Full Story:

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced a new solution available for the Google Search Appliance (GSA) that improves time-to-information with on-the-fly indexing for content stored on EMC VNX storage systems. As customers continue to create massive amounts of content--it becomes critical that they are able to find it. The new solution--a connector within the EMC VNX unified storage system--enables the most current Intranet search results across these systems. Together, the two market leaders in information infrastructure and search are enabling employees to be more productive by ensuring the most up-to-date search results across EMC VNX storage systems.

The GSA is the fastest, easiest and most logical next step in an IT infrastructure to ensure users get to their information faster and increase employee productivity. With the new connector, customers can now achieve blazing fast and accurate VNX unified storage search results leveraging the GSA and EMC VNX unified storage, providing enterprises with:

--  Dynamic, relevant and more up-to-date search results in EMC VNX unified
        storage environments.
--  Faster indexing of targeted or specific content in VNX unified storage
        environments--in minutes.
--  More granular searching of information--for example at the departmental
or author level with support for GSA dynamic navigation.
--  Advanced enterprise search features through the GSA including user added
results, people search and Cloud Connect.

Every time an employee searches for content stored on VNX storage systems--such as documents, spreadsheets, multi-media, and .pdf files, the GSA references its index to provide the search results. Leveraging the new connector, the VNX unified storage system will automatically publish a notification to the GSA to update the index when files change. The GSA then indexes the updated content and makes the search results readily available to users.

New integration between the GSA and EMC VNX unified storage automates event notifications anytime files change on VNX storage to the GSA, providing customers with:

--  Assurance that any file changes to VNX unified storage
content--including edits, creating copies or deleting files--will prompt
the VNX storage system to send notifications to the GSA.
--  Simple event filtering from the EMC VNX storage system targeting
information that is indexed and made searchable.
--  Ensures search results are readily available to users.

Industry Analyst Quote

"Companies are packrats--they hang onto a lot of data, in every nook and cranny of an IT infrastructure. If they can't find that information, it becomes less valuable to them and their employees and customers. The integration between VNX unified storage and Google Search Appliance is about driving employee productivity. Together, Google and EMC are empowering employees with information. Faster access to information equals faster time to value creation. This is a powerful combination for any organization," said Benjamin S. Woo, Program Vice President, Worldwide Storage Systems Research at IDC.

Google Executive Quote

"Our goal is to make searching for information inside of a business as easy, fast and relevant as it is to search on Google.com," said Matt Eichner, General Manager, Global Enterprise Search at Google. "We were impressed with EMC's unique implementation of our onboard connector technology for the GSA. Leveraging EMC VNX to flag the GSA for content changes on VNX storage systems is exactly the type of innovation we encourage of all of our enterprise search partners. We look forward to this blossoming relationship with EMC."

EMC Executive Quote

"VNX has transformed how customers think about midrange storage--and Google single-handedly transformed how people and enterprises search and find information," said Eric Herzog, Vice President Product Marketing and Management, Unified Storage Division. "With its unique architecture, the EMC VNX enables customers to do far more--with far less. Whether tiering cold data off-premise to a cloud, automatically provisioning data in minutes, or in this case enabling faster indexing for the most up-to-date Intranet search results--EMC VNX is the most simple, powerful and efficient unified storage system on the market today."
