Design-a-Hole Contest Offers Players Golden Tee Golf Immortality
ARLINGTON HTS., Ill., March 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --Lots of kids want to become video game designers when they grow up. And apparently, many still want to after they grow up. Just ask Jim Zielinski, co-creator of Golden Tee Golf.
Zielinski gets paid to dream up the beguiling fairways and greens that have kept Golden Tee Golf an earnings powerhouse since 1989. Since joining Incredible Technologies, maker of Golden Tee, he's designed more than 100 virtual golf courses. That's nearly 2,000 unique holes.
For many, it's the ultimate dream job. Luckily, Zielinski is not above sharing it. Hence, Golden Tee's fourth annual Design-a-Hole contest. "Players have been sending us design ideas for years," Zielinski says. "So three years ago, we decided to give them a chance to show us their stuff."
Contest entries come in all formats, ranging from scrawls on bar napkins and simple crayon sketches to architectural blueprints, CAD designs and YouTube videos. One contestant created a painstakingly elaborate clay diorama; another submitted a "ransom note" pasted together from newspaper cutouts.
Last year Zielinski reviewed nearly 100 different designs. IT expects more than double that amount this year.
So, what makes for a winning design?
According to Zielinski, "I like holes that make players think and make choices. I want them to offer a risk/reward variance. It's got to be challenging, but feasible. And, of course, fun."
Once the Design-a-Hole winner is crowned, Zielinski will incorporate the design into one of Golden Tee's 2012 courses. But, the big incentive to enter the contest - besides Golden Tee immortality - is the opportunity for the winner to host the 2012 Golden Tee World Premiere in his hometown bar. The event is anticipated by fans far and wide and takes on the aura of a Hollywood movie premiere. The contest closes on April 15th and the winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
