Verizon Powers Immersive Video for SUNY Oswego

Deploys Cisco TelePresence as Part of University's IP Transformation

OSWEGO, N.Y., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Students and faculty at the State University of New York at Oswego will be able to interact with experts across the world without ever having to leave campus - thanks to an immersive video solution provided by Verizon.

As part of a three-year, $3.5 million initiative intended to transform the campus infrastructure by using Internet Protocol technologies, Verizon is working to bring the benefits of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) to the college, including deploying Cisco TelePresence technology on the main campus in Oswego and at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse.  Immersive video goes far beyond traditional video conferencing by replicating face-to-face interaction so realistically that it feels as though everyone is in the same room, even though they may be hundreds or thousands of miles apart.

"A major benefit of the new system is its ability to deliver new academic offerings via high-quality video, while allowing us to tie into other telepresence locations across the country - or around the globe -- providing access to outside experts and opening the college up to numerous distance learning opportunities," said Joe Moreau, SUNY Oswego's chief technology officer.  "At the same time, using video will support the college's sustainability efforts by helping to reduce travel between campuses and the carbon emissions associated with it. The opportunities are tremendous."

SUNY Oswego, with 8,300 students and 1,195 full-time faculty and staff, stretches for almost 700 acres and includes 58 buildings along Lake Ontario. Oswego is one of 13 university colleges in the 64-campus SUNY system, offering more than 110 majors ranging from accounting to zoology as well as cooperative and graduate programs.

In addition to telepresence, the new IP-based communications platform will enable Voice Over IP (VoIP) and video, as well as advanced call center operations for better customer service.
