the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) publishes troubleshooting information on its website: http://www.getipv6.info/index.php/Customer_problems_that_could_occur. In particular, users are advised to visit their manufacturer's website to upgrade their operating systems, web browsers, and home routers to the latest software versions.
