LG Cinema 3D Technology Faces Off at NCAA® 2011 Men's Final Four®

HOUSTON, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Next-generation 3D TV technology is a slam-dunk, according to LG Electronics USA, which hosted a side-by-side comparison of competing 3D TV technologies in Houston during the NCAA® 2011 Men's Final Four®.

LG Electronics USA, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, offered ticket holders the opportunity to experience LG Cinema 3D at the NCAA "Tip-off Tailgate presented by Infiniti®" event outside Reliant Stadium.  Rivalling the excitement of a buzzer-beating three-pointer, fans were invited to participate in the ultimate game-off, where they tested their own basketball skills and compared LG Cinema 3D to conventional 3D.

Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA, said, "LG Cinema 3D TV delivers exactly what fans are looking for - an easy, affordable way to watch 3D sporting events in beautiful high def with friends and family from virtually anywhere in their living room."

Seeing is Believing

Final Four attendees compared the difference between LG's Cinema 3D technology and conventional 3D in a unique Championship Game created specifically for the festivities in Houston. Fans watched LG's Cinema 3D technology and then viewed conventional 3D with its active glasses.  Each person then chose which they preferred by shooting a basketball into the corresponding basket. Participants also had a chance to win their very own LG Cinema 3D HDTV.

LG Cinema recreates the 3D movie theater viewing experience with lightweight, comfortable and reasonably priced eyewear, and delivers crisp bright images and a wide viewing angle. In an LG consumer perception study, participants preferred LG Cinema 3D 3 to 1 versus LG's 2010 active 3D technology.

Better 3D TV Experience

LG Cinema 3D uses a similar 3D technology as employed in movie theaters. Because the glasses do not need to sync with an emitter, viewers can watch from nearly any angle in the room. The reasonable cost of the glasses also makes it easier to buy as many pairs as needed to host family and friends for a 3D sports night.

At the heart of LG Cinema 3D is Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) display technology, pioneered by LG Electronics' joint venture LG Display. FPR technology optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eye, recombining them through the glasses to create 3D images with reduced cross-talk. LG's 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the screen, creates brighter 3D images for a superior 3D viewing experience by helping to counteract dimness that can occur with 3D content.

The NCAA Tip-off Tailgate, attended by tens of thousands of college basketball and 3D TV fans, was open to game-ticket holders only.
